One of the earliest organized efforts was Young Americans for Freedom, founded by a group of some 90 young activists at conservative publisher William F. These are Gregory L. Schneider’s Cadres for Conservatism: Young Americans for Freedom and the Rise of the Contemporary Right (New York: New York University Press, 1999), John A. Andrew’s The Other Side of the Sixties: Young Americans for Freedom and the Rise of Conservative Politics (New Brunswick, NJ: Rutgers University Press, 1997), and sociologist Rebecca E. Klatch’s A Generation Divided: The New Left, the New Right, and the 1960s (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1999). There are also a handful of accounts from conservative pundits involved in Young Americans for Freedom, notably William F. Buckley Jr.’s Flying High: Remembering Barry Goldwater (New York: Basic Books, 2008) and Wayne J. Thorburn’s (former executive director of Young Americans for Freedom) A Generation Awakes: Young Americans for Freedom and the Creation of the Conservative Movement (Ottawa, IL: Jameson Books, 2010). ]]

This poses another counterfactual: would a similar conservative leadership cadre have developed absent support from organizations like Young America’s Foundation and the Leadership Institute? Ultimately, it seems unlikely that conservative organizations operating independently on college campuses without any kind of overarching political and financial coordination would have developed such a wide-ranging and politically disciplined leadership class. For instance, the broad support that conservative philanthropy has provided to conservative firebrand Dinesh D’Souza, now a bestselling author, suggests that a vibrant conservative ecosystem, both on and off campus, is crucial for cultivating conservative leaders. The Olin Foundation and the Institute for Educational Affairs first supported D’Souza through his right-wing campus newspaper, Dartmouth Review, in the early 1980s. After graduating from Dartmouth, D’Souza secured a John M. Olin Fellowship at the American Enterprise Institute, where he helped popularize the phrase “political correctness” to decry early 1990s campus culture. It seems fair to say that D’Souza owes much of his success to Olin, which can likely be said for many lesser-known conservative thinkers and writers who have reliably promoted free enterprise and procapitalist views.66

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

A survey of the literature on conservative philanthropy in higher education yields the following key themes: The importance of dense networks to achieve immediate and long-term goals. Michael Joyce, a senior official at the Olin Foundation and later the head of the Bradley Foundation, called this the “wine collection” effect; I refer to it as the career pipeline. This pipeline is a way for foundations to invest in conservative figures when they are students or scholars, who mature and eventually contribute to rightwing politics off campus.67

This was the Olin Foundation’s stated goal when it supported writers and activists like Dinesh D’Souza. But it was also a goal of institution-building on college campuses. Multiple foundations funded overlapping efforts at colleges and universities across the United States to establish centers for right-wing thought, and those efforts operated cumulatively over time. The creation of a center of conservative economic thought at the University of Chicago allowed for future successes; even failed attempts like Manne’s entrepreneurship at Rochester and Emory reaped results under different circumstances at George Mason.

The establishment of conservative student groups, from the Federalist Society to undergraduate conservative newspapers, provided a pipeline of talent to these institutions and, in the case of the Federalist Society, eventually provided financial support. Identifying faculty organizational entrepreneurs and sympathetic administrators. From an operational standpoint, this was a critical component of the eventual establishment of conservative centers on campus. When any of the three ingredients (dense networks of donors, dedicated organizational entrepreneurs among faculty, and a sympathetic administration) were lacking—as at the University of Rochester in the 1960s and Emory University in the 1980s—the institution-building efforts failed.

When those three ingredients were present, as they were at Harvard in the late 1980s and George Mason University since the 1970s, the transformations could be profound. The Koch network at George Mason would never have been as successful as it has been without the collaboration of faculty and administrators. A corollary to this is the importance of overcoming institutional resistance. There has been tremendous resistance in the academy to right-wing philanthropy. Three of the right-wing efforts discussed in this review—at the University of Chicago in the 1940s, the University of Rochester in the 1960s, and Emory University in the 1980s—were unsuccessful because of faculty or administration resistance; the successes were possible when support from faculty and, above all, administration was forthcoming.

In 1975 he founded, with the help of fellow YAFer Terry Dolan, the National Conservative Political Action Committee, which would contrive so brilliantly to poison the political atmosphere over the next decade. NCPAC's method was to raise money through terrifying direct-mail solicitations – "the shriller you are, the better it is to raise money," Mr. Dolan said – and then to spend it on terrifying TV commercials assailing this or that liberal politician. In 1980 the group helped defeat four Democratic senators, making it an overnight sensation and an omen of the money-driven, all-negative political future.

NCPAC's calling card was slime. It constantly attacked members of Congress for votes they hadn't cast and positions they hadn't taken – "there have been a few mistakes made in terms of research," was all Mr. Black would admit – and the group's main accomplishment was dodging the campaign-finance laws of the day.

Mr. Dolan was NCPAC's main personality, a boasting bully fond of shocking statements. Goldwater's run for the White House catalyzed YAF more than any other event in its history. A highlight of YAF's movement to make Goldwater the Republican nominee is an astonishing rally in New York's Madison Square Garden where 18,500 conservatives gather to show their support for Senator Goldwater. While attending law school in 2010, he publishedWhite Apocalypse, a novel seething with lethal white supremacist revenge fantasies against Jewish professors, Latino and American Indian activists and staffers of a group clearly modeled on the SPLC. Since then, Bristow has continued to air his extremist views in white nationalist, anti-gay media. He was president of the Young Republicans’ Club at Chippewa Valley High School and has voiced anger about a perceived leftist bias in the local schools. In high school, he read the 2003 book,Treason: Liberal Treachery from the Cold War to the War on Terrorism by far-right attack dog Ann Coulter, which he says inspired a turning point in his political views, evidently to the extreme right.

During his freshman year at Michigan State University, he was elected president of the campus conservative group, Young Americans for Freedom (YAF). Bristow also won an unopposed seat on the student government council. He quickly posted his 13-point agenda as a student representative, a sophomoric document saturated in hate that included capturing undocumented immigrants in the area, cutting school funding for non-heterosexual groups, and giving more representation to men and whites on the student council than others. The council recalled Bristow in a landslide vote after he refused to recant his agenda or resign.

But the young firebrand succeeded in sparking plenty of national publicity during his two years as president of YAF. Ugly public spectacles were his specialty. He planned a ”Catch an Illegal Immigrant Day,” which drew national attention but was later cancelled. He led a “straight power” rally in front of the Lansing City Hall to protest a proposed 2006 law to protect gays, lesbians and bisexuals against bias based on sexual orientation. Protesters held up signs saying “End Faggotry” and “Go Back in the Closet.” In a news release to publicize the event, Bristow wrote: “YAF members find homosexuality and other forms of sexual deviancy to be disgusting. The Boy Scouts, military, and the American public need to be protected from these degenerates.” Under Bristow’s leadership, the campus YAF group also held a “Koran desecration contest.” Based on these and other bigoted acts and statements, the SPLC began listing Michigan State’s YAF club as a hate group in 2007.

One of Bristow’s most inflammatory tactics was inviting virulently racist and anti-Semitic leaders to speak on the MSU campus — acts that triggered disciplinary threats from the national YAF group. Among those speakers was British National Party chairman Nick Griffin, a Holocaust-denier and white supremacist. Another invitee was Jared Taylor, founder of the white nationalist New Century Foundation and editor of itsAmerican Renaissance, a journal that publishes racist articles and hosts periodic national conferences attended by a variety of hardline nationalists that have included neo-Nazis, former Klan leaders and other open white supremacists. Inviting Taylor was a step too far for the national YAF group. In a February 2008 post on the website ofAmerican Renaissance, Bristow disclosed that national YAF had threatened to revoke the campus’ charter if the local group hosted Taylor. In a bitter post, he complained that “YAF does not officially recognize multi-culturalism as a threat to the United States” and railed against “cowards at the university and in ‘conservative’ organizations.” Nevertheless, under heavy pressure from YAF, Bristow resigned from the MSU chapter and Taylor’s lecture was cancelled.

But Bristow clearly was determined to gain more attention for his extremist political views even as he seemed to be preparing for a mainstream career as a lawyer. After graduating from MSU, he started law school at the University of Toledo in 2010. He didn’t just write exams and school papers, though, using his spare time to contribute racist articles articles to The Citizens Informer, the quarterly newspaper of the white supremacist Council of Conservative Citizens.

In 2010, Bristow moved into new territory, writing a novel that reads like the prolonged, violent revenge fantasy of a racist and anti-Semitic fanatic. White Apocalypse, self-published through the Amazon subsidiary CreateSpace, is still available on Amazon. The book takes as its touchstone the “Solutrean Hypothesis,” a widely discredited theory that whites from Europe appeared in North America 15,000 to 17,000 years ago, making them the true “Native Americans.” In Bristow’s version, these whites were massacred by darker-skinned late arrivals. He dedicates the book to “the real Native Americans.” Its publication was hailed by the white power movement as a bracing inspiration for future recruits to their cause.

The hero/narrator of the book wants the Solutrean theory to come to public light. But first he has to squash the evil “Center for Diversity and Multiculturalism,” based in Atlanta. The group, which maintains an active legal staff and “hate group list,” just like the SPLC, is unquestionably modeled on SPLC. But Bristow gets even more personal than that. Two of the fictional group’s staff members are obviously modeled on SPLCIntelligence Report editor and Senior Fellow Mark Potok and Heidi Beirich, director of SPLC’s Intelligence Project. (Beirich’s name is rendered as “Beirman” in the book, and Potok’s stand-in is David Greenberg, who is described as an “oily, curly haired troll.” The Potok character is assassinated in a grisly and meticulously described scene.) When asked about the apparent targeting of Potok and Beirich, Bristow dismissed it entirely, saying in an E-mail to the SPLC beginning “Dear Guttersnipe” that he meant nothing of the kind.

While still a law student in 2012, Bristow published another book, The Conscience of a Right-Winger, a collection of essays with a far-right spin on favorite topics such as the scourge of gun control, immigration and white racial pride. Like White Apocalypse, which was lauded across the extreme right, Bristow’s second book boasts enthusiastic endorsements from racist leaders such as Jared Taylor. A new edition on Amazon combines this nonfiction work with the earlier novel.

After finishing law school in 2012, Bristow appeared to be dropping under the radar as he took up work at a regular day job with the France Law Group in Toledo, Ohio. But not for long. He began to actively seek female clients whose nude photos were posted on online “revenge porn sites” by vindictive ex-partners. He got two of the sites shut down on behalf of clients, and then was interviewed about his efforts by The Wall Street Journal and television’s Katie Couric. Although many observers were surprised by Bristow’s activity actually helping people, he may have shown his real interest when he characterized revenge porn as a manifestation of liberalism and claimed that the majority of its victims are white, blonde women.

A year after joining the Toledo law firm, Bristow left to open his own law practice in Clarkston, Mich., a Detroit suburb. He now bills himself online as an expert in Internet law and also as “able to assist law school graduates who are going through the character and fitness” test required before sitting for the Michigan and Ohio bar exam. (Apparently, he knows something of such problems.)

In December 2013, Bristow publicly teamed with Dan Poole, a recent college-graduate and activist with the white supremacist American Freedom Party, to found The Center for the Advancement of Occidental Culture. The new group’s mission is “to advance and defend Western civilization,” opposing alleged discrimination and harassment of European Americans. Its opening online salvo, on Dec. 31, asked for original articles for its website and financial contributions. Mysteriously, just a month later, the two founders dissolved the new group as a limited liability corporation (Bristow was its chief legal officer, according to a blog post by the Anti-Defamation League) and its website went dead.

YAF's indirect influence is felt through the number of conservative political figures who began their careers as members in college.

From its beginning as an outgrowth of the efforts to obtain the Republican vice presidential nomination for a conservative in 1960 up through its determined campaign to ensure that a conservative vice president was renominated in 1992, YAF was a major player in the politics of late 20th century America.[6]

Although YAF members and chapters were engaged in many projects to influence public policy and elect conservative candidates to office, the leadership of the organization was well aware that their goals and objectives were more long-term. YAF was recruiting, training and preparing young people to assume even more important roles later in life. YAF spawned many of the organizational elements of the 21st century conservative movement and provided the leadership and manpower to build those publications, organizations, and foundations into the significant elements of American society that they are today.[1]

Creating a conservative movement

YAF played a critical role in the development of many of the new conservative organizations that were established in the 1960s, 1970s and beyond. Those who were college students and young adults active in YAF went on to form new groups or serve as important personnel in conservative organizations founded by others. To fully understand the influence of YAF on the creation of a lasting movement in America, it is helpful to view those organizations formed by YAF alumni and then those which YAFers have played an important contributing role.[8]

Founded in March 1961, one year after the creation of YAF, its first issue appeared under the editorship of Lee Edwards. Starting out as a sixteen page publication it grew in size and continued as a monthly or ten times a year magazine until 1978 when it was converted to a quarterly magazine with interim newsletters, and was published sporadically thereafter. As the initial editorial noted,[14]

We are sick unto death of collectivism, socialism, statism and the other utopian isms which have poisoned the minds, weakened the wills and smothered the spirits of Americans for three decades and more.[14]

”

The New Guard served as the voice of Goldwater-Buckley and American conservative youth for decades, but in the 1990s, during the rebuilding years of YAF, the magazine went defunct.

Today, similar to the situation in 1961 when the hard Left decided to take the country down the path of "collectivism, socialism, statism and the other utopian isms," the conservative youth have been re-invigorated, launching a renewed call for the American values of limited government, individual liberty, free markets, traditional values, strong defense and adherence to the Constitution.

In 2010 The New Guard was relaunched and saw its debut at CPAC 2010. Under the guidance of YAF's former Executive Director Jordan Marks, and The New Guard's current Executive Editor, Christopher Bedford, YAF gathered a group of writers, editors and artists to re-found The New Guard. The re-launch came 49 years after it first stood up against a liberal elite that believed Conservatism was dead and socialism was king.

Currently The New Guard is published quarterly and is handed out to thousands of young conservatives across the country.

Philosophy

Since its founding, YAF continuously identified itself as "conservative". However, the term "conservative" has changed in meaning over several generations. Before World War II, most American conservatives were non-interventionist. But as the Cold War began to dominate American foreign policy, the old conservatism disintegrated. After Robert Taft was defeated for the Republican nomination in 1952, non-interventionist conservatism mostly vanished. In the 1950s, a new kind of conservatism arose. This new ideology was formulated in large part by the newspaper Human Events, the magazine National Review, and National Review's editor William F. Buckley, Jr. This new conservatism combined free-market economics, respect for traditional values, orderly society and anti-communism.

In the late 1960s, the term libertarianism began to be used for a political philosophy. Many of those who popularized this term were initially part of the conservative movement, but came to separate themselves from the conservatives on certain issues. Libertarians within YAF believed, for example, the military draft was a violation of the individual freedom the organization claimed to embrace. To oppose it they were willing to reject existing laws against burning draft cards and supported those who fled to Canada or went underground when drafted for military service. The conservatives (or traditionalists as they were sometimes called)also opposed the draft directed their efforts towards changing the law. In the end, the goals of both groups were achieved, and YAF was "in the forefront of the drive to end the draft and create a volunteer military."

After 1969, the relationship between conservatives and libertarians in YAF was often rocky.[15] A majority of members identified themselves simply as conservative, but some identified as both conservative and libertarian, and still others identified themselves simply as libertarian. From time to time, power struggles broke out; when this happened, the libertarians almost always ended up losing.

In later years, new viewpoints would be amalgamated by the conservative movement, including neoconservatism in the early 1970s, the New Right in the late 1970s and the Religious Right in the 1980s. Some YAF members identified with some of these philosophies, others opposed them and still others were content to simply identify themselves as conservative without further specificity.

Since its founding, YAF members on college campuses focused primarily on national and international politics, rather than on-campus politics. Thus members were much more likely to pass out handbills for a candidate for Congress than for student body president.

YAF members fell squarely on Goldwater's side and spearheaded the campaign of Barry Goldwater for president. Hotel management at the Gault Hotel refused accommodations to Don Parker, an African-American delegate from Brooklyn. As word of this spread around the YAFer's in attendance, a number of delegates and numerous others began gathering in the lobby of the hotel demanding that either the Gault Hotel allow all the black YAFers to stay and the hotel change its segregation policy or YAF would move the convention to another site. From that day on any person was allowed into the Gault Hotel.

By 1964, YAF was a major force in the campaign to nominate Goldwater, and then after his nomination, to elect him president. Goldwater's run for the White House catalyzed YAF more than any other event in its history. Lee Edwards, former New Guard editor, said "Barry Goldwater made YAF, but YAF also made Barry Goldwater." Goldwater's massive defeat in the presidential election of 1964 demoralized many members.

YAF's plan to distribute 500,000 flyers at the Indianapolis 500 was seen as a key to the decision by Firestone executives to cancel their Romanian plans in April 1965.

These fights carried YAF into its second decade.

YAF members tended to hold similar opinions to their older compatriots within the conservative movement. YAF began and continued a number of projects to support Vietnam veterans and their causes. "Project Appreciation" gave YAFers the opportunity to write, visit, and provide needed supplies to hospitalized veterans. YAF worked on various POW/MIA issues and treasonous "Hanoi" Jane Fonda became a target of YAF attacks. While U.S. soldiers were fighting in the fields of Vietnam, YAF was fighting on the college campuses and in communities across the country. YAF, though opposing the draft, supported the move to resist communism in Southeast Asia and in American classrooms. Most Members vocally supported an aggressive policy of seeking victory in the Vietnam War, but opposed how the war was being conducted, such as the use of conscription and allowing the enemy sanctuary in the Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam.

A faction of YAF philosophically extended the group's traditional support of limited government in economic issues to social issues and a foreign policy of non-interventionism. This group came to be known as libertarians. A more serious and lasting challenge for YAF came from this group, those who believed in limited or even no government - radical libertarians and anarchists.[19] Members of this faction were among the founding members of the Libertarian Party in 1971. YAF went on the offensive when President Nixon enacted wage controls, price controls, abandoned the gold standard and opened relations with the communist People's Republic of China, ceasing relations with Taiwan. YAF felt he was abandoning conservative principles so YAF publicly denounced the administration for these moves, becoming the first conservative organization to do so.

A number of YAF projects were started as ad hoc committees and affiliated groups to address specific issues. These groups include Youth for the Voluntary Prayer Amendment, Student's Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, Young America's Foundation, Free Campus News Service, STOP-NSA Committee, and the National Student Committee for Victory in Vietnam. During many local and national races throughout this era, YAF members were divided about whether to support a moderately conservative electable candidate or to support a staunchly conservative long-shot candidate.

YAF supported Reagan's almost-successful bid to win the Republican presidential nomination in 1976 and his victorious race for the presidency in 1980.

The Carter Administration was an easy target of YAF. With government growth the order of the day, Carter's policies flew in the face of all that YAF stood for. YAF was active in opposing the Panama Canal and SALT treaties. The Iran Hostage Crisis focused public criticism on the Carter Administration and provided YAF a rallying point in 1979. The election of Reagan ushered in the conservative decade. YAFers around the nation mobilized in support of Reagan's agenda.

Many YAFers received appointments to the Reagan Administration.
