Rep. Eli Crane (R-Ariz.) questioned Dr. Elizabeth Ginexi, former Scientific Program Official for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), on the lack of transparency the agency showed in explaining the origin of COVID-19 and how its role has contributed to Americans’ distrust in the federal government. He also questioned the relevancy of her presence at a hearing meant to examine MKULTRA.

President Donald Trump's administration is being sharply criticized by conservatives in both government and media for reportedly sending tens of millions of dollars to the Taliban-controlled government in Afghanistan.
Newsweek reported Tuesday that, according to Amrullah Saleh, (who leads the anti-Taliban political party Afghanistan Green Trend) the Trump administrationflew $45 million in cash to Afghanistan on Monday. Saleh's group alleged that the money was "flown in via a chartered flight by Moalem Airlines," which is based in Kyrgyzstan.
The post caught the attention of conservative commentator Ann Vandersteel, who said of the cash payment "this is not America First" but rather "America deceived." Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.), who is a member of the far-right House Freedom Caucus, responded to Vandersteel's post by adding that the massive cash shipments to the Taliban are happening "every week." He then called on the U.S. Senate to "pass my bill."
Burchett's legislation — the "No Tax Dollars for Terrorists Act" — passed the House of Representatives in June, and would empower the U.S. State Department to identify and publish the names of every organization providing financial support to the Taliban-controlled government.
"The United States has sent over $5 billion in cash to Kabul. It is the duty of the State Department to ensure that any aid from the United States is kept out of the hands of terrorists in Afghanistan. The terrorists can hate us for free," Burchett stated after the bill was passed.
Burchett has been a vocal proponent of cutting off U.S. cash shipments to Afghanistan ever since U.S. troops withdrew from the war-torn country in 2021. The issue has also attracted interest from MAGA influencers in close proximity to Trump, like unofficial "loyalty enforcer" Laura Loomer.
"Why is the United States still funding the Taliban?" Loomer wrote on Tuesday. "What the hell do our reps do all day aside from ruin our country and the world?"
"Because we are crooked Laura," Burchett responded.

Timothy Floyd Burchett (/ˈbɜːrtʃɪt/ BUR-chit;[3] born August 25, 1964) is an American politician who is the U.S. representative for Tennessee's 2nd congressional district, based in Knoxville, serving since 2019.
A Republican, Burchett was formerly mayor of Knox County, Tennessee. He served in the Tennessee General Assembly, first in the Tennessee House of Representatives, in which he represented Tennessee's 18th district.[4] He later served in the Tennessee State Senate, representing the 7th district, part of Knox County.
Burchett is a part of the new House subcommittee overseeing President Trump's Department of Government Efficiency.[5] He has expressed interest in running for Governor of Tennessee in 2026.[6]
Early life and education
Burchett is a native of Knoxville, Tennessee, where he was born in 1964. He attended West Hills Elementary School, Bearden Junior High School, and Bearden High School.[7][8] After graduating from Bearden High School in 1982, he enrolled in the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in education in 1988.[7][8][9] He is a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.
Tennessee General Assembly
Burchett's first election to public office was in 1994, when he won a seat in the Tennessee House of Representatives. He served in the House for two two-year terms, from 1995 to 1998.[10][11] In 1998, he won a four-year term in the Tennessee State Senate, representing the 7th district. He succeeded Clyde Coulter "Bud" Gilbert.[12] He was reelected twice, serving a total of three four-year terms, from 1999 to 2010.[7][8]
In 2006, while a state senator, Burchett failed to report six political action committee checks totaling $3,300. The Registry of Election Finance did not fine him.[13] In 2008, while still a state senator, he was fined $250 for failing to disclose three PAC contributions that totaled $1,500.[13]
In 1999, Burchett received national media attention for sponsoring a bill to legalize the eating of roadkill, wild animals killed by vehicles, before notifying the county game warden.[14][15] He defended the proposal as a "common-sense thing" intended to prevent edible meat from being wasted. Eating roadkill was already legal – as it is in most places – but required prior notification of the county game warden. Burchett's bill allowed processing and consumption of roadkill before notifying the warden. Burchett proposed the bill after being contacted by a constituent who had been penalized for giving a needy family the meat from a deer his vehicle had accidentally hit.[15]
Proposal of salvia ban
See also: Legal status of Salvia divinorum
Burchett sponsored a bill in 2006 to make illegal "possessing, producing, manufacturing, distributing, or possessing with intent to produce, manufacture, or distribute the active chemical ingredient in the hallucinogenic plant Salvia divinorum in the state of Tennessee."[16] He said, "We have enough problems with illegal drugs as it is without people promoting getting high from some glorified weed that's been brought up from Mexico. The only people I’ve heard from who are opposed to making it illegal are those who are getting stoned on it."[17] The bill was signed into law on May 19, 2006, and went into effect on July 1, 2006.[16] Burchett originally wanted to make violations a felony offense, but the bill was amended during its passage to make it a Class A misdemeanor.[18]
In a news report published shortly before the signing of the bill by Governor Phil Bredesen, Burchett was quoted as saying, "it's not that popular but I'm one of those who believes in closing the barn door before the cows get out.... in certain hands, it could be very dangerous, even lethal."[19] A store owner who had stopped selling the herb due to Burchett's bill said that he saw little point in banning salvia, "I have no idea why it's being outlawed. It's a sage. People in South America have been using it for years and years." The same report also gave the general counterargument of salvia proponents that legislation banning Salvia divinorum reflects a cultural bias, as there are fewer prohibitions on more addictive substances such as alcohol and nicotine, and questioned how effective the bill will be, pointing out that Salvia divinorum has no odor and is easy to grow, so enforcement will be difficult.[19]
Knox County mayor

Burchett became Knox County mayor in September 2010, succeeding Mike Ragsdale, who left office due to term limits. Burchett defeated former Knox County Sheriff Tim Hutchison in the Republican primary and Democratic nominee Ezra Maize in the general election.[20][21]
On February 10, 2012, Burchett appeared on WBIR-TV and officially announced that the county's first "cash mob" would be held at the Emery's 5 & 10 store in South Knoxville.[22] The cash mob gained national attention,[23] and was mentioned in *Time* magazine.[24]
In 2012, Tennessee's Registry of Election Finance unanimously decided to take no action against Burchett regarding an inquiry into his campaign disclosure forms.[25]

When 30-year incumbent Jimmy Duncan announced his retirement in July 2017, Burchett entered a crowded seven-way Republican primary to succeed him. He defeated his nearest challenger, state representative Jimmy Matlock, by just under 12 percentage points. He faced Democratic nominee Renee Hoyos in the November general election. The 2nd has long been a Republican stronghold. With a Cook Partisan Voting Index of R+20, it is one of the nation's most Republican districts, and tied for the third-most Republican district in Tennessee. It is one of the few ancestrally Republican districts in the South; the GOP and its predecessors have held it without interruption since 1859. For this reason, the Republican primary has long been reckoned as the real contest in this district. Democrats have not made a substantive bid for the seat since 1964, and have received as much as 40% of the vote only twice since then.
As expected, Burchett won the general election in a rout, taking 65.9% of the vote to Hoyos's 33.1%.[26] When he took office in January 2019, Burchett became only the seventh person (not counting caretakers) to represent the 2nd since 1909. This district gives its representatives very long tenures in Washington; all six of Burchett's predecessors held the seat for at least 10 years, with three of them serving at least 20 years. He also ended a 54-year hold on the district by the Duncan family. John Duncan Sr. won the seat in 1964, and was succeeded upon his death in 1988 by his son, Jimmy.
In February 2018 the Knoxville News Sentinel reported that Burchett had failed to report a $10,000 payment from a solar electric company on his campaign finance forms and various financial disclosure forms. The story reported that two months earlier the FBI had questioned people about Burchett committing income tax evasion.[27] After the story broke, Burchett gave a statement to WBIR that he was correcting errors in his campaign financial disclosures and income tax forms, describing his failure to report all income as an "oversight".[28]

Burchett was reelected in 2020 with 67.6% of the vote, defeating Democrat Renee Hoyos.[29]

Agriculture
In March 2024, Burchett was one of 10 House Republicans who signed a letter to the House Agriculture Committee opposing the inclusion of the Ending Agriculture Trade Suppression (EATS) Act in the 2024 farm bill.[30] The EATS Act would have invalidated state and local laws regulating agricultural goods sold in interstate commerce, including farm animal welfare laws like California's Proposition 12. The letter argued that the legislation would undermine states' rights and cede control over U.S. agricultural policy to the Chinese-owned pork producer WH Group and its subsidiary Smithfield Foods.[31]
Texas v. Pennsylvania
In December 2020, Burchett was one of 126 Republican members of the House of Representatives to sign an amicus brief in support of Texas v. Pennsylvania, a lawsuit filed at the United States Supreme Court contesting the results of the 2020 presidential election, in which Joe Biden defeated incumbent Donald Trump.[32] The Supreme Court declined to hear the case on the basis that Texas lacked standing under Article III of the Constitution to challenge the results of an election held by another state.[33][34][35]
Iraq
In June 2021, Burchett was one of 49 House Republicans to vote to repeal the AUMF against Iraq.[36][37]
Immigration
Burchett voted against the Further Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2020 which authorizes DHS to nearly double the available H-2B visas for the remainder of FY 2020.[38][39]
Burchett voted against the Consolidated Appropriations Act (H.R. 1158),[40] which effectively prohibits Immigration and Customs Enforcement from cooperating with the Department of Health and Human Services to detain or remove illegal alien sponsors of Unaccompanied Alien Children.[citation ^needed]
2023 U.S. House Speaker election
During the 118th Congressional Speakership Election, Representative Matt Gaetz and a handful of other representatives were holdouts in voting for Rep. Kevin McCarthy for Speakership. Burchett voted for McCarthy on every ballot. While people claimed that after Burchett walked over and whispered into Gaetz's ear, Gaetz and others abstained, giving a majority to McCarthy for Speaker, Gaetz had in fact begun abstaining before this conversation.[41]
Israel
Burchett voted to provide Israel with support following 2023 Hamas attack on Israel.[42][43]
UFOs
Following a report published by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence on January 12, 2023, Burchett expressed his views about an alleged government coverup of the nature of UFOs, saying, "we've been covering this up since the '40s" and that he doesn't "trust [the] government, [and] there's an arrogance about it, and I think the American public can handle it."[44]
On March 7, 2023, Burchett expanded on these claims, saying that UFO technology is possibly "being reverse-engineered right now" but we "don't understand" how it functions. He maintains that the U.S. has "recovered a craft at some point, and possible beings".[45] In January 2025 Burchett claimed that aliens have secret underwater bases.[46]
Syria
In 2023, Burchett was among 47 Republicans to vote for House Concurrent Resolution 21, that directed President Joe Biden to remove U.S. troops from Syria within 180 days. Texas Republican Michael McCaul, chair of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs disagreed, saying the U.S. participated in operations in 2022 with partners that killed 466 Islamic State operatives, detaining 250 more, contending that if the U.S. withdrew troops, it could result in an ISIS resurgence.[47][48]
Tennessee school shooting response
On March 28, 2023, Burchett responded to the Covenant School shooting, where three nine-year-old students and three staff members were killed in Nashville, by telling reporters: "It's a horrible, horrible situation, and we're not going to fix it. Criminals are gonna be criminals. And my daddy fought in the second world war, fought in the Pacific, fought the Japanese, and he told me, he said, 'Buddy,' he said, 'if somebody wants to take you out, and doesn't mind losing their life, there's not a whole heck of a lot you can do about it.'" Burchett also said he sees no "real role" for Congress in reducing gun violence, other than to "mess things up".[49]
2024 Kansas City parade shooting response
After a local D.J. was killed and 22 others were wounded in the 2024 Kansas City parade shooting, Burchett inaccurately identified an adult attendee of the Kansas City rally, Denton Loudermill, Jr., as the shooter, claiming he was an "illegal alien". Burchett's social media post received 1.4 million views.[50][51] In March 2024, the falsely identified man sued Burchett for $75,000 in damages.[52] The lawsuit, which Loudermill had filed in a Kansas court, was dismissed in September 2024 due to lack of jurisdiction, considering the case had "nothing really to do with Kansas."[53]
Debt ceiling
In April 2023, Burchett was one of only four Republican representatives who voted against the proposed Limit, Save, Grow Act, which raised the debt ceiling while at the same time providing for cuts to non-mandatory spending,[54] claiming he could not support any debt limit raise which did not provide fully balanced budget.
In June of the same year, Burchett was among the 71 Republicans who voted against final passage of the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023 in the House.[55]
Removal of Speaker McCarthy
On October 3, 2023, Burchett was one of eight Republicans who voted to remove Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House.[56] He said his yes vote was "sealed" after McCarthy allegedly made a "condescending" remark about his religious beliefs during a phone call. McCarthy said that he did not intend to upset Burchett.[57]
George Soros
In October 2024, Burchett told a Fox News radio station that George Soros is "a money changer of the worst kind" who "will destroy this country."[58] The term money changer has been associated with antisemitic stereotypes.[59] Burchett denied that his criticism of Soros, who is Jewish, was antisemitic, saying that "my voting record clearly reflects my support for Israel and the Jewish people.”[60]
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Despite their highly contrasting positions on most issues, Burchett maintains a friendship with progressive Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, whom he met during freshmen orientation as a new representative in 2019 at the beginning of the 116th United States Congress.[61]

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is struggling to corral rogue members of the House Republican Conference during this week's Congressional recess to support his budget resolution. But his chances of success appear to be dwindling by the day.
That's according to a Tuesday article in Politico, which reported that there are at least a dozen House Republicans on the fence about the budget bill for various philosophical reasons. And because the House Republican majority is so slim, Johnson can only afford to lose one vote if he hopes to get the bill to the Senate without any Democratic votes.
Among those opposed, seven of them are specifically worried about the bill's proposal to cut billions of dollars in support for state Medicaid programs. Even though Johnson aims to sell the bill as Republicans' opportunity to help pass Trump's legislative agenda, one Republican anonymously told Politico that they were concerned the bill would actually "undermine the basic care provided by Medicaid," and pointed to Trump's promises to not touch the program that provides health insurance for low-income residents.
READ MORE:'No more of the nonsense': GOP reps hint at 'consequences' if Johnson crosses 'red lines'
The speaker's resolution would cut roughly $2 trillion in federal spending across all agencies, though some hardline Republicans like Reps. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) and Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) have said the proposed cuts aren't steep enough. And other members of the conference are opposed to a provision in the legislation that would raise the debt ceiling.

During his years in the U.S. Senate, now-Secretary of State Marco Rubio was a strong supporter of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) — which he viewed as a valuable asset from a foreign policy standpoint. Rubio and Senate Democrats had plenty of disagreements, but they agreed that foreign aid via USAID did a lot to advance the United States' interests abroad.
But now, USAID is a major target of the Trump Administration and the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Experiencing mass layoffs, USAID is being gutted by MAGA Republicans. Axios reported that 92 percent of foreign assistance grants were being "axed."
According to NOTUS reporter Haley Byrd Wilt, spending Rubio approved as secretary of state was blocked by DOGE staffers. And some GOP lawmakers are crying foul.
READ MORE:'Putting on a blindfold and smashing everything': New Trump order draws fire from critics
Wilt, in an article published on February 27, reports, "Republicans love Elon Musk's plans to slash government spending, but they're not quite as thrilled at how a set of unelected bureaucrats is carrying it out — or how those new staffers are defying Senate-confirmed Cabinet secretaries in the process.
When Secretary of State Marco Rubio approved foreign aid programs he deemed critical to American interests, two Department of Government Efficiency employees canceled the spending instead. The Washington Post reported that those DOGE employees have access to the payment system and manually blocked the funding, including money for Ukraine and HIV treatment programs — prompting pushback from Republicans on Capitol Hill."
One of the GOP lawmakers who is speaking out is Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tennessee).
Burchett told NOTUS, "I have problems with that. I have problems that they have access to that. If it was a mistake, I get it. But if it wasn't, they need to be fired."
Sen. Thom Tillis (R-North Carolina) isn't happy either.

The conservative senator told NOTUS that when it comes to the U.S. State Department, "I consider Marco Rubio to be the head chef." And Tillis described the DOGE block on funding Rubio approved as "a natural consequence of a lot of cooks in the kitchen."
Tillis argued, "Now that Marco is confirmed and in place, there should be nobody in the (Trump) Administration — outside of the president of the United States or at the direction of the president — that should pause, delay or cancel anything Marco thinks is in our best national interest."

DOGE and Elon Musk, who may or may not be leading the arm of the White House, has drawn concern for trying to access Americans’ personal data at the IRS. Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.), who is on the DOGE subcommittee, and CNN’s Pamela Brown had a heated discussion about his role cutting the federal government Tuesday morning. During this conversation Burchett compared young staffers at DOGE to World War II soldiers.
“Congress better get some guts and start backing [DOGE] up, or the next president could undo everything that's done. And that is really my biggest fear. I don't care what title you give Elon Musk,” Burchett said.
The conversation continued.

“You’re proving my point. All these people are there. This is a very porous agency,”
“There's a difference between civil service and checks and balances, in place of a small group and politicals who are going in, many of them young staffers who we know nothing about, really.”
Burchett compared the young staffers at DOGE to U.S. soldiers.
“Those are Japanese rifles,” he said, referring to rifles on his wall. “Guess what? My dad was 20, 21, years old when he killed the people that carried that you all don't question the fact that, you know we've with these 20, 22, year old people, the ones that fight our daggum wars.”

“There's a difference between members of the greatest generation… risking their life to serve our country, and young staffers going in with their computers and trying to get access to personal data. There is a big difference.”
The conversation continued, and eventually Brown cut him off.
“All right, we’re going to leave it there,” Brown said.

Comments made by House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY)noted in a recent Bulwark report drew a scathing response from "Morning Joe" co-host Joe Scarborough on Thursday morning.
Discussing Donald Trump's desire to have lawmakers who investigated him over the Jan 6 insurrection hauled in and prosecuted, Comer claimed they were fair game.
According to the Bulwark, the Republican from Kentucky replied, "With politicians, if you’ve used a congressional committee and you’ve lied and tried to set people up and falsely imprisoned people, then you should be held accountable."

After co-host Mika Brzezinski read the quote, MSNBC's Scarborough pounced.
"Wow. I mean that's a hell of a confession by James Comer who lied repeatedly, repeatedly, about Joe Biden," he exclaimed.
"Is he going to send himself to jail? Is that what he is telling us right here," he asked with tongue in cheek.
Co-host Brzezinki carried on, reporting that Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) agreed with Comer, adding, "If they broke the law, then they should [be imprisoned]. Now we know that they’ve manipulated evidence, so—if that’s the case, then absolutely.”

a far-right Republican House lawmaker is alleging some members of Congress are compromised by “women, drugs, booze,” and suggested they are being blackmailed by Russia.
“This is how it works,” U.S. Rep. Tim Burchett(R-TN) told far-right podcast host Benny Johnson (video below). “You’re visiting, you’re out of the country, or out of town, or you’re in a motel or a bar in D.C., and some, whatever you’re, you’re into – women or men or whatever – comes up, and they’re very attractive, and they’re laughing at your jokes and, and they, and you’re buying them a drink, next thing you know you’re in the motel room with them naked.”
“And next thing you know, you know, you’re about to make a key vote and what happens?” Burchett continued. “Some well-dressed person comes up and whispers in your ear, ‘Hey, man, there’s tapes out on you,’ or, ‘Were you in a motel room, on, whatever with whoever?’ And then you’re like, ‘uh-oh,’ and [they] said, ‘You really ought not be voting for this thing.'”
Johnson described Burchett’s description as being “BLACKMAILED.”

“You got powerful people and they write the big checks,” Rep. Burchett said. “Let’s be honest and powerful people in this country, they write the big checks, and they, you know, they’re the ones out on the tarmac when the President comes and visits, and, whichever party they’re in, they’re always either out on the tarmac or in the private room. They’re the ones that write the big checks.”
“They don’t care who’s in, they hate this country, they hate what we’re about, but they love their portfolios and they love their money more than they do anything else,” Burchett continued. “And they protect it and they protect the people that do that and by doing so, you know, the old honeypot. The Russians do that. And I’m sure members of Congress have been caught up – why in the world would good conservatives vote for crazy stuff like what we’ve been saying out of Congress?”
“If it’s women, drugs, booze, it’ll find you in D.C. and in most elected offices, and that’s what people in power influence do. And it’s just, and I’ve been in this game my whole life has been 16 years in the state legislature in Tennessee and eight years as county mayor, and now I’m in my fifth year of Congress, but it’s just it. The stakes are higher but the with the game is still the same.”

hours after declaring that 'we're not going to fix' the uniquely American problem of pervasive gun violence in the wake of Monday's mass shooting at Covenant School in Nashville, United States Congressman Tim Burchett (R-Tennessee) suggested on Tuesday that renewable sources of energy are ineffective and inefficient wastes of time and money:
The Biden administration, and unfortunately the Democrats in Congress keep pushing these Green New Deal-style agendas. Honestly, Mr. Speaker, they just don't work. There hasn't been a new development in solar in over twenty years, and windmills are just what they are. Windmills. The wind doesn't always blow, and the Sun doesn't always shine in East Tennessee, and I'm sure that's the way it is across this great nation and it's costing Americans way too much. We're done with all this nonsense, Mr. Speaker.
Social media tore into Burchett over his remarks.

all 26 Republicans on the powerful House Oversight Committee have refused to sign a simple, two-sentence statement denouncing white supremacy.
"We, Members of the Committee on Oversight and Accountability, together denounce white nationalism and white supremacy in all its forms, including the 'Great Replacement' conspiracy theory. These hateful and dangerous ideologies have no place in the work of the United States Congress or our Committee," the statement (copy below) from Ranking Member Jamie Raskin (D-MD) reads.
It comes after several Oversight Committee Republicans "invoked dangerous and conspiratorial rhetoric echoing the racist and nativist tropes peddled by white supremacists and right-wing extremists," during a February hearing on the "border crisis," Ranking Member Raskin said in a March 5 letter to Committee Chair James Comer (photo, top.) The Washington Post first reported on Raskin’s letter.
"In particular, some Members repeatedly described the number of migrants arriving at the border as an 'invasion,' and even went so far as to falsely accuse the Biden-Harris Administration of implementing a plan 'to deliberately open our border' for purposes of 'changing our culture'—mirroring language often used by MAGA extremists who believe that pro-immigration policies are designed to replace white populations with non-white immigrants and other racial minorities," Raskin's letter says.
Congressman Raskin is a former constitutional law professor who gained national prominence as the impeachment manager during the second impeachment of Donald Trump.

"As I explained to you at the hearing," his letter to Comer continues, "such language borrows from the 'Great Replacement' theory, the central dogma of contemporary white supremacy that has been repeatedly invoked by white nationalists to justify violent acts of domestic terrorism, including the mass murders of dozens of Americans at a Tops Supermarket in Buffalo, New York, the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and a Walmart in El Paso, Texas."
All 21 Democrats on the Oversight Committee signed the statement, and all 26 Republicans refused. A Committee spokesperson called the statement a "distraction," according to The Independent.
the 26 Republican Representatives who refused to denounce white supremacy and white nationalism are (in order of appearance on the statement): James Comer, Jim Jordan, Mike Turner, Paul Gosar, Virginia Foxx, Glenn Grothman, Gary Palmer, Clay Higgins, Pete Sessions, Andy Biggs, Nancy Mace, Jake LaTurner, pat Fallon, Byron Donalds, Kelly Armstrong, Scott Perry, William Timmons, Tim Burchett, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lisa McClain, Lauren Boebert, Russell Fry, Anna Paulina Luna, Chuck Edwards, Nick Langworthy, and Eric Burlison.
