- Ahead of COP30 — the United Nations climate summit which began November 6 in Brazil — Bill Gates released a memo targeted at the international climate community which argued that “although climate change will have serious consequences—particularly for people in the poorest countries—it will not lead to humanity’s demise” and called for a “strategic pivot” on climate change to prioritize “human welfare.”
Bill Weir, CNN’s chief climate correspondent, correctly predicted how right-wing media would respond: “This will be used by detractors and denialists to say that the story is shifting.”
On *CNN News Central’*s day one coverage of COP30, Erica Hill laid out some of the impact of Gates’ memo at a time when the United States is already turning its back on the “world’s largest climate summit”:
- > President Trump, of course, has called climate change a, quote, con job. That's despite the overwhelming evidence of its reality and the very real threat it poses. President Trump seemed to get an assist recently from Bill Gates, who argued that resources actually should be shifted away from the battle against climate change. It's a move that experts have said is just flat out wrong.
- In fact, in response to Gates' memo, Trump posted on Truth Social that “I (WE!) just won the War on the Climate Change Hoax” because Bill Gates had “finally admitted that he was completely WRONG on the issue.” Gates said that Trump and other right-wing media reactions that echo his remarks are a “gigantic misreading of the memo,” while he has also pushed back at “climate scientists who said he was setting up a false dichotomy pitting climate efforts against foreign aid.”
- ## Right-wing media celebrate Bill Gates’ shift on climate, misrepresent his memo to downplay the climate crisis
- The Associated Press reported that Bill Gates remarked: “If you think climate is not important, you won't agree with the memo. If you think climate is the only cause and apocalyptic, you won't agree with the memo.”
But there it seems Gates was wrong. Right-wing media figures, who regularly downplay the climate crisis are likely among those who “think climate is not important,” and they are not disagreeing with the memo. They have celebrated it and used it to further downplay the climate crisis, attack climate science as “fraudulent,” and advance right-wing narratives and misinformation related to global warming, including denying sea level rise, suggesting that current climate change is unremarkable because the climate has been changing for billions of years, and pushing the “global cooling” myth.
- The New York Post editorial board concluded, “If Gates wants any credit for belatedly seeing the light, he needs to put maximum effort into getting the left’s climate warriors to wake up, too.” NY Post, [10/28/25]
- Former Fox News host John Stossel used Bill Gates’ memo to push his climate change denial content on social media, writing, “Welcome to the club, Bill. Here 3 climate scientists debunk several of the doomsday myths.”Stossel shared one of his videos featuring three climate skeptics, Willie Soon, David Legates, and Patrick Michaels, from an event at The Heartland Institute, a conservative think tank that has received funding from fossil fuel interests. - Hannity.com: “CLIMATE KOOK FLIPS! Bill Gates Suggests Rethinking Climate Change 'Doomsday Outlook'”Hannity.com, [10/28/25]
- Fox host Jimmy Failla claimed that Gates’ memo proves climate change is a “grift” and pushed the misleading narrative that the climate is always changing. Failla continued:“What an about face. And it really gives up the whole entire grift we always knew it was. It drives me crazy because, you know this, the movement has not only changed again but changed in name three times before we got here. We were going to freeze to death in the ‘70s. Can you give me some money? We were going to melt in the ‘80s. Can you give me a few bucks? Then they were like, we're not freezing or melting, but the weather changes every day. How about a couple of bucks.” Fox News, *Fox & Friends*, [10/29/25; climatefactcheck.org,
- Glenn Beck, founder of TheBlaze, wrote on his website that Gates did a “strategic pivot” because “the ruling class” finds AI “more useful than fear of the weather.”“Climate alarmism gave elites a pretext to centralize power over energy. Artificial intelligence gives them a mechanism to centralize power over people,” he later wrote. [Glennbeck.com,
- In an interview with Newsmax’s Rob Schmitt, conspiracy theorist and U.S. Agency for Global Media senior adviser Kari Lake said, “When we get documents declassified on the climate hoax, he’s probably trying to get ahead of what happens then.”Newsmax, *Rob Schmitt Tonight,* [10/29/25; Media Matters, 12/12/24]
- OnAmerica’s Newsroom, co-host Bill Hemmer used the memo to falsely claim that “rising sea levels just ain’t happening.” “He says it will not lead to the humanities demise. … Maybe an asteroid will, but the rising sea levels just ain’t happening as Al Gore warned us back in 2005.” The World Economic Forum has said that “rising sea levels caused by climate change are impacting 1 billion people worldwide,” while “2024 saw an unexpectedly fast rising of sea levels, which are already unprecedented.” Fox News, *America’s Newsroom*, [10/29/25; World Economic Forum, 3/25/25]
- OnOutnumbered, Fox News contributor Kaylee McGhee White said “climate change doomerism” was a ploy to “drive young adults … to leftist activism.” “This is the least surprising development ever. I think that the climate change doomerism, it was always a ploy, the real purpose of which was to drive young adults my age into leftist activism, that is all it was a vehicle for. And you know, what’s frustrating about this is Bill Gates is suddenly switching his position, but there is no new science behind." Fox News, *Outnumbered*, [10/29/25]
- Fox’s Will Cain hosted Alex Epstein, author of the petroleum-promoting bookFossil Future, and suggested that fossil fuel advocacy is the “potential explanations for the change of heart of Bill Gates.” He claimed, “It is really most of the thoughtful scientists and thinkers through the last several hundred years who have understood the power of fossil fuels and economic growth in helping the vast majority of people across the world. Maybe that finally broke through to Bill Gates. Maybe just seeing the writing on the wall in modern America and under President Donald Trump.” Fox News, *The Will Cain Show*, [10/29/25; Media Matters, 11/4/25]
- OnThe Five, Greg Gutfeld claimed that “people were told to stop having kids” and that Gates' shift is akin to admitting the “climate models … are fraudulent.”Gutfeld said, “It was a lie that impacted the mental health of generations and the physical health of a civilization. People were told to stop having kids. If you had kids you were hurting the planet. But it is hopeful that Gates and others are ceding to reality. We saw it happen already. Nobody is talking about data anymore because the data, the climate models, they are finally admitting are fraudulent, they were retrofitted so that they matched the results they were getting, and now that is out in the open.” Fox News, *The Five*, [10/29/25]
- Fox host Joey Jones claimed that Gates’ memo meant that Trump “won the climate change war.”“I think Trump has won another war. He won the climate change war now. Americans are coming around. You want to talk about petroleum products, think about how much oil is used to make all of those syringes for all of those vaccines during Covid. I mean just the impact and imprint of petroleum on our lives is endless,” Jones claimed. Fox News, *The Five*, [10/29/25]
- Contributor Katie Pavlich told Fox Business’Kudlowthat she wants “reparations for damage this guy [Bill Gates] did on the climate change front.”She claimed, “There were years of groups that were funded by Bill Gates, foreigners doing fact checks on conservative web sites like TownHall, demonetizing us for talking about climate change and that it’s not going to destroy humanity and in fact a lot of the science has been bought and paid for and has been debunked on this issue. I would get laughed at when I would point out I am from Arizona, and you can find sea shells, fossils at the top of the Grand Canyon because yes, climate change has been happening for billions of years.” Fox Business, *Kudlow*, [10/29/25]
- Frequent Fox guest and climate denier Marc Morano on Fox Business’The Evening Editsuggested that Bill Gates “knew” all along that climate change was nonsense.“Bill Gates knew in the year 2000 that the climate agenda was complete bleep. He knew in 2010 it was nonsense, he knew in 2020 it was nonsense, but only in 2025 is he willing to tell the truth. And the reason is he needs connections. He needs energy.” [Fox Business, The Evening Edit,
10/30/25; Washington Post, 9/16/16; Media Matters, 12/17/12; 5/22/19]
Newsmax host Rob Finnerty falsely claimed that Gates is “saying that it’s [climate change] not real.Finnerty said, “Now think about what Democrats have done to all of us in reaction to the climate hysteria created by people like Bill Gates over the last five decades: wind farms, electric cars, carbon footprint, bike lanes, electric buses, eating less meat, renewable energy. We could go on all night and all of it was total garbage. … Bill Gates, who's been right there with always-wrong Al Gore warning us of impending doom for years now, saying that it's not real.” Newsmax, *Finnerty*, [10/31/25]
Right-wing streamer Zack Hoyt, known online as Asmongold, told his audience that Bill Gates no longer believes in climate change and quotes Trump’s Truth Social Post.“You know who else doesn't believe in climate change recently? Bill Gates. Bill Gates has dramatically changed his position on climate change, acknowledging for the first time that there is no doomsday risk for, of global warming. … We just won the war on the climate change hoax. Bill Gates has finally admitted that he was completely wrong on the issue.” [YouTube, AsmongoldTV,
- Fox & Friends Weekendguest and Republican strategist Mehek Cooke claimed Gates shifted on climate change because he realized “we're not going to pay for this green climate change hoax.” She said, “We're not all going to die at the end of the day. So farmers can increase their herd share, I can eat more meat. I mean, all the things that Bill Gates said to the American people, he realized he was losing because we're not going to pay for this green climate change hoax. I also think he's listening to President Trump. It's about innovation and not more regulation.” Fox News, *Fox & Friends Weekend*, [11/2/25]
- Power The Future Founder and frequent right-wing media guest Daniel Turner wrote that Bill Gates’ “climate crusade was always a grift.” Twitter/X, [11/3/25; Media Matters, 5/8/24;
- ## Climate scientists push back on Gates pitting poverty reduction against efforts to reduce carbon emissions
- During a segment on CNN News Central, Bill Weir highlighted concerns from “the chorus of top climate scientists who spent the week trying to debunk the billionaire's confusing new message that rich cities will be immune from the worst effects and that technology can save us.”
Additionally, The Guardian pointed out that a number of climate scientists have criticized Gates for using “‘straw man’ arguments about the threat to humanity and ‘false dichotomies’ between spending on climate or aid for the poor.”
- In comments to NBC, Jeffrey Sachs, who leads Columbia University’s Center for Sustainable Development, “called the memo ‘pointless, vague, unhelpful and confusing,'" adding that there’s “no reason to pit poverty reduction versus climate transformation.’" NBC, [10/28/25]
- Climate scientist Michael Mann has been outspoken about Gates’ memo, pointing out that it coincided with the landfall of the climate-driven Hurricane Melissa and that it was defended by former Fox News star Megyn Kelly. Mann also wrote a rebuttal of the memo in Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, making the point that “Gates’ latest missive … plays like a game of climate change-diminishing bingo, drawing upon nearly every one of the tropes embraced by professional climate disinformers.” Twitter/X, [10/28/25, 10/29/25; The Bulletin, 10/31/25; The New York Times, 11/6/25]
- Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at the University of California Los Angeles, said of the memo: “Despite agreeing with some points therein, I still think its framing is fundamentally flawed and thus also its key conclusions.” Twitter/X, [11/3/25]
- Climate scientist Zeke Hausfather wrote: “There are a lot of things I agree with in Bill Gates’ new memo on climate change. … But in other areas I feel that it needlessly sets up a conflict between laudable goals.” Hausfather said that “we can both mitigate emissions and alleviate poverty, disease, and hunger. While there are some tradeoffs it is more a question of policy priority than a zero sum game. Similarly, I feel that Gates is a bit too cavalier in his treatment of climate risk.” The Climate Brink, [11/5/25]
- Katherine Hayhoe, chief scientist at the Nature Conservancy, also criticized Gates’ memo. She said, “‘I have not seen a single scientific paper that ever posited that the human race would become extinct … it’s a straw man, the way he’s proposing it.” The Guardian, [11/6/25]

right-wing media are attacking a series of new regulations the EPA issued in an effort to cut planet-warming carbon emissions and other types of toxic pollution from coal plants and some natural gas plants.
In response to the new rules, which the agency issued on April 25, right-wing media have misleadingly argued that one key action — forcing coal plants and new natural gas plants to cut carbon pollution by 90% in the next eight years — would inevitably cause blackouts and steep energy price increases, fueled by growing demand.
They also insist that the move is unconstitutional, pointing to the 2022 West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency Supreme Court decision, even though the regulations were designed with the decision in mind.
- ## The EPA issued a new rule that it says would prevent over 1,000 deaths by 2035 by requiring coal plants and new natural gas plants to drastically cut carbon emissions using nascent technology or shut down
- Coal plants that intend to remain active after 2039, and new base-load natural gas plants that are expected to run continuously, are required to cut their carbon emissions by 90% by 2032.This target is based on the capabilities of carbon capture and storage (CCS), a method of removing carbon dioxide from point sources of pollution, like power plants, and storing it underground. While some polluting industries are utilizing CCS, the technology is nascent and expensive. Coal plants that want to operate past 2039 will likely have to adopt this technology or retire. Natural Resources Defense Council, [4/25/24,11/23; EIA, accessed 5/3/24; The New York Times, 3/19/23]
- The EPA says the new rule would have massive public health and environmental benefits. According to the EPA, “co-benefits including approximately 1,200 avoided premature deaths; 870 avoided hospital and emergency room visits; 1,900 avoided cases of asthma onset; 360,000 avoided cases of asthma symptoms.” The EPA also estimates the rule change would reduce carbon emissions by 1.38 billion tons. EPA.gov, accessed [4/29/24]
- ## Right-wing media and other figures claim that cutting carbon pollution from coal plants, or potentially phasing them out, would make energy more expensive and potentially cause blackouts because of a predicted surge in energy demand
- The Wall Street Journal editorial board wrote that the new rule will “raise electricity prices” and might force Americans to ration energy. The editorial incorrectly claims that the rule will ban new natural gas plants and that it will “have no effect on global temperatures.” “But,” the article continues, “it will raise electricity prices no matter what EPA says. Electric rates are already soaring amid the government force-fed green transition, especially in states like California, New York and New Jersey that have done the most to punish fossil fuels.” It concluded that a second term for Biden could mean that Americans would “face energy rationing.” The Wall Street Journal, [4/26/24]
- On One America News, climate denier Alex Newman told host Alison Steinberg that the new rule is designed to “dismantle the U.S. economy.” When asked about the new rule, Newman said, “Under their plan, energy prices will skyrocket. What they're doing here, Alison, is actually very strategic. It has nothing to do with the climate. Forget the climate change; it’s a total hoax. What they're doing here is they're trying to dismantle the U.S. economy.” Later in the segment, Newman also said, “The Republican states are going to have to stand up and say you have no authority to declare a climate emergency. You're not shutting down anything in our state. If you send anybody into our state to shut down a power plant, to shut down an export of anything you're going to be arrested and you're gonna be prosecuted.” One America News, *In Focus*, [4/28/24]
- On Fox Business, host Jackie DeAngelis said, “This green push is going to create a situation where all our prices go up” when there is more demand for electrification and other technology. “The electricity and the energy that we need for the green cars and to power all these other green initiatives, even whether it’s in the crypto space or whether it’s other things that we are doing in the chip space in AI, this all comes from fossil fuels,” she said. “Windmills cannot give you the energy that you need to power these industries yet, so ultimately the consumer is going to suffer, businesses are going to suffer. I don't really see how this works.” Fox Business, *The Big Money Show*, [4/25/24]
- In an interview with Rich Nolan, CEO of the National Mining Association, Fox Business host Larry Kudlow falsely claimed the new rules mean there will be “no new natural gas plants” and that “there isn't going to be any electricity to power any economic growth in this country.”Nolan told Kudlow that the Biden administration had “dealt a massive blow to affordable, reliable American-mined energy in this country.” Fox Business, *Kudlow*, [4/25/24]
- Newsmax host Rob Schmitt said, “If they implement this, get ready for blackout nation.” In an interview with National Rural Electric Cooperative Association CEO Jim Matheson, Schmitt said, “There won't be nearly enough windmills to run this country, especially with all these new electric cars they want you to drive.” Matheson said his organization thinks the regulation is “unlawful” and called it “tone deaf” to high electricity demand. Newsmax, *Rob Schmitt Tonight*, [4/25/24]
- Fox host Laura Ingraham said the regulations will “drive up our energy costs even further."She also said that “Biden’s climate fanatics” are “saboteurs of America’s economy, certainly of our energy security.” Fox News, *The Ingraham Angle*,[4/25/24]
- Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) wrote on X that the rule will “raise electricity costs and further decrease grid reliability” and urged followers to vote for Trump to “stop the EPA.”“Want a good reason to vote for Trump? The EPA. We desperately need new leadership to stop the EPA from attacking the things we need most, ie ENERGY,” Crenshaw wrote on X. “The EPA's latest move on power plants is harmful to Texans and Americans. … It’s going to raise electricity costs and further decrease grid reliability. … This is a terrible plan as energy demand continues to increase across the country. EPA’s dangerous actions put both grid reliability and electricity affordability at risk for millions of Americans.” Twitter/X, [4/25/24]
- Power the Future CEO Daniel Tuner: “Joe Biden's EPA wants to shut down every coal-fired power plant in the US.” He continued: “Here's the truth:- Coal is inexpensive, abundant, and reliable - Solar manufacturing plants run on coal - Wind manufacturing plants run on coal- EV battery factories are powered by coal Facts matter.” Twitter/X, [4/25/24]
- A Just The News headline claims that “experts say new EPA power plant rules will drive up energy costs and further destabilize U.S. grid,” but the main “expert” was from the Wyoming Mining Association. The executive director of the Wyoming Mining Association said that the rules were “ill-intentioned” and “legally questionable,” and he said they would have the effect of “further destabilizing America’s already rickety electricity grid by eliminating critical baseload power.” The article concluded that if the rule is not challenged in court, “Americans will likely be paying a lot more for energy in the coming years.” The article also quotes climate denier Steve Goreham and cites a few other sources but doesn’t quote them. Just The News, [4/25/24; Inside Climate News, 8/9/16]
- ## In reality, experts say the vast majority of renewable energy projects in the U.S. are now much cheaper than coal, which is on the way out anyway, and carbon-free energy can meet our grid’s growing demand
- In most cases, renewable energy is now cheaper than coal. A 2023 report from Energy Innovation found that 99% of “coal plants were more expensive to operate compared to the alternative of building new wind or solar” nearby. InsideClimate News,[1/30/23; Canary Media, 1/31/23]
- In the U.S., renewables have already surpassed coal in producing power, and coal plants are quickly being decommissioned anyway.According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, “in 2022, generation from renewable sources—wind, solar, hydro, biomass, and geothermal—surpassed coal-fired generation in the electric power sector for the first time.” Coal power has been on the decline for years, and coal plants are now providing only about half of the energy that they were just a decade ago. EIA, [3/27/23; InsideClimate News, 3/14/24]
- In a recent report, think tank Energy Innovation wrote that instead of just building new gas plants, “utilities and their regulators should examine a wider portfolio of solutions that are lower risk and more compatible with utility and state climate goals and customer preferences.” According to the report, new gas plants may lose their value because of the shift toward decarbonization: “New gas plants represent large investments that utilities will be locked into for decades to come. This means that as the clean electricity transition accelerates, these plants could become stranded assets, with costs ultimately falling to electricity customers.” It listed a focus on energy efficiency, growth of cost-effective renewables and storage, and investment in transmission and other types of carbon-free energy sources as potential energy solutions. Energy Innovation, [3/27/24]
- The Biden administration is taking steps to speed up federal permits to expand the electric grid more quickly. In another rule announced on April 24, the Energy Department would take charge of conducting environmental reviews of some interstate power line projects to cut permitting times, so they can build transmission lines more quickly to address expected demand. The New York Times, [4/25/24]
- Volts podcast: Instead of offering real solutions, utilities and fossil fuel allies are using the predicted surge to push for more natural gas infrastructure and oppose regulations. In a conversation about the coming electricity demand surge with the authors of Energy Innovation’s recent report, podcast host David Roberts pointed out that “utilities should have been preparing already and it's a little rich now that they're acting like they're being caught flat-footed.” Report author Michelle Solomon said it’s “likely not a coincidence” that “many utilities have expressed that they are concerned about these rules and kind of spinning up hype right now right before the rules come out,” while the report’s other author, Eric Gimon said that in D.C., fossil fuel allies are misleadingly framing the problem and pushing the “overall narrative of ‘we can't do it,’” saying that “they crank up the volume when they need to.” Volts, [4/24/24, 4/24/24]
- ## The regulations were designed to comply with the Supreme Court’s controversial 2022 West Virginia v. EPA decision, but right-wing media figures still argue or suggest they are unconstitutional
- In 2022, the Supreme Court’s conservative majority issued a ruling in West Virginia v. EPAthat limits the EPA’s power to make power plants cut the toxic pollution that is driving the climate crisis. The Supreme Court’s ruling was centered specifically on the EPA’s authority under the Clean Air Act as applied to the Obama-era Clean Power Plan, which was never fully implemented and is not currently under consideration by the Biden administration. Vox, [6/30/22]
- The EPA designed the new regulations to comply with the 2022 court decision.NPR wrote: “In 2022, the Supreme Court weighed in again and restricted the EPA's options for regulating power plant emissions. Justices said that without a specific law, the agency cannot force the entire power generation industry to move away from fossil fuels toward less-polluting energy sources. So, instead, the EPA has created regulations governing individual power plants.” NPR, [4/25/24]
- Former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy called on “the next U.S. president to hold agencies accountable for illegal overreach,” using the West Virginia vs. EPAdecision. Outlining an argument that other right-wing media figures and lawmakers are using to claim that EPA still does not have the authority to enforce the new rules, Ramaswamy wrote, “The single most important Supreme Court ruling this century is West Virginia v EPA. ...Now, if a federal reg has a major economic or policy impact, it must be passed by *Congress*, not a 3-letter agency. Everyday citizens, businesses, and the next U.S. President can finally hold these agencies accountable for their illegal overreach.” Twitter/X, [4/25/24]
- Power the Future Executive Director Daniel Turner told OAN host Monica Paige that states will “push back” on the rule change using West Virginia v. EPA, saying Biden has “violated” it “before.”“EPA vs. West Virginia, which came out in 2022, was a huge ruling in favor of states rights. I'm sure they will use that as precedent, but Biden doesn't pay attention to the Supreme Court, right? He's violated West Virginia vs. EPA before. I'm hoping there are enough states attorney generals.” One America News, *OAN 8 am News with Stephanie Myers*, [4/26/24]
- Climate denier Steve Milloy called the rule “unconstitutional,” saying it violates West Virginia v. EPA.Twitter/X, [4/25/24, 4/27/24; Media Matters, 10/13/21]
- The Daily Caller: “‘Extreme And Unlawful Overreach’: Biden Admin Unveils Final Plan To Push Climate Agenda On America’s Power Grid.”Daily Caller author Nick Pope wrote that “energy sector experts are warning that the rules could cause serious reliability issues that would harm the American economy.” The “experts'' are from fossil fuel trade associations and the Edison Electric Institute, which has helped lobbyists and fossil fuel industry executives develop controversial strategies for fighting renewable energy campaigns. Michelle Bloodworth, CEO of the coal trade association America’s Power, called the rule package “Clean Power Plan 2.0” and an “extreme and unlawful overreach that endangers America’s supply of dependable and affordable electricity.” She added that it is “the same kind of overreach that caused the U.S. Supreme Court to reject EPA’s first Clean Power Plan in 2022.” The Daily Caller, [4/25/24]

:{after a slew of whale deaths along the east coast of the U.S., right-wing media have been promoting false fossil fuel industry talking points about offshore wind projects on Facebook.
Media Matters found that in the first two months of 2023, from January 1 - March 1:
Of the 288 posts that mention wind energy, nearly 84% specifically mentioned the unsubstantiated claim that offshore wind farms impact whale populations. These posts received 73,457 (73%) out of 101,277 interactions on posts about wind energy.
22 out of the top 50 most-interacted with posts about offshore wind energy contained misinformation claiming that they may be responsible for whale deaths on the East Coast.
None of the posts with misinformation had fact-checks from Facebook moderators, and nearly all of them were from right-leaning pages.}:
Right-leaning pages earned 90% of interactions on posts about wind energy.
Many posts that did not contain misinformation still promoted a misleading narrative about offshore wind projects.
According to NOAA and other experts, there is no evidence that proposed offshore projects have contributed to what the agency is calling an “unusual mortality event.”
:{Ramping up offshore wind development has been a focus of Biden’s energy agenda. In 2021, the administration set a goal of deploying 30 Gigawatts of offshore wind by 2030. More recently, the Inflation Reduction Act granted $100 million for offshore wind projects and reopened additional areas for lease in the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic for wind development.
This effort, along with concerns over what is causing whale mortality, has mobilized clean energy opponents and sparked extensive coverage and discussion on Facebook, driven almost entirely by right-leaning pages.}:
84% of Facebook posts about wind energy also mentioned whale populations
Out of the 288 posts on the topic of wind energy from the study period, 241, or 84%, specifically mentioned whale populations. From December 1 to March 1, 16 humpback whales have been stranded on or near beaches in states along the Atlantic coast, mostly in New Jersey and New York. North Atlantic Right Whales have also been experiencing an unusual mortality event along the Atlantic Coast since 2017; 6 have been found dead so far in 2023.
Currently, there are only two functional wind farms in the U.S., with about 20 proposed offshore wind projects in various stages of development in 11 states along the East Coast. This has become the perfect opportunity for anti-renewable activists and fossil fuels industry shills posing as environmentalists sympathetic to the plight of whales to launch a public relations and legal campaign in opposition to these offshore wind projects.
Right-wing media, and particularly Fox News, have propelled these efforts in response to Biden’s push for offshore wind. One of the top posts with the most interactions, about 1,600, featured a FoxNews.com article with a headline that read, “SOMETHING FISHY: Congressman says green energy projects may be to blame for animal deaths.” That Congressman isRep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), who introduced legislation that would mandate a federal investigation into the role wind energy development may have played in the recent uptick in whale deaths.
Fox News article with image of beached whale
Smith isn’t the only lawmaker that spoke out after extensive right-wing media coverage. Reps. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ), Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD), as well as a dozen New Jersey mayors have all called for a moratorium on offshore wind construction.
Another popular post was a screenshot of a tweet from Monica Crowley, a right-wing podcaster, former Trump official, and former Fox News contributor. The post suggests environmentalists do not care about whales dying because, in this instance, it does not fit their political agenda. It was shared by several pages affiliated with The Western Journal, including the Tea Party Community and Conservative Tribune. The February 13 tweet itself had over 100,000 likes, shares, and comments.

22 out of the top 50 posts with the most interactions about offshore wind and whales contained misinformation on the topic.
Nearly half of the top 50 posts examined by Media Matters incorrectly linked whale deaths to offshore wind projects.
The most popular post from our study, which had nearly 19,500 interactions, was a clip from the January 11 edition of Fox News’ Jesse Watters Primetime where Watters claimed that surveying for wind projects is killing whales. On January 11, Watters did a segment on his prime time show where he attempted to misleadingly portray Protect Our Coasts NJ as a grassroots oceans advocacy organization.

The second most popular post, which had almost 15,500 interactions came from Power the Future, whose founder, Daniel Turner, is an alumnus of the Charles Koch Institute. The post links to an opinion piece by Turner claiming that “radical environmentalists” are blaming whale deaths on fishing communities when they should, without evidence, be blaming wind farms.
Power The Future posts an article about "radical wind farm activists" from the Daily Caller
None of the posts were labeled as misleading by Facebook fact-checkers
None of the posts which contained blatant misinformation were labeled as such by Facebook through its fact-checking partnerships. In general, these posts failed to note NOAA’s statement on the topic or statements from any experts that have pointed out the improbability of a connection between the mortality event and offshore wind, especially given that whales face many other risks such as vessel strikes and entanglement. Some posts also accused environmentalists, Democrats and the Biden administration of being dismissive about the plight of whales. In reality, Biden’s massive investments in renewable energy may actually be key to helping save marine life; burning fossil fuels is impacting the species by limiting the availability of their food and changing marine migration patterns.
Other social media posts that were not included in this study and contain similar misinformation on the topic have been repeatedly fact-checked by other sites.
:{Many posts that did not contain misinformation still promoted a misleading narrative about offshore wind projects
Several posts Media Matters looked at featured articles and reports from USA Today, NPR, POLITICO, and Greenpeace that called out this misinformation campaign around offshore wind.
However, these debunks were outnumbered by content that, even if it acknowledged the lack of evidence to support anti-wind talking points, still gave them credence by repeating them over and over again without an immediate debunk and framing the issue as a real debate when very few groups actually disagree with NOAA, and those that do have no evidence to support their claims. Some coverage is also omitting or muddling key details about how far along the wind projects are to make them seem more directly correlated with whale deaths. }:
Even left-leaning pages were complicit in this. For example, a NowThis video asked: “Could Offshore Wind Developments be Causing Whales to Die?” The answer is no, but that isn’t evident until the end of the video.
All in all, the fact that content about all of the benefits offshore wind could bring to coastal communities paled in comparison to perceived harms reveals the success of fossil fuel industry propaganda online.
Is offshore wind killing whales?
Conservative New Jersey activist jumps into anti-wind crusade
Out of all of the posts about whales and offshore wind, 31 posts (13%) came from the page of a conservative activist Joseph Rudy Rullo, who unsuccessfully ran for New Jersey governor in 2017. So far, in 2023, Rullo has dedicated his Facebook page which has 384,000 followers, to spreading misinformation about offshore wind development and bashing New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy for opting to not implement a moratorium on offshore wind development off of the New Jersey coast. He has also been used as a source on the topic for local New Jersey news.
Rullo has directed his followers to take steps to actively oppose offshore wind projects, such as attending New Jersey EPA meetings as well as the February 19 rally to “save the whales.” At the rally, “organizers” with the fossil fuel industry front group Protect Our Oceans NJ addressed the crowd along with lawmakers.
Right-leaning pages posted the most about wind energy compared to left-leaning and ideologically nonaligned pages
Right-leaning pages that post about news and politics have almost completely dominated the Facebook conversation about wind energy in general, not just offshore wind. Right-leaning pages posted more often, and earned more total interactions than either nonaligned or left-leaning pages. Right-leaning pages earned over 91,300 interactions on posts about wind energy, or 90% of all interactions on posts about wind energy, while nonaligned pages earned over 5,800 interactions (6%), and left-leaning pages earned 4,077 interactions (4%).
Right-leaning Facebook pages made 192 posts about wind energy issues, over twice the volume of nonaligned pages, which had 81 posts. Left-leaning pages made just 15 posts. All in all, right-leaning pages made up 67%, or nearly three-quarters of Facebook posts about wind energy.
These posts mainly focused on offshore wind projects and marine life, but also pushed misinformation about the functionality of wind turbines on land and their environmental impact, in addition to making exaggerated statements about how often they experience structural issues.
For example, one Newsmax headline suggested that green energy is flawed while in the same video a Newsmax correspondent admitted that according to the Department of Energy, the “reliability rate of a wind turbine is about 98% so these collapses and failures are quite rare by industry standards.”
Jon Glasgow on wind turbines on American Agenda
The threat that wind turbines pose to birds, which has long been exaggerated and pale in comparison to other threats to avian life such as climate change, buildings, pesticides, and domestic cats was also a theme. The idea has been a staple of climate change deniers with deep ties to the fossil fuel industry, such as Robert Bryce and more recently resurrected by renewable energy skeptics on Twitter.
Methodology
Using CrowdTangle, Media Matters compiled a list of 1,773 Facebook pages that frequently posted about U.S. politics from January 1 to August 25, 2020.
For an explanation of how we compiled pages and identified them as right-leaning, left-leaning, or ideologically nonaligned, see the methodology here.
The resulting list consisted of 771 right-leaning pages, 497 ideologically nonaligned pages, and 505 left-leaning pages.
Using CrowdTangle, Media Matters compiled all posts for the pages on this list that were related to wind energy or whales deaths that contained the keywords: “wind energy,” “wind turbines,” “wind turbine,” “wind farm,” “wind farms,” “offshore wind,” “wind projects,” “wind project,” “wind development," “dead whale,” “whale death,” or “whale deaths” in the post itself or in the headline or description of any included link from January 1, 2023, through March 1, 2023.
Two Media Matters researchers then reviewed the posts to determine which ones were relevant to the topic of wind energy, and which were relevant to the topic of offshore wind and whales specifically.
Finally, researchers coded 50 posts with the most interactions to determine whether they contained misinformation about offshore wind and whale mortality. Misinformation in this case was defined as the suggestion that there is evidence that offshore wind development, most frequently the sonar used in undersea surveys, has been or may be contributing to whale deaths. If coding differed, posts were reviewed and discussed to reach a consensus.

The non-profit that feeds the conservative Daily Caller website co-founded by Fox News host Tucker Carlson has accepted tens of thousands of dollars from entities and individuals who have received favorable coverage, including some who authored opinion pieces, a new filing shows.
The document—the Daily Caller News Foundation’s fiscal year 2021 tax statement—includes for thefirst time a list of donors to the 501(c)(3) organization, a group that is not required by law to disclose donor information. The filing also reveals that Carlson, who in 2020 announced he was leaving the Daily Caller and selling his stake in the website, is still the foundation chairman, and has not cut back on his hours.
When Carlson announced his split with the Daily Caller in 2020, he cited work constraints. “I’m just too absorbed in what I’m doing,” the host told **The Wall Street Journal** at the time, explaining, “I wasn’t helping in any way, because I’ve got an hour to do every night” on his Fox News program. The tax filing, which covers the following year, shows he continued to hold the chairman position and put in the same hours as in all previous foundation filings—five hours a week.
Many of the foundation’s donors are tied to industries and issues that the Caller covers frequently. Most notable is the Ariel Corporation, which manufactures natural gas compressors and gave $135,000 to support the news organization—which has for years been criticized for its pro-carbon energy reporting and financial ties to the Koch brothers, the right-wing industrialists.
Other donors have an even closer relationship with the site, including some who have published pieces in their own names, without a disclosure of their financial ties. That, according to top journalism ethics expert Kelly McBride raises ethics questions.
“With any news organization that solicits donations, you really have to have an editorial policy that articulates how you separate out your loyalty to your audience and to your journalistic mission from your ties to your donors,” McBride, who is senior vice president and chair of the Craig Newmark Center for Ethics and Leadership at the Poynter Institute, told The Daily Beast.
such a policy, she said, would ideally include an advisement to donors that they can’t influence editorial work, and a promise of transparency whenever there’s a conflict of interest.
“You’re looking for, first of all, separation between fundraising and the editorial product, and you’re also looking for clarity around what donors can expect in exchange for their donation, as well as transparency so the audience understands,” McBride said, adding that “a tagline on an op-ed would be an obvious transparency mechanism.”
The Daily Beast reached out to the Daily Caller and Carlson for comment, but did not immediately receive a reply.
The journalistic and ethical standards published on the Daily Caller website don’t mention the foundation or any policy regarding donor influence over editorial content. But some donors have contributed content themselves.
For instance, RightForge, an internet infrastructure provider that caters to conservatives, in 2021 gave the foundation $7,500. In May of that year, the Daily Caller ran an op-ed from RightForge CEO Martin Avila, criticizing what Avila called the social media “witch trial” of former President Donald Trump. Months later, RightForge announced it would host Trump’s new social media network, Truth Social.
Real estate investor Adam Milstein gave the foundation $25,000 in 2021 and published an opinion piece that same year. The piece—titled, “Strategic Active Philanthropy Can Strengthen Our American Values”—includes a brief bio for Milstein, which describes him only as “an active philanthropist, an investor, and community leader.”
While the Daily Caller has been blasted for its affinity for the fossil fuel industry, the tax filing shows the Daily Caller News Foundation received financial backing from conservative green-energy group ClearPath Action, which gave $10,000 in 2021.
ClearPath has received favorable coverage from the Daily Caller, which earlier this year cited CEO Rich Powell in an article about his group, without a disclaimer. When Powell landed a Daily Caller op-ed earlier this month, the outlet added a note to the piece and his contributor page that read, “The views and opinions expressed in this commentary are those of the author and do not reflect the official position of the Daily Caller News Foundation.” But those notes did not mention the financial relationship.
Then there’s Daniel Oliver, a Daily Caller regular contributor who also serves as trustee of the George E. Coleman Jr. Foundation, which gave the foundation $7,500 in 2021. The Daily Caller highlights some of Oliver’s rich experience in his bio—chair of the Education and Research Institute, director of Pacific Research Institute for Public Policy, and former chairmanships of the Federal Trade Commission under President Ronald Reagan and the National Review”—but doesn’t mention his role with the Coleman Foundation, or the donor relationship. (Buzzfeed News reported in 2019 that the foundation was a FDRLST Media investor, citing Oliver’s role.)
An even more influential GOP figure also appears in the filing, in the form of a $10,000 gift from CRC Advisors, a group headed up by arch-conservative megadonor and judicial activist Leonard Leo. The Daily Caller published a piece on Friday based on the results of a CRC poll, without disclosing the relationship. The two groups also show overlap in their employees, including current CRC vice president Kevin Daley, whose LinkedIn page says he left the Daily Caller in 2020 after four years as a reporter.
Power the Future,a nonprofit that advocates for the fossil fuel industry, donated $10,000 in 2021 and appears frequently enough in the Daily Caller that articles about the group have their own tag on the site. Since the donation, Power the Future Executive Director Daniel Turner has been cited in multiple Daily Caller pieces as an expert voice, without no mention of his status as a foundation donor.
Justin Olson , an elected Arizona utility regulatorand former Arizona GOP Senate candidate, gave the foundation $10,000 in 2021, listing his role at the time as an officer with right-wing youth activist group Turning Point USA.
The Daily Caller has given TPUSA favorable coverage, including after the donation. It also published an exclusive report in November 2021, the month after Olson announced his bid, revealing that a Scottsdale school board official had access to a so-called Google Drive “dossier” of personal information of vocal conservatives. (Police cleared the official of wrongdoing.) Olson tweeted the article when it came out, and expressed repeated outrage at the story on the platform, while a Twitter search shows he had not tweeted about schools previously.
The filing reveals the names of 2021 donors, but does not indicate whether they had donated before. Some of the contributors who present apparent conflicts of interest have had contributor roles in the publication previously, such as Leo and Adam Milstein, who published op-eds in 2018 and 2019. In 2018, when Power the Future announced its debut, the Daily Caller had the exclusive story.
There are, of course, numerous examples of media companies drawing funding from non-profit backers. But the Daily Caller and the DCNF have a unique relationship.
The foundation was created in 2011, a few years after Carlson founded the Daily Caller with then-partner Neil Patel, who still helms the operation. Thanks to the organization’s non-profit status, the foundation can subsidize not only publication costs, but the production of the actual content—with a built-in tax break.
Part of the foundation’s stated mission is to train young reporters, but its staff also generates content, which the Daily Caller then gets to post to its site for free. And while this content is nominally available to any publication,The Washington Postreported that it’s rarely used by anyone beyond the Daily Caller. A 2017 Center for Media and Democracy report found that the Daily Caller published “virtually everything” the nonprofit churned out.
However, other groups have taken advantage of the arrangement. The fact-checking site Snopes reported in 2019 that conservative political activists appropriated foundation content to populate a number of small-time websites styling themselves as local news outlets to smuggle political content to unsuspecting audiences.
The Daily Caller has also been called out for its financial and political ties to Trump’s campaign, which shelled out about $150,000 for access to the Daily Caller email list in the 2016 election, the Center for Media and Democracy reported.
One of the most familiar examples of a donor-funded news organization would be National Public Radio. While NPR gets some government grants, most of its money comes from private contributors—including from industries it reports on. But McBride noted that NPR puts disclaimers on stories that may present an apparent conflict.
“When you listen to public media, you hear that certain people give money for certain lines of reporting, like for climate change, et cetera. So you can fund a line of reporting, but you get no influence over how that news is presented, and public media also lets the audience know when that funding may intersects with the reporting,” McBride said.
It’s unclear whether any Daily Caller News Foundation donors tabbed their contributions for specific issues or series. But some well-known issues-driven names populate the list, including top GOP megadonor and election-denial enthusiast Dick Uihlein ($25,000), anti-climate change groups the Bradley Foundation ($50,000) and Sarah Scaife Foundation ($350,000), and conservative free-market underwriters Searle Freedom Trust ($230,000).
The source of the biggest donation, however, is still unknown. That would be the $400,000 the group received through DonorsTrust, a nonprofit known as a conservative dark money “ATM,” which allows funders to channel money anonymously to various recipients. The foundation also got a $300,000 injection from someone identified as “anonymous.”
The Daily Caller operation—which has been exposed forties to white nationalists—has been widely criticized on the left for its financial ties to energy interests, most specificallyCharles Koch, who has provided millions in funding over the years, and at one point reportedly accounted for more than 83 percent of the foundation’s annual revenue.
That bankroll swelled between 2020 and 2021. The foundation’s fiscal year 2020 filing shows $1.57 million in contributions, a number thatnearly doubled to $2.8 million the next year, according to the 2021 document. The foundation spent $1.4 million—$254,000 of it on fundraising—which, combined with previous assets, left it with a year-end balance of about $2.1 million.

Extinction Rebellion is advocating on American soil with backing from wealthy foreigners to take down the domestic fossil fuel industry that supports around 10 million American jobs and generated $180 billion in revenue last year.

JANUARY 9, 2020
Power the Future has written previous blog posts on the radical group Extinction Rebellion (XR) that has quickly risen to become the most disruptive environmental movement on the earth. Their message is simple: bring economic disruption to target cities in order to advocate for action on climate change through orchestrating protests across the U.S and abroad.
RealClear Investigations reports:
Critics have called XR a cult, citing co-founder Gail Bradbrook’s admission that a bender on psychedelic drugs inspired her epiphany that humanity is at the brink of extinction. Undeterred, (British billionaire and XR’s largest disclosed donor) Sir Christopher Hohn said he had donated £50,000 (about $65,000) to XR personally and a separate £150,000 (roughly $196,000) through the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, a hybrid charity/hedge fund he founded and operates.
Amid wide alarm about foreign meddling in American politics, Hohn’s support for an organization advocating an uprising against the U.S. government has drawn little notice. Yet court filings and tax records show that he is a billion-dollar non-plastic straw stirring a global network of climate policy influence. He thus illustrates the reach of politically driven philanthropy and the potential of wealthy foreigners to sidestep U.S. lobbying laws by using complex financial arrangements to pursue both civic and self-interested goals.
Extinction Rebellion is advocating on American soil with backing fromwealthy foreigners to take down the domestic fossil fuel industry that supports around 10 million American jobs and generated $180 billion in revenue last year. The group has held protests in a few American cities, including Chicago, New York, and Washington, D.C. where 2,000 of its volunteers blocked 22 intersections in the nation’s Capital as a demonstration during rush hour to disrupt hardworking American’s commute home.
The group’s validity has been in question since the start, but one fact remains true – the policies they promote will bring economic disruption to the masses. Unfortunately, the majority of those masses being American energy workers.

OPINION
John Kerry just reminded us of how unserious a statesman he really is
By Daniel Turner
February 25, 2022 8:58pm Updated
John Kerry, US special envoy for climate, speaks at the 58th Munich Security Conference in Munich, Germany.
John Kerry's main concern about the Russian invasion of Ukraine is, you guessed it, the climate.

‘Not my lane’: John Kerry sidesteps China’s human rights violations]
To state the obvious, John Kerry is an unserious person. That’s not a reference to his wind-surfing or flip-flops or other classic campaign faux pas from days gone by.
With Ukraine suffering death and destruction at the hands of Vladimir Putin’s military, Kerry shared his true concern about the conflict: climate.
“A war is the last thing you need with respect to a united effort to try to deal with the climate challenge,” Kerry told a Reuters reporter. He then decried the “emissions” consequences of Russia’s invasion, adding, “You’re going to lose people’s focus . . . certainly big country attention, because they will be diverted” from the climate agenda.
Kerry’s remarks are aloof, callous, clueless — but, most of all, unserious.
In fact, hisclimate agenda is partly to blame for the current geopolitical mess. The Biden administration, from its first day in office, unleashed an attack on our once-robust energy industry. In pursuit of the Green New Deal, the socialist utopia that would ban the combustion engine, regulate diets and employ solar panels and wind turbines alone to power the nation, President Joe Biden & Co. sought to get rid of fossil fuels.
Russian President Vladimir Putin enters a hall to chair a Security Council meeting in Moscow, Russia.]
Alexei Nikolsky, Sputnik, Kremlin Pool/AP]
But by throttling the industry, they cut the global supply and prices rose accordingly. That hurt Americans, while making Vladimir Putin rich.
And a Vladimir Putin with surplus cash is a dangerous thing.
America’s shortsighted climate-change efforts are destabilizing world peace. This was not Biden or Kerry’s intention, but it is the consequence — and the more dangerous the world becomes, the more unserious “climate change” hysteria is.
[Get the latest updates in the Russia-Ukraine conflict with the Post’s live coverage.
Telling Putin not to invade Ukraine because of emissions is akin to lecturing those fleeing Kyiv to mask up and social distance. It’s a luxury they don’t have.
That is the climate agenda: the luxury of privileged elites. Families who can’t afford their heating bill or grocery bill thanks to energy-price-caused inflation don’t have the luxury of fretting about climate change. The 7,000 US soldiers headed to Germany right now don’t have the luxury of handwringing about their climate footprint.
John Kerry does, and he loves luxury, too.
Asked about the green contradiction of traveling on his private jet to win an environmental award in 2019, the unserious statesman claimed it was “the only choice for someone like me.” Reporters have tracked numerous such Air Kerry flights. Emissions? What emissions?
U.S. climate envoy John Kerry speaks during a press conference with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, at the foreign ministry headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.
With Ukraine suffering death and descrution at the hands of Vladimir Putin’s military, Kerry shared his true concern about the conflict: climate.
Kerry made his latest cringeworthy comments in Egypt as preparations begin for COP27, the international climate-change conference coming this fall to the Red Sea resort town of Sharm-el-Sheikh. If you’re going to fuss about the climate, you might as well do it in comfort. Last year’s conference in Glasgow, Scotland, boasted 40,000 people in attendance, along with 670 private jets: Kerry isn’t the only green hypocrite.
We didn’t elect John Kerry, so as climate czarin the White House, he’s unaccountable to Congress and therefore the American people who pay his salary. No one gets to look at his budgets. No one has oversight over his meetings, but there he goes on his private jet committing the United States to emissions reductions and punitive measures on fossil fuels.

Meanwhile, the real threats are Russia, China, Iran and North Korea continuing to build weapons, steal technology, launch cyberattacks, engage in terrorism and now start a full-scale war, the likes of which Europe hasn’t seen in 75 years.
Take the threat of climate change seriously when John Kerry forgoes the private jets and luxury mega-conferences. Worry about rising sea levels when John Kerry sells his oceanfront mansion.
Until then, we need to stop the attack on America’s energy industry, attacks that have strengthened our enemies and weakened our own nation. Until we reverse Biden’s reckless and dangerous energy policies, we don’t have the luxury of worrying about tomorrow when we can’t afford life today.

What does it mean to embrace freedom? Not the political notion of freedom... not elections and talking points and looped videos of Old Glory in the amber waves of grain... but the notions of freedom which reach back thousands of years. Those deeply held principles and beliefs which bind Harvey Milk and Lucretia Mott to Cato and Rousseau: human dignity, individual rights, civil liberties, healthy societies.
My job at CKI is to tell stories of freedom applied: Criminal Justice Reform, Foreign Policy, Tolerance. It's highlighting the destructive power of cronyism and corporate welfare, and advocating a space where technology and innovation can thrive.
It's not an easy job, because authentic freedom is not an easy concept to communicate. It is so much easier to advocate the Utopian world of "free" goodies. It's more convenient to scare people into believing incessant overseas wars will keep us safe. It's more common to pit people against each other based on identity.
Freedom is so much more than that. Freedom can be scary, but it is beautiful. It is the only state that truly respects the nobility and dignity of mankind. "Freedom is the revelation of dreams you didn't know you had." I love that quote.
Come know CKI- the greatest advocate for freedom in America. Freedom in academia, freedom in thought, freedom from government coercion, freedom to live, love, and die realizing the fullest of human dignity. And help me tell better stories.
