Winning Team Publishing is a conservative publishing house founded in 2021 by Sergio Gor and Donald Trump Jr.[1][2]

The publisher was founded after Trump failed to secure a memoir deal from the Big Five publishers, in part due to fact-checking concerns.[2][3] Trump has earned millions in royalties from the project.[4][5]

As of 2022, approximately 80% percent of the United States trade market for books was controlled by the "Big Five" publishing houses: Penguin Random House, Hachette, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, and Macmillan.[27]

The publisher has published various authors, including Jeanine Pirro, Charlie Kirk, Kari Lake, and President Donald Trump. President Trump's three coffee table style books have been successful including his latest book, Save America, debuting on the New York Times best seller list.[6][7]

In 2023, Hudson Booksellers refused to carry the publisher's books.[8][9]

bout David Limbaugh

All nine of David Limbaugh’s books are national bestsellers, including Guilty by Reason of Insanity, The Great Destroyer, Jesus on Trial, and Jesus is Risen. He is a lawyer, and a nationally syndicated columnist with Creators Syndicate, Townhall.com, WorldNetDaily, Jewish World Review, and Newsmax.

David Limbaugh was chosen by Christian authors Norman Geisler and Frank Turek to write the foreword to their book in 2004. In the book, Limbaugh states that he became a Christian after years of being a skeptic and that he now has a strong interest in Christian apologetics. Limbaugh describes himself as “an evangelical Christian”.

David Limbaugh is the brother of radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh, and lives in Cape Giradeau, Missouri with his wife Lisa. They have five children.

Reviews of David Limbaugh Books

Guilty by Reason of Insanity

“Today’s Democrats are pushing policies that are simply insane, and David Limbaugh proves it in his terrific, and tremendously important, new book, Guilty by Reason of Insanity.”

— Mark Levin, nationally syndicated radio talk show host

“Few pundits can match David Limbaugh for research, depth of knowledge, and political insight, and in this book, perhaps his best political book, he shows how the Democrat Party has completely lost its mind.”

— Sean Hannity

Finding Jesus in the Old Testament

“If you’ve ever wondered what ties the Old Testament and the New Testament together, then this is the book for you. It’s the best Christian layman’s guide to the Old Testament I’ve ever read. Fascinating-and highly recommended!”

— Sean Hannity

The True Jesus

“In The True Jesus, the Son of God of the Gospels truly comes alive for readers. This is the Case for Christ from the life of Jesus Himself–and Limbaugh tells it in a way that will inspire you to read and study the Gospels like never before.”

— Lee Strobel, author

Jesus on Trial

“Many people know my friend David Limbaugh as a bestselling author and political commentator. But he is also a lawyer trained to analyze evidence—and in Jesus on Trial he provides his personal journey to the truth of the Bible. A fantastic book!”

— Sean Hannity

Jesus is Risen

“My brother has done it again! He has taught me more about Christianity than I thought I could learn, and this book will do the same for you. You will find no better, more convincing interpretation of these books of the Bible than right here in Jesus Is Risen. This is an exciting and understandable analysis you will savor and appreciate. Don’t doubt me.”

— Rush Limbaugh

“Freedom isn’t possible without freedom in Christ, and to understand this, you need to understand the Bible. David Limbaugh has done readers a wonderful service in this Bible-baed history of the early Christian Church. It is a must-read book for anyone who wants to understand the roots of Christianity and the importance of grace.”

— Dana Loesch

“One of the greatest defenses of faith is history, and in Jesus Is Risen, David Limbaugh reveals the true history of the early church in a way that everyone can understand and be inspired by. Great book!”

— David and Jason Benham

The Great Destroyer

“My friend David Limbaugh has written the best book about the worst president in American history. If anyone reads this book and still votes for Barack Obama, he should have his head examined.”

—Mark Levin

“The Great Destroyer reads like a terrific political thriller about an administration hell-bent on bankrupting its own nation and undermining its national security. The fact that it’s a true story about our own country should disturb and alarm every reader.”

—Vince Flynn, author

Crimes Against Liberty

“Reading David Limbaugh books on the Obama administration is imperative right now. Week in and week out, his devastating columns provide cathartic relief during these dark days for the republic. In his terrific new book Crimes Against Liberty, he has given us a powerful indictment of this administration–its hypocrisy, dishonesty, radicalism, and corruption. Arm yourself with knowledge for the coming showdown: Read this book.”

— Ann Coulter]]

Ideology and strategic arguments from the radical right are produced by hundreds of groups and individuals around the country. However, only a small number actually function as real think tanks, and an even smaller number are influential, even on the extreme right. The four groups profiled below, including one that was just formed last fall, may be the most important. They are also each associated with individuals who became involved in the recent dispute over anti-Semitism on the radical right. Each has said it opposes anti-Semitism, or at least anti-Semitism in its crudest forms (each of them also pushes the work of Kevin MacDonald, an academic who criticizes Jews in somewhat softer terms than most anti-Semites). One of them, the Pioneer Fund, has financially backed the racist research of many individuals associated with the other groups. All four organizations are listed as hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Charles Martel Society/The Occidental Quarterly

Founded in 2001 by Chicago millionaire publishing scion William H. Regnery, the Charles Martel Society puts out The Occidental Quarterly, a journal devoted to the idea that "race informs culture" that is edited by a Who's Who of the radical right. Its chief editor is Kevin Lamb; its managing editor is Louis R. Andrews and its associate editor is Wayne Lutton, who also works at The Social Contract Press, another hate group. The board of the society includes Andrews, Lamb, *American Renaissance* Editor Jared Taylor and Sam Dickson, a white supremacist lawyer and luminary of theCouncil of Conservative Citizens. The Occidental Quarterly publishes an array of extremists including Robert S. Griffin, a University of Vermont professor who has been a member of the neo-Nazi National Alliance, and Marian Kester Coombs, wife of the managing editor ofThe Washington Timesand a well-known racist writer. In 2004, the society went beyond publishing for the first time, holding a black-tie dinner in a fancy Washington, D.C., hotel, where it awarded Kevin MacDonald $10,000 and its Jack London Literary Prize for books describing the alleged "group evolutionary strategies" of the Jews. The Charles Martel Society and its journal have been very well received among so-called "academic racists" in America -- so much so that when Florida race scientist Glayde Whitney died in 2002, his family asked that in lieu of flowers, mourners send donations to the society.

National Policy Institute

After a year of soliciting funds for a "new think tank" in Washington, D.C., the National Policy Institute was established with a staff of four in September 2005 by far-right publisher William Regnery. The institute's mission statement says it aims "to elevate the consciousness of whites, ensure our biological and cultural continuity, and protect our civil rights. The institute ... will study the consequences of the ongoing influx that non-Western populations pose to our national identity." In an August 2005 speech to the Chicagoland Friends of American Renaissance (see group profile below), Regnery warned that "within the first or secondhand memories of people in this room, the white race may go from master of the universe to an anthropological curiosity." The institute has published two studies: a critique of affirmative action, which the institute opposes; and "Mass Deportation is a Viable Solution to America's Illegal Immigration Crisis," written by Edwin Rubenstein. (Rubenstein, a frequent contributor to the V-Dare hate site, is president of ESR Research Economic Consultants of Indianapolis and has served as research director for the conservative Hudson Institute, an adjunct fellow at the Manhattan Institute, an economics editor at the National Review, and a contributing editor at Forbes magazine.) The institute's senior fellow is Wayne Lutton, an extreme-right writer, and its spokesman is Kevin Lamb. Its board includes Louis R. Andrews, American RenaissanceEditor Jared Taylor, and James B. Taylor, who is also on the board of directors of the Reagan Ranch Program. Its advisory committee includes Kevin MacDonald.

William Regnery II, son of Henry Regnery, Sr. and heir to the Regnery Publishing fortune, is one of the founders of the American fascist movement.

White Supremacist

Regnery is a "leading advocate of white supremacy and was a principal player in his father's company which published Swift Boat Vets John E. O'Neill and Jerome R. Corsi's Unfit for Command in a campaign smear against SenatorJohn Kerry.[1]

The Southern Poverty Law Center reported in 2004 that "William Regnery II, an heir to the Regnery publishing fortune who's a prime mover and shaker in white nationalism publishing, is moving into a new line of business: match-making for 'heterosexual whites of Christian cultural heritage.'

"In an appeal to potential investors titled 'Population is Destiny,' the famously reclusive Regnery wrote this March that the Caucasian dating service would be no ordinary money-making opportunity, but a chance to ensure 'the survival of our race,' which 'depends upon our people marrying, reproducing and parenting.'

"Regnery, who says he's long been concerned with a 'tendency to bachelorhood' among white men, told the potential investors that his latest effort to save the white race would not stop with match-making.

"The dating service, he says, will be only the 'first arrow in a business quiver' providing 'services and products to whites.'

"Promoting white nationalism is nothing new for Regnery — or his family. His grandfather, William I, signed incorporation papers for the America First Committee, an organization that opposed fighting Nazi Germany in World War II. His father, Henry, created Regnery Publishing, one of the major purveyors of books by right-wing attack dogs like Ann Coulter and G. Gordon Liddy.

"William II has made his mark as a major fundraiser in radical right circles as the founder of the Charles Martel Society in 2001. The society publishes The Occidental Quarterly, an academic-looking journal filled with articles by white-supremacist luminaries such as Samuel Francis, editor for the white supremacist Council of Conservative Citizens and Wayne Lutton of the hate group The Social Contract Press.

"The society is putting together conferences, summer schools and a speaker's bureau — all designed to push Regnery's view that the white race is veering toward extinction."

In the August 24, 2004, Bill Berkowitz article "White supremacist love connection" published in Working for Change, Berkowitz wrote:

"So, if you're having trouble making a love connection and you're uncomfortable at KKK rallies, haven't made your way to a Council of Conservative Citizens confab, or aren't interested in re-locating to a compound in Idaho, William Regnery's new whites-only dating service might be right up your alley. Regnery, one of the lesser-known members of the right wing publishing family, [was then] searching for seed money to launch a service that promises to hook clients up with their very own special white supremacist love connection."

Regnery's The Occidental Quarterly was described by Newsweek as "espous[ing] white nationalism" and "whose statement of principles calls for limiting immigration to 'selected people of European ancestry.'"

"In a letter to subscribers, Regnery expressed his concern about the decreasing percentage of white people in the population and announced plans for a new dating service that he claims will address the problem. Internet-based and earmarked only for whites, Regnery's service aims to increase the white population in the United States through marriage and procreation."

fun rational wiki

Regnery Publishing is a publishing house based in Washington DC that is the (self-proclaimed) "nation’s preeminent conservative publisher." They "publish[...] books that are contrary to those of “mainstream” publishers in New York" by such conservative luminaries as "Dinesh D'Souza, Armstrong Williams, Oliver North, Mark Steyn, and Steve Forbes."[1] One wonders why they left out Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin, Ted Nugent, and Peter Duesberg (yes, really).

Regnery was founded in the 1940s by Henry Regnery, who started his publishing career distributing the conservative newsletter Human Events. While they got involved in extreme wingnuttery by printing Bircherbooks, they also published a few works by socialists and Sybil, the famous book on split-personality (now dissociative) disorder. They helped launch William F. Buckley's career by publishing his first two books.

Currently, Regnery seems to be a clearinghouse for the bullshit no other publisher would ever touch. Some of their greatest hits include:

Along with these, they offer a variety of books on fundamentalism, creationism, and Biblical pseudoarchaeology. A number of books by Newt Gingrich and Mark Skousen, the nephew of W. Cleon Skousen, are available. There is also some rather uncharacteristic woo as well, including a bunch of books on food woo, diet woo, and general quackery. And for some reason, you can still order books on Y2K.

[edit]Politically Incorrect Guides

Regnery publishes a series of books called the Politically Incorrect Guides or P.I.Gs, which are largely written to resemble the successful ...for Dummies series from Wiley and Complete Idiot's Guide from Alpha Books. Written as they are primarily by right-wing hacks such as Tom Bethell and Jonathan Wells, it is generally agreed outside the wingnut world that they are both political (being heavily biased towards dogmatic conservatism) and incorrect (both scientifically and historically). The evolution blog Panda's Thumb initiated a series meant to be a point-by-point fisking of the PIG to Intelligent Design by noted ID advocate and would-be scientist Jonathan Wells; due to the sheer volume of stupid in that one book alone, the series never quite finished.[3]

Earlier editions ran with the tagline "Liberals have hijacked [insert topic here] for long enough. Now it's our turn." That last sentence was later changed to "It's time to set the record straight."

Educators may wish to get copies of the appropriate P.I.Gs to prepare themselves for misinformed students who have been indoctrinated with these books. (Yes, they are popular with parents in the home schoolingmovement.) At least one book from the list below is actively recommended to Christian school and college students who want to argue back against atheist teachers. [4]

According to Regnery's website, the following Politically Incorrect Guides are available:

Right-wing attack dog Regnery Publishing has announced plans to launch a children's imprint.

Regnery's stable of writers for its adult division includes such deep thinkers as Ann Coulter, Mark Levin and Rush Limbaugh's baby brother David. They are the publisher behind conspiracy theorist Jerome Corsi's slanderous and thoroughly debunked Swiftboat attack on presidential candidate John Kerry, as well as Corsi's laughable Where's the Birth Certificate? attack on Barack Obama.

They have published books by William "abort every black baby and your crime rate would go down," Bennett and Patrick "Hitler was an individual of great courage" Buchanan. They've published National Rifle Association gun nut Wayne LaPierre and Watergate burglar G. Gordon Liddy.  They've published Michelle "In Defense of Internment" Malkin, J. D. "You could marry your horse" Hayworth and George "Macaca" Allen.

Now they're coming after the children. Is it too soon to get a restraining order? (More beyond the squiggle....)

The imprint is to be called "Little Patriots," and is aimed at children aged 5 to 8. Their decision is motivated in great part by the success of their recent children's book *Sweet Land of Liberty*, written by Newt Gingrich's mistress wife Callista. You know that book? It's the one where a quintessentially American animal, the flag-waving elephant, recounts such moments in U.S. history as when the Pilgrims survived a harsh winter thanks solely to the help of God....

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Regnery Publishing in Washington, D.C. is a publisher which specializes in conservative books characterized on their website as "contrary to those of 'mainstream' publishers in New York."[^^1]^(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regnery_Publishing#cite_note-0) Since 1993, Regnery Publishing has been a division of Eagle Publishing, which also owns the weekly magazine *Human Events*. Regnery is currently led by President Marjory Ross, who had previously served as Vice President under President Al Regnery, son of the company's founder, until 1997.

Regnery has published books by authors such as former Republican Party Chairman Haley Barbour, Ann Coulter, former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Newt Gingrich, Columnist Michelle Malkin and Barbara Olson.

[edit] History

Regnery Publishing is the second publishing company founded by Henry Regnery. The first Henry Regnery Company was founded in Chicago in 1947 and sold in 1977. Henry Regnery then founded Regnery Publishing Inc. as a separate company.[^^2]^(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regnery_Publishing#cite_note-nytobit-1)

[edit] Henry Regnery Company, 1947-1977

After helping to found Human Events as a weekly newsletter, Henry Regnery began publishing monthly pamphlets and books. A German-American, Regnery had studied in Germany for two years and, while not sympathetic to Nazism, was always very sympathetic to Germans. Some of the first pamphlets he published, including a reprint of a speech by University of Chicago President Robert M. Hutchins, criticized the harsh treatment of Germans and Japanese both in popular attitudes and in postwar administration of the former Axis countries.[^^3]^(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regnery_Publishing#cite_note-hr-2)

Regnery published the pamphlets and some books under the name of Human Events. He began publishing under his own name in September 1947. The first book published by Henry Regnery Publishers was by socialist Victor Gollancz who ran the Left Book Club in Britain. A man of Jewish heritage, Gollancz was appalled at the bombing of German civilians late in the war and by the treatment of the country afterward. Gollancz published In Darkest Germany in Britain but was unable to find an American publisher for his unpopular ideas. He approached Regnery, who agreed to publish it. Regnery subsequently published the U.S. edition of Our Threatened Values by Gollancz.[^^3]^(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regnery_Publishing#cite_note-hr-2)

Regnery's third book was The Hitler in Our Selves, by Max Picard. Other early books included The German Opposition to Hitler by Hans Rothfels and The High Cost of Vengeance (1949) by Freda Utley which was critical of the Allies' air campaign and post-war occupation. Utley's book was the first Regnery book to be reviewed in *The New York Times*, where it was excoriated. Reinhold Niebuhr gave it a positive review in *The Nation* magazine.[^^3]^(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regnery_Publishing#cite_note-hr-2) But not all of Regnery's output during the period was so "highbrow," as one of the company's better sellers in 1975 was *SuperJock: The loud, frantic, nonstop world of a rock radio DJ* by popular WCFL disc jockey Larry Lujack.

The company was founded as a nonprofit corporation. Regnery later wrote that it was initially organized that way, "not because I had any ideological objection to profits, but because, as it seemed to me then, and does still, in matters of excellence the market is a poor judge. The books that are most needed are often precisely those that will have only a modest sale." The Internal Revenue Service forced the company to be reorganized as a for-profit concern on March 1, 1948. Regnery hired his first few employees that year.[^^3]^(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regnery_Publishing#cite_note-hr-2)

[edit] Conservative and anti-Communist books

Regnery published some of the first and most important books of the postwar American conservative movement. "[I]t was a measure of the grip that liberal-minded editors had on American publishing at the time that Regnery, which was founded in 1947, was one of only two houses known to be sympathetic to conservative authors", according to Henry Regnery's 1996 obituary in *The New York Times*.

In 1951, Regnery published *God and Man at Yale*, the first book written by William F. Buckley, Jr.. At that time, Regnery had a close affiliation with the University of Chicago and published classics for the Great Books series at the University, but he lost the contract as a result of publishing Buckley's book.[^^2]^(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regnery_Publishing#cite_note-nytobit-1)

In 1953, Regnery published *The Conservative Mind*, a seminal book for Post World War II American conservatism, as well as books by Albert J. Nock, James J. Kilpatrick, James Burnham and Whittaker Chambers. He also published paperback editions of literary works by authors such as novelist Wyndham Lewis and the poets T. S. Eliot and Ezra Pound.[^^2]^(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regnery_Publishing#cite_note-nytobit-1)

In 1954, Regnery published McCarthy and His Enemies by William F. Buckley and L. Brent Bozell Jr. "Although Mr. Buckley [...] had criticized the senator for 'gross exaggerations', Mr. McCarthy said he would not dispute the merits of the book with the authors", according to a news article in *The New York Times*. While criticizing McCarthy, the book was sympathetic to him (and in fact was harsher on McCarthy's critics than it was on the senator for making false allegations[^^4]^(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regnery_Publishing#cite_note-3)), and McCarthy attended a reception for the authors.[^^5]^(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regnery_Publishing#cite_note-4)

In the early 1950s, Regnery published two books by Robert Welch, who went on to found the John Birch Society in 1958. In May God Forgive Us, Welch criticized influential foreign-policy analysts and policymakers and accused many of working to further Communism as part of a conspiracy.[^^6]^(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regnery_Publishing#cite_note-5) In 1954, Regnery published Welch's biography of John Birch, an American Baptist missionary in China who was killed by Chinese Communists after he became a U.S. intelligence officer in World War II.

[edit] Other works

Regnery was the first publisher of the psychological biography *Sybil*, which was reprinted numerous times by larger publishers, and eventually made into a film.[^^7]^(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regnery_Publishing#cite_note-6)

[edit] Regnery Publishing Inc.

In the 1980s, Alfred S. Regnery, son of Henry Regnery, took control of the company. In the 1990s, the Regnery family sold the publishing company to Phillips Publishing International, which put the book publishing company into its Eagle Publishing subsidiary, which also publishes the weekly Human Events.[^^8]^(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regnery_Publishing#cite_note-7)[^(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regnery_Publishing#cite_note-8)9]^(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regnery_Publishing#cite_note-8) Alfred Regnery has subsequently left his post as President of Regnery Publishing to become the publisher of The American Spectator magazine.[^^10]^(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regnery_Publishing#cite_note-9) His books are now published by Threshold Editions, the conservative imprint of CBS-owned Simon & Schuster which is run by Republican strategist Mary Matalin.[^^11]^(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regnery_Publishing#cite_note-10) He still holds a seat on the Regnery Board of Directors. Pat Sajak also is a member of the board. Alex Novak, son of political columnist Robert Novak, is director of marketing.

[edit] Controversy and criticism

[edit] Book subjects

Regnery has become noteworthy, apart from authors of its books, because of its penchant for political controversy with a high profile on the national stage. It recently launched a series of books titled "The Politically Incorrect Guide to" (multiple subjects), confronting what it conceives to be the assumptions of the nation's elites, sometimes negatively described as political correctness. The Politically Incorrect Guides have often been referred to by their backronym PIGS by supporters and opponents alike (Regnery's logo for the series features a pig's head). Former Regnery officials have described its marketing strategy as getting its conservative books condemned by the New York Times, generating very large sales to conservatives as a result. [citation needed]

Regnery books have often been the subject of controversy: *The Secret Life of Bill Clinton: The Unreported Stories* (1997) was criticized by British journalist Ambrose Evans-Pritchard, who said it "manages to connect the president to everything from 1995]s Oklahoma City bombing to Arkansas's drug underworld to the mysterious death of White House aide and longtime Clinton friend Vince Foster, and, of course, to Paula Jones."[^^12]^(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regnery_Publishing#cite_note-11) Regnery also published Unlimited Access: An FBI Agent Inside The Clinton White House (1996) by Gary Aldrich, which Max Blumenthal, writing in The American Prospect, claimed "... painted images of Hillary Clinton hanging crack pipes on the White House Christmas tree".[2] Aldrich had written about an incident where Ms. Clinton ordered a batch of student artwork hung on the tree without examining it for suitability.[3]

In June 2004, Regnery agreed to publish Unfit for Command by former Swift Boat Veteran John O'Neill and veteran author Dr. Jerome Corsi. Television advertisements about Presidential candidate John Kerry's criticisms of U.S. soldiers and recounting of his own military record in Vietnam were unveiled nationwide at about the same time as Unfit for Command was released, creating shortages of the book in bookstores nationwide. [citation needed] The book exceeded 1 million copies in print.

The Kerry campaign demanded that Regnery cease publication and distribution of Unfit for Command, saying there were inaccuracies in the book about Kerry's war record and anti-war activities at home. Regnery responded by offering to print and distribute a reply book by Kerry, suggesting "Winter Soldier" on the same subject matter that Kerry authored in the 1970s.[citation needed]

In describing Regnery's position in the publishing world, Nicholas Confessore, then writer for the liberal *American Prospect*, said the following:

Welcome to the world of Regnery Publishing—lifestyle press for conservatives, preferred printer of presidential hopefuls, and venerable publisher of books for the culture wars. Call it—gracelessly but more accurately—a medium-sized, loosely linked network of conservative types, with few degrees of separation and similar political aims. Just don't call it a conspiracy.[^^13]^(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regnery_Publishing#cite_note-12)

Carl Ernst, an academic scholar of Islamic studies, said Regnery Publishing is 'promoted and supported by right-wing organizations, who are perpetuating a type of bigotry similar to anti-Semitism and racial prejudice.' As an example, Ernst notes that Robert Spencer, whom Ernst views as an Islamophobe, publishes some of his books through Regnery.[^^14]^(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regnery_Publishing#cite_note-Ernst-13)

fake rape story?

In office Regnery devoted himself to issues that had little to do with juvenile justice. He was criticized by Republicans and Democrats alike for awarding a $186,710 grant to a dean at Jerry Falwell's Liberty College for the purpose of designing a high-school course on the Constitution. He drew even more bipartisan criticism when he awarded $789,000 to Judith Reisman, a former songwriter for the "Captain Kangaroo" show, to do a study of the cartoons in Penthouse, Playboy, and Hustler.

Reisman had been recommended to Regnery by his chief deputy, James Wooton, who was impressed by Reisman's allegations that Dr. Alfred Kinsey, the renowned pioneer sex researcher of the 1940s, had gotten all of his data on child sexuality from "a 63-year-old man who had sex with over 800 children." Wooton arranged for Reisman to meet Regnery. This meeting led to Reisman's getting the grant.

Resiman later stated in a memo found in Regnery's files that she had been given the money in part "to conclude research on the Kinsey data on child sexuality." Regnery now denies this. "As far as I know," Regnery told me, "I don’t' think any of our money is going for that Kinsey stuff." Reisman did not return my phone calls.

The most extraordinary example of Regnery's practice of doling out grants for political purposes was a $4.25 million grant given in January 1984 to set up a National School Safety Center at Pepperdine University in California. The grant recipient was a close friend and political associate of Meese named George Nicholson, who had lost a bid to become attorney general of California in November 1982.

The fact that Nicholson, who had no previous affiliation with Pepperdine, received a noncompetitive grant just two months after losing the election attracted some attention on Capitol Hill. But Regnery assured a House subcommittee in April 1984 that there was nothing irregular about the grant. He repeatedly said that the administration had selected Pepperdine to sponsor the center, and that Pepperdine had in turn selected Nicholson. Both Regnery and Nicholson denied that Nicholson's friendship with Meese was instrumental in the awarding of the grant.

Yet memos in Regnery's own files show that he misled Congress. The administration privately agreed to give Nicholson the $4.2 million well before Pepperdine was involved. And they gave him the grant as part of a larger public relations effort by the White House to protect the president on a sensitive issue.

The issue was education. In late 1983 White House pollster Richard Wirthlin found that the American people disapproved of the administration's massive cuts in federal education spending by a margin of two to one. White House deputy counsel Michael Deaver was called on to mount a public relations campaign. If the administration wasn't going to change its policies, it could change the public's perceptions.

At the time Regnery was working with Gary Bauer, assistant secretary of education, on a report titled "Chaos in the Public Schools," an exaggerated portrait of mayhem in the classroom. For example, Regnery and Bauer asserted that there had been 2,400 cases of arson in public schools in the previous year. They neglected to mention, though, that the figure came from a National Institute of Education study that found the arson incidents cost an average of 39 cents each. In general, the report vastly overstated the problem of school violence. Democratic representative Pat Williams, who chairs the House Select Subcommittee on Education, pointed out that "students are between four to eight times safer, depending on which major crime you are talking about, in schools than they are in their own homes."

Conservative Action Project

What Happens When The Right Buys Its Own Lies

Submitted by Kyle on July 1, 2010 - 1:19pm

Since the establishment conservative movement never stops trying to co-opt the Tea Party mantle for itself, I guess that means I have to keep covering their efforts as well.

I've written about the Conservative Action Project before, noting that it is one of the many right-wing coalitions that exist to establish the party line of the issue of the day, often though "Memo for the Movement" statements that it releases. These memos tend to be mostly meaningless collections of bullet points and links, but apparently members of the coalition feel they serve some purpose, which is why they keep issuing them.

The latest memo carries the names of a wide variety of right-wing leaders - including Ed Meese, Wendy Wright, Grover Norquist, Gary Bauer, Mat Staver, Curt Levey, Andrea Lafferty, and Louis Sheldon - who have joined together to commend the Tea Party Movement for its "fidelity to the Constitution."

And after the memo's standard pointless bullet points, this paragraph appears:

Earlier this year, many Tea Party Movement leaders and conservative leaders found common ground at a meeting and ceremony at the Collingwood Library & Museum in Alexandria, VA-- part of the original Mount Vernon Estate owned by President George Washington. The Mount Vernon Statement, issued on February 17, 2010, restates the ideas of the American founding as articulated in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. It was signed by over 100 leaders-including Tea Party Movement leaders--representing tens of millions of conservative activists nationwide and re-enforced the principles of Constitutional Conservatism for the 21st Century.

Do you remember the Mount Vernon Statement?  It was the attempt earlier this year by these very same activists to co-opt the Tea Party movement by merging it with the establishment conservative movement.

But it was all for naught, as a short time later the Tea Party movement released its own "Contract From America" manifesto which explicitly excluded any and all social issues.

The Tea Party movement's consistent refusal to adopt the Religious Right's agenda as part of the Tea Party agenda has infuriated establishment conservatives to no end, which is why they have continuously worked to co-opt the movement for their own ends ... leading to situations like this where the conservative establishment drafts and signs a document proclaiming its own agenda while unilaterally claiming that it represents the Tea Party movement - and then later, using that same document as an excuse to commend itself for its "fidelity to the Constitution."

Conservative Action Project: A New Name For the Same Old Right-Wing Agenda

Submitted by Kyle on February 1, 2010 - 11:13am

Several months ago, I wrote a post noting the emergence of the new right-wing coalition calling itself that Conservative Action Project. At the time, all that I could figure out about it was that its membership included several Religious Right leaders and it seemed to operate out of the Council for National Policy.

Today, the Washington Post examines the role that new media is playing in shaping and disseminating conservative messaging throughout the right-wing echo chamber and reports that the Conservative Action Project is playing a a key role in that effort through the weekly meetings hosted by the Family Research Council:

Inside the Beltway, much of it is fueled by the Conservative Action Project (CAP), a new group of conservative leaders chaired by Reagan-era attorney general Edwin Meese III. CAP, whose influential memos "for the movement" circulate on Capitol Hill, is an offshoot of the Council for National Policy, a highly secretive organization of conservative leaders and donors.

...

At 7:30 a.m., members of the Conservative Action Project gather at the Family Research Council, a social conservative group.

CAP grew out of a series of meetings of conservatives, determined to engineer a political comeback, in the weeks after Obama's election. One took place during a Council for National Policy meeting at a D.C. hotel, conservatives said. The secretive council was formed in the early 1980s to coordinate what was then called the "New Right."

Key players in CAP, members said, include Republican pollster Kellyanne Conway; Greg Mueller, president of CRC Public Relations; and former congressman David M. McIntosh (R-Ind.). Its only paid staff member is Patrick Pizzella, an official in the George W. Bush administration, who works out of the Council for National Policy offices.

Among CAP's projects was supporting the Health Care Freedom Coalition, whose more than 50 economic and social conservative groups quietly built health-care opposition, CAP members said. The coalition is a spinoff of FreedomWorks, the D.C.-based group that works extensively with tea-party activists.

CAP also worked unsuccessfully to defeat David F. Hamilton, Obama's first appellate judicial nominee. A Nov. 9 CAP memo calling Hamilton "an ideologue first and a jurist second" helped trigger blog blasts from Erickson and an anti-Hamilton speech at the conservative Federalist Society by Sen. Jeff Sessions (Ala.), the ranking Judiciary Committee Republican.
