Help and Troubleshooting
These topics cover where to get help and how to fix common problems: contacting support, the in-app tutorials and guided tour, app updates, rebuilding the search index, checking a brain for errors, and recovering after a crash.
- Getting Help and Support — Where to get help with TheBrain — the Help menu, TheBrain Help on the web, Send Feedback, About TheBrain for the version you are running and its release notes, how to send your log file to support, and the support address, support@thebrain.com.
- Tutorials — The Tutorials panel lists TheBrain's two tutorials, the Getting Started walkthrough and the Quick Thoughts Tour, and tracks your progress; phones and tablets get the Quick Thoughts Tour only.
- Onboarding Walkthrough — The Getting Started walkthrough is an interactive guided tour that introduces TheBrain's basics; it does not start by itself, you start it with the Get Started button on an empty brains list or from the Help menu.
- App Updates — Update the desktop app to the latest version — check for updates, download and install a new version, pick an update channel, and choose whether to check on startup; About TheBrain shows the version you are running.
- Rebuilding the Search Index — When search can't find a thought, note, or attachment that you know exists, or reports and the to-do list look incomplete, rebuild the brain's search index.
- Data Integrity Scan — Check a brain for errors and repair it — the scan finds attachments whose files are missing, bad names, broken links, and similar data problems, fixes most of them on its own, and lists the few that need your decision — on the desktop and mobile apps.
- Crash Recovery — When TheBrain has crashed or been forced to quit, the installed app reopens where you were the next time it starts, without asking — the brain tabs you had open (desktop) or your last view (mobile); the Improper Shutdown Detected prompt appears only after TheBrain has failed right after starting several times in a row.
- Note Recovery Files — On mobile, if recovered note files exist after a note could not be saved, you can send them to TheBrain support (or share them) or clear them from the Support group of the settings menu.
