Fox News defends Texas man convicted of murdering Black Lives Matter protester and attacks DA who prosecuted the case

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced that he would seek a pardon for convicted murderer Daniel Perry after Fox's Tucker Carlson asked him to

Fox News personalities are rallying behind Daniel Perry, a Texas man who was convicted of murdering a Black Lives Matter protester, and attacking the district attorney overseeing his case.

On April 7, a Travis County jury convicted Perry of murdering a protester at a Black Lives Matter rally in 2020. Perry, then an active-duty Army sergeant and ride-share driver, shot and killed an armed protester named Garrett Foster. In June 2020, a month before the shooting, Perry texted a friend saying, “I might have to kill a few people on my way to work, they are rioting outside my apartment complex.” Perry’s attorney claimed that he was acting in self-defense, but witnesses indicated that he was driving dangerously close to protesters and that Foster never aimed his weapon at Perry. The jury sided with witnesses who contradicted Perry.

Nonetheless, Tucker Carlson and other Fox News personalities defended Perry and attacked Travis County District Attorney José Garza, whose office prosecuted the case, claiming that Garza unfairly targeted an upstanding conservative and is a shill for philanthropist George Soros.

Carlson campaigns for pardon and rails against “Soros-funded” DA guilty of “legal atrocity”

The same day Perry was convicted, Carlson dedicated a segment of his show to arguing that Perry had acted in self-defense against a “mob of rioters” that included Foster, whom Carlson smeared as “a militant with a history of waving his rifle at people.” Carlson also blamed Austin’s “Soros-funded” district attorney for engineering a politically motivated murder charge, claiming that “means in the state of Texas, if you have the wrong politics, you’re not allowed to defend yourself.”

Carlson ended the segment by criticizing Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott for his apparent unwillingness to discuss the “legal atrocity” on Carlson's show. Abbott’s absence, Carlson argued, amounted to an endorsement of the murder conviction. “So that is Greg Abbott’s position: There is no right of self-defense in Texas.”

The next day, Abbott answered Carlson’s call and tweeted that he was “working as swiftly as Texas law allows regarding the pardon of Sgt. Perry.”

Carlson and Fox News have demonstrated a pattern of blaming “Soros-backed” district attorneys and prosecutors for supposedly allowing crime to go unchecked, but then reflexively defending acts of violence committed against left-wing protestors by perpetrators sympathetic to its right-wing audience. Perhaps the most memorable example is Kyle Rittenhouse, the Illinois resident who shot several protesters — killing two — during a 2020 protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and subsequently rose to right-wing fame.

In fact, Carlson called upon Rittenhouse to help him plead Perry’s case during his April 10 prime-time show. The two spent an entire segment petitioning Abbott to pardon Perry. Rittenhouse told Carlson that Perry “defended himself” and argued that Perry “knows what he did was right.” For his part, Carlson said, “George Soros can’t pay for people to put his political opponents in jail and then have a Republican governor ignore it.”

After Rittenhouse was acquitted of homicide charges in 2021, Carlson lavished praise on Rittenhouse, calling him a “sweet kid,” while other Fox personalities and guests described Rittenhouse as “a bit of an icon” and a “good kid” who just did “what the government should have done.”

Fox personalities lionize Perry and criticize “activist DA” who “doesn't believe in law and order”

As with Rittenhouse, Fox News is lionizing Perry and framing him as a victim of a “Soros-backed” district attorney with a political agenda:

On Fox & Friends First, guest co-host Ashley Strohmier described racial justice protests as “riots” before noting of the district attorney, “Garza is being criticized for letting numerous criminals off easy,” and interviewing the family of a murder victim in Austin who said Garza “cherry-picks who he would like to prosecute and who he lets go.”

Fox & Friends guest co-host Lisa Boothe asked Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton — who is under federal investigation for allegedly using his position to solicit bribes — if he agreed that “progressive district attorneys are trying to do across the country is nullify our right to self-defense.” Paxton responded that Soros is “dropping nuclear bombs on our state.”

In other segments, Boothe claimed that, in Perry’s situation, “I would shoot” and argued that the “far-left Austin DA” and other progressives do not want citizens to defend themselves. “What it comes down to is these DAs, these progressive DAs in the country, they don’t want you to engage in self-defense,” she argued. “I guess you're just supposed to allow yourself to die?”

On America Reports, one of Fox News’ so-called “straight news” programs, Fox guest Leo Terrell applauded Abbott for “doing the right thing” and argued that Perry had “acted in self-defense.” Terrell then argued that Garza was a “DA who doesn't believe in law and order; he believes in George Soros.” (Guest co-host Bill Melugin also described Garza as “Soros-backed” during a follow-up question.)

During the same segment, co-host Sandra Smith played a clip featuring Perry’s mother pleading her son’s case. Smith described her sympathetically as “a mother who has gone through quite a lot here, and understandable, her emotion here.”

During the April 11 edition of Outnumbered, Fox panelists agreed that Perry had been the victim of a rogue district attorney. Co-host Kayleigh McEnany argued that Garza had “campaigned on prosecuting cops” and cited a local crime commission’s charges that Garza had withheld critical evidence from investigations. “When you're a rogue DA funded by George Soros, you get results like this,” McEnany said.

Meanwhile, right-wing radio host Ben Ferguson argued that Perry had been the victim of an “activist DA” who targeted him for being in the military. “You go to the police, you tell them where you are, you tell them what happened. They say you're good. It's self-defense. You're OK. And a year later, an activist DA comes in and says no, you're in the military. I'm going to go after you because you're in the military."

Firm Tied to Kristi Noem Secretly Got Money From $220 Million DHS Ad Contracts
The company is run by the husband of Noem’s chief DHS spokesperson and has personal and business ties to Noem and her aides. DHS invoked the “emergency” at the border to skirt competitive bidding rules for the taxpayer-funded campaign.

On Oct. 2, the second day of the government shutdown, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem arrived at Mount Rushmore to shoot a television ad. Sitting on horseback in chaps and a cowboy hat, Noem addressed the camera with a stern message for immigrants: “Break our laws, we’ll punish you.” [BUFFALO?]

Noem has hailed the more than $200 million, taxpayer-funded ad campaign as a crucial tool to stem illegal immigration. Her agency invoked the “national emergency” at the border as it awarded contracts for the campaign, bypassing the normal competitive bidding process designed to prevent waste and corruption.

The Department of Homeland Security has kept at least one beneficiary of the nine-figure ad deal a secret, records and interviews show: a Republican consulting firm with long-standing personal and business ties to Noem and her senior aides at DHS. The company running the Mount Rushmore shoot, called the Strategy Group, does not appear on public documents about the contract. The main recipient listed on the contracts is a mysterious Delaware company, which was created days before the deal was finalized.

No firm has closer ties to Noem’s political operation than the Strategy Group. It played a central role in her 2022 South Dakota gubernatorial campaign. Corey Lewandowski, her top adviser at DHS, has worked extensively with the firm. And the company’s CEO is married to Noem’s chief spokesperson at DHS, Tricia McLaughlin.

The Strategy Group’s ad work is the first known example of money flowing from Noem’s agency to businesses controlled by her allies and friends.

Government contracting experts said the depth of the ties between DHS leadership and the Strategy Group suggested major potential violations of ethics rules.

“It’s corrupt, is the word,” said Charles Tiefer, a leading authority on federal contract law and former member of the Commission on Wartime Contracting in Iraq and Afghanistan. He said that the Strategy Group’s role should prompt investigations by both the DHS inspector general and the House Oversight Committee.

“Hiding your friends as subcontractors is like playing hide the salami with the taxpayer,” Tiefer added.

Federal regulations forbid conflicts of interest in contracting and require that the process be conducted “with complete impartiality and with preferential treatment for none.”

“It’s worthy of an investigation to ferret out how these decisions were made, and whether they were made legally and without bias,” said Scott Amey, a contracting expert and general counsel at the watchdog group Project on Government Oversight.

The revelations come as the amount of money at Noem’s disposal has skyrocketed. The so-called Big Beautiful Bill granted DHS more than $150 billion, and Noem has given herself an unusual degree of control over how that money is spent. This summer, she began requiring that she personally approve any payment over $100,000.

Asked about the Strategy Group’s work for DHS, McLaughlin, the agency spokesperson, said in an interview, “We don’t have visibility into why they were chosen.”

“I don’t know who they’re a subcontractor with, but I don’t work with them because I have a conflict of interest and I fully recused myself,” she said. “My marriage is one thing and work is another. I don’t combine them.” Her husband, Strategy Group CEO Ben Yoho, didn’t respond to questions.

“My marriage is one thing and work is another. I don’t combine them,” said DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin, who is married to Strategy Group CEO Ben Yoho. Tricia McLaughlin via Instagram

In a written statement, DHS said, “DHS has no involvement with the selection of subcontractors.” They added that the Strategy Group does not have a direct contract with the agency, saying “DHS cannot and does not determine, control, or weigh in on who contractors hire.”

Contracting experts said that agencies can and do sometimes require that subcontractors be approved by officials. It’s not clear how much the Strategy Group has been paid.

This is not the first time that the Strategy Group has gotten public money through a Noem contract. As governor of South Dakota in 2023, her administration set off a scandal by hiring the Ohio-based company to do a different ad campaign, paying it $8.5 million in state funds. While the state said the contract was done by the book, a former Noem administration official told ProPublica that Noem quietly intervened to ensure the Strategy Group got the deal. ProPublica granted some people anonymity to discuss the deals because of their sensitivity.

The firm also paid up to $25,000 to one of Noem’s closest advisers in South Dakota, previously unreported records show. (The adviser, 28-year-old Madison Sheahan, now serves at DHS as the second-in-command of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Sheahan didn’t respond to questions about why she was paid.)

The DHS ad that the company filmed at Mount Rushmore has aired during “Fox & Friends” in recent days. Executives from the Strategy Group traveled to the shoot and hired subcontractors to fill out the film crew, according to records and a person involved in the campaign. The ad’s aesthetic sits somewhere between a political campaign ad and a Jeep commercial as Noem tells would-be immigrants to “come here the right way.”

“From the cowboys who tamed the West to the titans who built our cities,” Noem says, as images of Trump Tower in Chicago and Trump raising his fist after the assassination attempt last year flash on the screen, “America has always rewarded vision and grit.” Noem continues: “You cross the border illegally, we’ll find you.”

Obtained by ProPublica

The ad is the latest in a campaign that Noem debuted in February, just a few weeks after she took charge of DHS. “Any delay in providing these critical communications to the public will increase the spread of misinformation, especially misinformation by smugglers,” the agency wrote, explaining why it was skipping the competitive bidding process normally required for government contracts. The initial ads featured Noem thanking Trump for securing the border.

The contracts total $220 million so far, leading the DHS ad budget to triple in the most recent fiscal year, according to Bloomberg. The lion’s share of ad contracts is typically used to buy TV airtime or spots on social media. Advertising firms make money by taking an often-hefty commission. Federal records show the contracts have gone to two firms. One is a Republican ad company in Louisiana called People Who Think, which has been awarded $77 million.

But the majority of the money — $143 million — has gone to a mysterious LLC in Delaware. The company was created just days before it was awarded the deal.

Little is known about the Delaware company, which is called Safe America Media and lists its address as the Virginia home of a veteran Republican operative, Michael McElwain. McElwain has long had his own advertising company (separate from the Delaware one), but there’s little evidence that firm could handle a nine-figure federal contract on its own: It reported just five employees when it received COVID-19 relief money a few years ago.

How, where and to whom Safe America Media doled out the $143 million is unknown. Any subcontractors hired to do work on the DHS ads are not disclosed in federal contracting databases.

The office funding the ad contracts is listed as the DHS Office of Public Affairs, which is run by McLaughlin, contract records show. McLaughlin married Yoho, the Strategy Group CEO, earlier this year.

In its statement, DHS said the agency does its contracting “by the book” and the process is run by career officials. “It is very sad that Pro Publica would seek to defame these public servants,” DHS added.

Asked about why the agency chose Safe America Media, DHS said, “The results speak for themselves: the most secure border in American history and over 2 million illegal aliens exiting the United States.” McElwain and People Who Think didn’t respond to questions.

Yoho was still in college when he first served as campaign manager for a U.S. congressman. Now, at 38 years old, he’s a national player in the cutthroat industry of political advertising. Federal election records show tens of millions in payments to his firm during the 2024 election cycle, coming from dozens of Republican congressional candidates. And Noem has proved a particularly lucrative client.

Lewandowski brought Yoho into Noem’s inner circle back in South Dakota, according to two people familiar with the matter, putting the young consultant in charge of the ad side of her 2022 gubernatorial reelection campaign. Noem had a more than $5 million advertising budget for the race, records show. After she won in a landslide, Yoho, who has called Noem a friend, came to South Dakota to attend her inauguration ceremony. He sat off to the side of the stage, next to Lewandowski. (Lewandowski didn’t respond to a request for comment.)

Yoho shared a photo of himself with Noem and her husband, Bryon, at Noem’s 2023 inauguration in South Dakota. Benjamin Yoho via X

By then, Yoho’s next big project with Noem was already in the works. In late 2022, Noem was quietly preparing to launch another sprawling ad campaign — only this time, the money would come from state coffers. The stated goal was to encourage workers to move to South Dakota. The upcoming contract opportunity wasn’t public yet, but Yoho was already involved in planning the campaign, according to records first reported by Sioux Falls Live.

Then on Jan. 12, 2023, Yoho’s company registered to do business in South Dakota under the name Go West Media. The next day, the contract opportunity went live.

Seven companies submitted proposals for the project. Then the pressure from above set in, according to a former Noem administration official involved in the process.

The former official said a top Noem aide told them the governor would be angry if Yoho’s company didn’t win the contract. “He was very direct: ‘She wants to do it,’” they said. Contemporaneous text messages reviewed by ProPublica corroborate that senior Noem administration officials pushed for Yoho to get the contract. Eventually, he did. (In its statement, DHS denied that Noem influenced the process.)

Noem starred in Yoho’s ads herself, dressing up as a dentist,a plumber anda state trooper as she touted her state’s growing economy. Exactly how much Yoho and the Strategy Group made off the $8.5 million deal is unclear. Some of the money was used to purchase spots on Fox News, including one during a Republican presidential debate. Some of the money appears to have gone back to South Dakota — into the bank account of another of Noem’s top advisers.

Noem in costume in ads she starred in that were produced by the Strategy Group, funded with public money in South Dakota. South Dakota Governor’s Office of Economic Development via YouTube

Sheahan, now the second-in-command at ICE, was paid up to $25,000 by Go West in 2023 for “consulting,” according to a financial disclosure document Sheahan later filed. At the time, Sheahan was serving as both the operations director for Noem as governor and the political director for Noem’s campaign work, according to a copy of her 2023 resume obtained by ProPublica. Her responsibilities included coordinating “daily logistics and operations” for Noem and her team, the resume said. She also managed the “relationship with high level donors” to American Resolve, Noem’s network of outside political groups.

As his firm received millions from the South Dakota state government, Yoho separately continued to work for Noem in other capacities. He worked under Lewandowski on the publicity campaign for Noem’s 2024 memoir, according to a person familiar with the matter. (The book became famous for including an anecdote about Noem shooting her dog.)

The Strategy Group also received a stream of payments for social media consulting and media production work over the last few years from Noem’s American Resolve PAC. Federal election records show the PAC made its last payment to Yoho’s company this February, a couple weeks after Noem took her post as the head of DHS.

Fox ignores climate change while covering collapsing houses along the North Carolina coast

:{SpecialPrograms Climate & Energy:(style="font-family:Merriweather"):}:

Written by Ilana Berger

Published09/19/25

During a September 18 segment, Fox & Friends covered the most recent instance of a house collapsing into the Atlantic Ocean — this time on Hatteras Island in North Carolina — and mentioned erosion along the coast, but left out that climate change is contributing to the problem. Sea-level rise and erosion from increasingly severe storms has helped claim 11 other homes in the unincorporated community of Rodanthe, North Carolina.

CARLEY SHIMKUS (CO-HOST): A stilt house collapsing on the shore along the Outer Banks of North Carolina this week. It's now the 12th home claimed by the Atlantic Ocean in the past five years. The two-story beach home fell at the north end of Hatteras Island. Thankfully, the home was empty at the time. Officials say recent storms have worsened erosion, leading to more collapses like this. Those are your headlines, guys. Huge home.

AINSLEY EARHARDT (CO-HOST): It's interesting they let them just collapse. They don't destroy them before, knowing this is going to happen.

SHIMKUS: Yeah, that's right. And clearly the ocean is moving up the shore or they wouldn't have built that home in the first place.

EARHARDT: It's a big problem. It's a big problem on the East Coast. And you spend so much to have that beachfront property and then, you know — over time, it's gone.

SHIMKUS: It is, yes.

The Charlotte Observer correctly implicated the role of climate change in its reporting on the home’s destruction, highlighting that Hurricane Erin in August generated “waves as high as 50 feet,” causing “severe erosion in some places along the East Coast.”

The Observer noted that “the home was well away from the ocean and behind a vegetated dune when it was built in 1969. But a series of storms, which have occurred more frequently in recent years due to climate change, carved away the beach and the dune and brought the surf up to the pilings of the home and a string of others to its north and south.”

While the Fox & Friends segment mentioned that worsening storms “have caused erosion,” the network has repeatedly downplayed any connections between hurricanes and climate change, which has been making storms grow rapidly and more intense, destroying homes and businesses. Fox has also downplayed the threat of sea level rise, which occurs “mostly due to a combination of melt water from glaciers and ice sheets and thermal expansion of seawater as it warms,” according to NASA.

As FactCheck.org pointed out, “For every inch of sea level rise, approximately 100 inches of beach are lost, according to NASA oceanographer and climate scientist Josh Willis.”

Trump’s Department of Energy recently published a so-called “critical review” of climate science, which included several climate contrarians as authors and “cherry-picks text, data, and studies that paint an incomplete picture” in order “to suggest rising sea-levels in the US are only due to land-sinking,” according to the Union of Concerned Scientists. The DOE report uses limited information to claim that there is “no obvious acceleration beyond the historical average rate of sea level rise.”

Meanwhile, members of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, which manages the coastal area that was impacted, told The Charlotte Observer that “there are probably dozens of homes endangered on the oceanfront.”

BRIAN KILMEADE (CO-HOST): So let's talk Democrats. And for the most part, you're looking at a party looking for leaders. But one thing they are getting is big crowds. And they're getting big crowds where Bernie Sanders and AOC are traveling around. They're going to areas, and there's definitely people out there when you have 49, you know, when you have millions of people vote for Democrats, you can get a big crowd. I'm astounded to see Yale University did a survey, and it says that AOC is now in the second spot behind Kamala Harris as the most popular, but she's supposed to be the working class socialist. A message to those that oligarchs are ruining this country, and the rich are gonna get richer unless she is voted in, and 83 year old Bernie Sanders is the nominal leader.

LAWRENCE JONES (CO-HOST): So you got Kamala Harris at the top of the list.

AINSLEY EARHARDT (CO-HOST): It's — yes, you're right. Yeah.

JONES: She lost every swing state. The American people overwhelmingly rejected her. She was a bumbling mess on the campaign trail, could not complete her sentences accurately. No one really knew what she stood for. And then you got AOC that's right behind her, Ainsley.

EARHARDT: Is she tied with Cory Booker?

JONES: Exactly. A radical. The people in the country aren't gonna sign up for her agenda. I just think it's another double down on crazy.

EARHARDT: You know, this is what, this is what we all feared. I remember when Bernie Sanders came on the scene, and he said, ‘I'm a socialist.' We were like,‘What? No one's voting for you.' Now look at these crowds. This is where our country is going, and it is very, very scary. They are socialist. They are so far to the left. They are progressive.

MSG hATE RALLY

October 28, 2024, edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends

STEVE DOOCY (CO-HOST): It felt a lot like the RNC reunion. You saw a lot of people you saw at the RNC right there.

Of all the comments, however, of the warm-up acts, there was a comic who made some offensive comments about Latinos and Puerto Ricans and African-Americans and others. And he has already been denounced by Republicans and by the campaign.

But unfortunately for the Trump campaign, the Harris campaign has denounced it and mobilized influential Puerto Rican influencers like Bad Bunny, who is very big in the Puerto Rican community and Latino community — he put out something on Instagram. And so did Ricky Martin with millions of followers and he wrote or he said this is what they think of us, vote for Kamala Harris. A Trump adviser said the speaker's remarks were not vetted. We are going to talk to Karoline Leavitt — she's gonna be with us in a moment.

BRIAN KILMEADE (CO-HOST): Part of the pre-show, that was two hours before the president.

DOOCY: Yup, the warm-up.

KILMEADE: It's amazing. The cover of The New York Times, Trump at Garden, a closing carnival of grievances, misogyny, and racism. Only, only somebody who works for the Harris campaign pretending to be a reporter for The New York Times would write something like that if you watched, that three hours or four hours. You had to flip around to get it. We didn't take all of it live. But also — you don't point out that R.F.K. the famous Democratic family actually was one of the featured speakers around the most famous inventor in the world, Elon Musk? That stands out? No, a comedian with a successful podcast said some off-color.

LAWRENCE JONES (CO-HOST): But you lose goodwill when before the rally even started they called it a Nazi rally. Before they even took the stage. They had already said that it was going to be a racist rally.

And so number two, maybe it's just me, Dana, uh Ainsley, I have a dark sense of humor you know? And so I like — maybe this was not the appropriate format for the comedian to be there but it's comedy.

Trump publicly bragged about tanking the border bill — now a Fox host is trying to help him revise history

Written by Media Matters Staff

Published 09/27/24

Fox & Friendsco-host Ainsley Earhardt is helping former President Donald Trump run cover for his public sabotage of a bipartisan immigration bill he previously bragged about tanking.

On the September 27 episode, Earhardt argued that while Vice President Kamala Harris has been blaming Trump for the failed immigration bill, “he says, ‘I never called those lawmakers.’ Those lawmakers say the same thing. ‘No — he had nothing to do with it. We didn’t like the bill.'”

Earhardt’s attempt to help Trump revise history is stymied by a series of facts.

Trump publicly came out against the bill in a Truth Social post, stating, “I do not think we should do a Border Deal, at all, unless we get EVERYTHING needed to shut down the INVASION.” In a separate post, Trump wrote, “Only a fool, or a Radical Left Democrat, would vote for this horrendous Border Bill.”

Trump himself has previously owned the blame for the failed bill. At a late January rally, Trump vowed to “fight it all the way” and stated, “A lot of the senators are trying to say, respectfully, they’re blaming it on me. I say, that’s okay. Please blame it on me. Please.”

September 25, 2024, edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends

AINSLEY EARHARDT (FOX HOST): Think about the few speeches we have heard her give or interviews we have heard her give. She is not focusing on the environment anymore, climate.

STEVE DOOCY (HOST): Listen, and regarding costs of stuff. When she talks about how insurance — your insurance, your home insurance is going up, because of climate change, I have actually heard that from my insurance broker. They said okay. Your rates are going way up. I said why? Because of the weather. Because of climate change. So that is — that's somebody who is not a partisan.

AINSLEY EARHARDT: They just want to charge you more, It's the weather. El Nino.

STEVE DOOCY: Also why they are canceling people. That's why she is using that.

BRIAN KILMEADE (HOST): One more windmill and his insurance rates will go down. Fantastic. Get me those solar panels from China.

LAWRENCE JONES (HOST): Right.

As Media Matters recently documented:

During the August 28 edition of Fox News’ America’s Newsroom, Fox Business correspondent Max Gordon reported on the skyrocketing cost of car insurance, another one of the “big issues coming up in the campaign” according to anchor Dana Perino. Gordon went on to connect this pocketbook issue to climate change, noting that the, “Increase in severe weather events has been one of the main drivers behind these increasing premiums. Climate events that cause a billion dollars or more in damage have been steadily on the rise, impacting how insurers set rates.”

Notably, the climate crisis is creating a housing insurance crisis as well. Climate change is making storms and wildfires more destructive. Last year, the U.S. experienced a record 28 disasters that cost more than a billion dollars each in damage. In response, some private insurers are raising premiums in areas frequently hit by extreme weather or pulling out of high-risk areas altogether, leaving homeowners uninsured.

Rising insurance costs are not the only economic impact of climate change. A study released early this year found that climate change is among the factors driving inflation which is “driving up the prices of food and other goods worldwide.” As Axios reported: “This is not the first study to note the economic toll of climate change, or even the inflationary pressures of increasing temperatures and extreme weather events."

Here is a recent CBS News segment on how climate change is affecting insurance rates:

the “crime crisis” narrative Fox News concocted for Donald Trump was exposed at Tuesday night’s debate when moderator David Muir pointed out that FBI data shows violent crime has actually fallen dramatically in recent years. The network’s stars are responding by lashing out at Muir, falsely claiming violent crime is actually up, and arguing that even if data show violent crime is plummeting, “we're all a little bit more scared than we used to be.”

Trump, in a nonresponsive answer to a question about how he would carry out his plan to deport millions of undocumented immigrants, claimed that due to migration under President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, “crime in this country is through the roof. And we have a new form of crime. It's called migrant crime. And it's happening at levels that nobody thought possible.”

Trump’s assertion of rising crime echoed months of anecdote-based Fox coverage — but Muir pointed out in response that actual data shows the opposite, saying, “President Trump, as you know, the FBI says overall violent crime is coming down in this country.”

Indeed, preliminary FBI data released in June found “steep drops in every category of violent crime in every region in the first three months of 2024 compared to a year earlier, continuing a downward trend since a coronavirus pandemic surge” during Trump’s administration.

Trump responded to Muir by echoing baseless right-wing media claims that the FBI had been “defrauding” data. But the agency’s report is consistent with other sources showing that crime is falling.

The co-hosts of Fox & Friends responded the next morning by arguing that data that shows violent crime has fallen is irrelevant in the face of the vibes.

“Any time people say violent crime is down in America,” offered Brian Kilmeade, “I ask you, people of Philadelphia, where they are hosting, find anyone in Philadelphia who thinks violent crime is down. I ask you, people of Chicago, site of the DNC, walk around and tell us how crime is under control. I ask you in Washington, D.C., where violent crime is down, the carjacking capital of the country, ask anyone in Washington, D.C., if they feel safer today than four years ago. There is the numbers and there is the reality.”

“It’s the word ‘violent,’ however they define ‘violent.’ Crime is up,” responded Ainsley Earhardt.

“Kamala Harris didn’t even make that point — it was the moderators,” Lawrence Jones added. “They’re not there covering these stories. They’re not going to all these major cities talking about the violence that is impacting urban America on the day to days, so they probably believe what the FBI numbers are saying.”

In fact, according to data compiled by the Major Cities Chiefs Association, all three cities Kilmeade mentioned have seen steep declines in homicides and at least one other category of violent crime the group reported (rapes, robberies, and/or aggravated assaults).

Video

CitationFrom the September 11, 2024, edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends.

The trio returned to the subject later in the program.

“One of my favorite parts of the debate, and when it just became clear to me that the bias was jumping off the screen at one point, was the conversation about crime,” Jones complained. “And then David hops in and says, ‘Well, actually, the FBI is saying that the crime is going down.’”

“OK, well now, we know those numbers aren’t quite accurate,” he continued, echoing Trump’s false claim from the debate. Jones then urged Muir to spend more time focusing his broadcast on crime anecdotes, saying, “David, you have a newscast every single day. You may not report on it, but you have local affiliates in major cities all across this country. They are reporting on the crime in Chicago, in Philadelphia. Why not pick up the phone and call them and see what’s going on on the ground?”

“I think, Lawrence, the operative word there was ‘violent,’ and David said, ‘Violent crime has gone down,’” Earhardt replied. “We know that crime is up in these cities, we know that thousands, millions of more illegal immigrants have come over our border under this administration, many of them are affiliated with gangs. We know that more of them have murdered more little girls or young women than ever in my lifetime.” (Earhardt was alive in the 1990s, when violent crime and homicides peaked at levels dramatically higher than the present.)

“So violent crime might be going down,” she continued, “but crime overall, we're all a little bit more scared than we used to be."

“Ask anybody in the streets of Philadelphia, outside where that debate was taking place, if they think crime is going down,” Kilmeade added. “In New York City, you walk the streets here, I don't care what the bar chart or the pie chart says, it’s not going down.”

RACHEL CAMPOS-DUFFY (FOX NEWS HOST): What's the other side? It's a globalist ticket with these mystery puppet masters running it. We don't really know who is making the decisions on the other side. And I think this is so interesting because so many times people say, you know, "we want unity" and they accuse Donald Trump, in particular, of being so divisive and here you have RFK Jr., you know, a prominent Democrat and Donald Trump, the nominee for the Republican Party, reaching across the aisle, to find common ground. And I was thinking, Ainsley, what are those common issues?

It's the border. The economy, government surveillance, free speech, peace in the world, and food policy. Think about the other side, we just had a week of the Democrat convention. I can't tell you what their policies are. Other than abortion. And so I just think these are huge issues, the one's that I laid out for you that RFK and Donald Trump agree on. I think this is a real threat just to the system and kind of speaks to what I always thought, Donald Trump isn't really running against Kamala Harris, he is running against a corrupt system. And I think he's promising, along with RFK Jr. and JD Vance, to sort of blow up that system, expose the corruption. And nowhere do you see that more than in our food policy.

News outlets reported that Vice President Kamala Harris proposed raising the corporate tax rate to 28% if she wins the presidency this November, partially rolling back the Trump-era tax cuts that slashed corporate taxes.

Even though corporate tax revenue plummeted in response to the Trump tax cuts, and American corporations are undertaxed relative to other developed economies in the OECD, conservative media began assailing Harris’ policy with false claims of immediate and “massive layoffs” and higher inflation.

As the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities has explained, Trump’s 2017 tax cut was skewed to the richest Americans, and the corporate tax cut even moreso, with the bottom 90% of workers gaining nothing from the corporate tax rate cut, while corporate executives earning nearly $1 million a year got an average $50,000 earnings boost. A leading reason that Trump's corporate tax changes benefited the wealthy was the imposition of a flat tax of 21% to replace what had been a graduated rate system, ranging from 15% to 35%.

:{And thanks to Trump’s tax cuts, even as corporate profits went up during most of his presidency, corporate tax revenue dropped until the pandemic and the years after. Corporate tax revenue as a share of the economy remains near historic lows at under 2% of gross domestic product, and it’s also near historic lows as a share of federal tax revenue. :{}:

Meanwhile, the Organisation for Economic Co-operations and Development (OECD) average showed corporate tax revenue in 2020 at just over 15% of total tax revenue, and 3% of GDP, showing that U.S. corporations have a very light tax burden in comparison. In 2023, the Institute of Taxation and Economic Policy estimated that raising the corporate tax rate to 28% would raise more than $1.3 trillion in revenue over 10 years.

Yet conservative media reacted to Harris’ proposal with hyperbolic doom and gloom. Citing an analysis from the Tax Foundation, Fox News personalities claimed that raising the corporate tax rate would lead to “massive layoffs” “right off the bat.” Yet the Tax Foundation’s analysis projected a loss of only 128,000 “full-time equivalent jobs” by 2034. This is a drop in the bucket of the millions of jobs projected to be created over the course of a decade. Other conservatives claimed that raising the corporate tax rate would be inflationary; in reality, tax increases are broadly considered deflationary.

* Wash. Times columnist and Trump campaign staffer Tim Murtaugh: “She wants to tax job creators at a higher rate than Chinese communists do.” Murtaugh added: “Who do you think will pay for the tax increase? Do you suppose maybe it’s passed on to consumers like always? Harris is dangerous.” Twitter/X, [8/20/24]

far-right MAGA Republicans typically regard Fox News and Fox Businesses as safe spaces, expecting softball questions if they are interviewed by Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham or Maria Bartiromo. But House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Kentucky) is avoiding the morning show "Fox and Friends" after being mildly challenged by long-time co-host Steve Doocy.

Comer has been pushing for an impeachment of President Joe Biden and trying to link him to his son Hunter Biden's legal problems. But when Comer appeared on "Fox and Friends" on Monday morning, December 11, Doocy told him, "They've connected the dots, the Department of Justice did, on Hunter, but they have not shown where Joe Biden, you know, did anything illegally."

Doocy wasn't especially forceful. But when Comer was interviewed by Newsmax's Eric Bolling the following day, he announced that he has decided to avoid "Fox and Friends."

"He's had that position from the very beginning,” the far-right House Oversight chairman said of Doocy.

Comer told Bolling, "I've quit going on 'Fox & Friends' because of Doocy, you know? I mean, he's the one guy on Fox that's been very critical of the investigation. I have my theory why, and we'll talk about that at a later point. But at the end of the day, he's entitled to his opinion. But I don't think the average viewer of Fox News agrees with Doocy one bit."

The New Republic's Ellie Quinlan Houghtaling, in an article published on December 13, emphasized that Comer was triggered by a "tiny hole in the conservative safety net."

"If Comer is too afraid to face down Fox News for even the mildest bout of criticism," Houghtaling writes, "what does that mean for the actual impeachment proceedings, which Republicans seemingly want to keep in the dark? Last week, the caucus threatened to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress if he refused to appear for a closed-door deposition, despite the president's son's previously voiced preference for a public hearing, fearing that information from those interviews would be selectively leaked and used to 'manipulate, even distort, the facts and misinform the American public.'"

Right-wing media downplay the hottest day in modern history with the help of Twitter’s community notes feature

Special PROGRAMS

CLIMATE & ENERGY

WRITTEN BY ILANA BERGER

PUBLISHED 07/11/23

In response to widespread mainstream coverage of what scientists say was the hottest day in modern history, right-wing media predictably downplayed extreme heat with the help of Twitter’s community notes feature.

Scientists say July 6 could have been the hottest day in some 120,000 years, reaching a global average temperature of 63.02 degrees Fahrenheit. It was the fourth straight day to set or tie that record. A wide variety of other news outlets covered the record-breaking heat, including CNN, which tweeted on June 5: “The planet saw its hottest day ever this week. The record will be broken again and again” and linked to an article.

Before long, some users were claiming that CNN was being dishonest in its wording. A community note, a feature that allows users to “add context” below “potentially misleading” tweets, appeared below it:

Image of CNN tweet: "The planet saw its hottest day ever this week. The record will be broken again and again"

But this information was already front and center in CNN’s article, right under the lede.

Reporter Laura Paddison wrote: “On Monday, the average global temperature reached 17.01 degrees Celsius (62.62 Fahrenheit), the highest in the US National Centers for Environmental Prediction’s data, which goes back to 1979. On Tuesday, it climbed even further, reaching 17.18 degrees Celsius and global temperature remained at this record-high on Wednesday.”

The note even cited the very same article that was already linked in the tweet. Nonetheless, right-wing media piled on, creating another fake “gotcha” moment:

Fox & Friends Weekend co-host Will Cain told frequent Fox News guest and climate change denier Marc Morano that CNN is dishonestly convincing climate protesters they are “living on the edge of apocalypse”:  Morano falsely claimed that warming isn’t significant because “we're on an almost nine-year no change in temperature going back to about 2014-15 now.” Cain added: “All of this climate change data that we have, it’s short term as well. We can’t go back. We don’t know. I know they suggest —we don't know the climate over every ounce, every moment of this world's history.” [Fox News, Fox News Tonight, 7/8/23]

Blogger and climate change denier Tony Heller: “According to @CNN, earth is hotter now then when palm trees grew at the poles. #ClimateScam.”  [Twitter, 7/6/23]

British conservative activist and “social media commentator” Adam Brooks: “Community notes hand CNN a big custard pie in the face… climate propaganda is out of control. Agenda.” [Twitter, 7/6/23]

Fox News contributor Joe Concha: “CNN's version of the beginning of time is apparently the year before the network launched in 1980…” [Twitter, 7/6/23]

The Federalist co-founder Sean Davis:“If you legitimately believe that yesterday was literally the hottest day IN ALL OF HISTORY, then you are too stupid to exist and you should be deported.” [Twitter, 7/5/23]

Singer and frequent Timcastguest Phil Labonte: “It wasn’t the hottest day ever.” [Twitter, 7/5/23]

Megan Kelly Show producer Steve Krakauer: “‘Hottest day ever”’* *since 1979 haha.” [Twitter, 7/5/23]

Former Fox News producer Kyle Becker wrote that the record “is an absolute lie”:  Becker highlighted the well-known fact that Earth was hotter in the Paleozoic era and that “life on earth flourished in both of these eras, despite much higher carbon dioxide levels and much higher average global temperatures.” This life did not include humans and this fact does not disprove the existence of human-caused climate change. [Twitter, 7/5/23]

Gov. Ron DeSantis press secretary Jeremy Redfern tweeted a graph of global temperature over 500 million years and wrote, “Guys… .” [Twitter, 7/5/23]

Grabien founder and radio producer Tom Elliott: “CNN: Did you know the world started 150 years ago?” [Twitter, 7/5/23]

Importantly, the fact that the current modeling used to measure the global average temperature was implemented in 1979 doesn’t mean we don’t know anything about global temperatures before then.

Paleoclimatologists use fossils and ice cores to piece together what Earth was like thousands of years ago. While precise measurements are all but impossible, there is evidence to suggest average global temperatures haven’t been this high in over 100,000 years.

One thing paleoclimatologists know for sure, according to Richard Alley, a geosciences professor at Pennsylvania State University, is that if it was hotter in the past, it was naturally caused, while “the current rise is not natural, but caused by us.”

Community notes has a shaky track record

Crowdsourced notes on Twitter — a feature Elon Musk expanded in 2022 — have proved useful at times for rapidly adding highly visible context. But these notes aren’t always helpful for adding context to highly politicized issues like climate change and race, and can invite bigoted and misleading notes.

Twitter approves notes based on values it gives to each individual user that weighs in, not how many users find it helpful or unhelpful. A note can have few helpful votes and be approved; it just has to have ratings from people “with different points of view” that Twitter finds appropriate.

The values given to votes depend in part on how users have voted on community notes in the past. But some have pointed out that measuring “diversity” in this way can be flawed. Considering how Musk has empowered right-wing users in other ways, the balance of those who write community notes in the first place could potentially be ideologically skewed. In this case, the community note itself lacked key information and would have been more helpful if it specified that this was likely a 120,000-year record.

While significant, one broken record is far from the only indicator that global heating is a major threat

The argument over how to phrase this worrying benchmark is somewhat arbitrary in the scheme of global climate impacts.

The fact that July 6 was the hottest day on record shouldn’t bring the issue urgency by itself. The fact that over 100 people recently died in Mexico due to extreme heat, wildfires in Canada have burned an area the size of Virginia, and several major U.S. cities are still bracing for unhealthy air quality due to wildfire smoke should motivate the media to pay attention and lawmakers to act.

Right-wing media regularly respond to coverage of extreme heat with loud climate change denial. In July 2022, as a heat wave shook Western Europe, killing tens of thousands of people, climate skeptics responded with gaslighting and insisted everything was fine. How hot does it have to get and how many people have to die for skeptics to accept the fact that climate change is driving dangerously high temperatures? There is seemingly no limit.

fox News’ Brian Kilmeade acknowledged on Thursday that federal regulations may be necessary to protect people and the environment, a rare admission on a network that has pushed for mass deregulation for decades. Kilmeade, who co-hosts Fox & Friends, made the comments while discussing the East Palestine, Ohio, train derailment and its aftermath.

“I knew nothing about these derailment numbers,” Kilmeade said. “I'm stunned by it – that we have thousands of derailments all the time and how costly it is, and how they're not kept up and maybe the regulation needs to be there"

fox News has long vilified federal regulations as governmental overreach, and needless red tape that eats into corporate profits. In 2011, the network launched Regulation Nation, a series that would “expose how excessive laws are drowning American businesses.” The series was the brainchild of then-Fox News President Roger Ailes, who said at the time that bureaucrats “draw up regulations totry to ruin your life.” [vid]

That same year, Fox News also waged a full-on war against the Environmental Protection Agency, and continues to argue against environmental regulations, including in its so-called straight news programs.

More recently, Fox News personalities and their guests have railed against federal regulations for the oil industry, argued that federal regulations are a way to divide families, blamed regulations that purport to limit police violence for resulting in the police killing of Tyre Nichols, and pushed for further deregulation of the cryptocurrency market, just to name a few examples. Fox News and other cable networks also largely ignored the Trump administration’s broad deregulatory agenda to benefit massive polluters in the early weeks of the Covid-19 pandemic.

**Television coverage of East Palestine was scant and decontextualized, including on Fox News, immediately after the derailment, with only**3% of coverage mentioning the decadeslong deregulatory push by the rail industry. The Obama administration attempted to make more effective train brakes mandatory following a series of derailments in 2014, which the industry fought against, effectively hollowing out the proposed rules. In 2018, the Trump administration completely repealed the regulations.

Panelists on Tuesday morning's edition of Fox & Friends threw a fit about M&M's announcing its new spokesperson – actress Maya Rudolph – and then transitioned into a diatribe regarding the energy-saving feature that Microsoft offers on its Xbox Series X.

As GamesRadar explained in December 2022, "using Xbox Series X standby sleep mode will boot up your console almost instantly and will even run at reduced power when off to do things in the background. However, this obviously slowly chews through more power, so you can sacrifice a bit of convenience for a more economical option in the form of the energy-saving Shut-down mode."

The Vergealso noted the monetary savings that users can generate by using the console's expedited shutdown.

READ MORE: 'Fox News in Spanish': The new right-wing media outlet courting Latino voters

This struck a nerve with conservative Fox News anchor Ainsley Earhardt and host Jimmy Failla, who claimed that Xbox's manufacturer is trying to brainwash kids into "woke" beliefs about climate change.

Earhardt:

Well, M&M's putting its woke spokescandies on hold. The candy giant most notably changing the green M&M's white go-go boots to sneakers. Remember that last year? Well in a statement, the company now is saying, 'We've decided to take an infinite pause from the spokescandies. In their place, we are proud to announce a spokesperson America can agree on: the beloved Maya Rudolph.' Remember her from 'Saturday Night Live' and from 'Loot, and also from 'Bridesmaids.' She's really funny. And another funny guy Jimmy Failla, who hosts Fox Across America, on Fox News Radio and Fox Nation joins us now.

Failla:

Hey, hey, hey. Be honest, did you book me for this story because I look like I get paid in M&M's? Tell the truth, Ainsley, come clean with me. There is a really valuable message here for companies around the world: If it ain't woke, don't fix it. And what I mean by that is M&M's injected a social justice initiative into a bag of candy and nobody had asked for this initiative. People don't go to candy to get identity politics. They go to candy to get love handles. They go because they want to eat and escape the day. I mean, that's what candy always was to kids. It was like alcohol for kids. You're having a rough day, you bag down some M&M's, you get on with your life. But in this instance, they found themselves in the middle of a little bit of a social justice firestorm. But thankfully the customer base pushed back as they should.

Earhardt:

What do you think about Maya Rudolph being the new spokesperson?

READ MORE: Far-right blasts Fox News’ Sean Hannity for saying he never believed Trump’s election lie

Failla:

I think they blew this! No no. Maya Rudolph is actually, she's really funny and I really genuinely like her a lot. But I still think they blew it. They should have leaned into the fact that this is some of the most fattening content on Earth and gotten, like, me, okay? I am a good spokesperson. If I wasn't on cable news, I would be a before model, okay? That's who you want pushing your product, it gives everyone permission to eat this candy. Maya Rudolph makes me want to go to the gym; she looks great. You need a Jimmy Failla, that's all I am saying.

Earhardt:

So Xbox is also announced they're going woke too in – you know, because of climate change – that they are adding a new feature to their default settings. So if you own an Xbox you can upload this new program and it will turn off after so long to save the environment, the power. And also they are saying the energy saving shut down feature is going to have a slower boot time. Ted Cruz writes on Twitter, first gas stoves and then your coffee, now you're gunning for my Xbox.

Failla:

Ah ha ha ha ha. Isn't it crazy though? Like when we were kids you were a rebel if you had like a leather jacket and a pack of cigarettes. Now you have like a full-powered Xbox and you're eating pizza rolls on a gas stove. I mean it's crazy what they're doing. But we understand what this is. It's not that it's actually going to offset emissions. The level of reduction is infinitesimal. But they are trying to recruit your kids into climate politics at an earlier age. Make them climate conscious now.

Earhardt:

Yeah, I didn't think of that, you're right. They are going after the children.

Failla:

Of course they are. But again, what's the point of video games? It's for kids to be kids. Now you sit down, pick up a controller and they're like by the way the world is on fire. You know what I mean? You just want to play the game. And if they cared, I think they would stop making games that kept kids trapped in the house. My kid played so much Xbox during the lockdowns he didn't know there was a lockdown until two months in.

During the final weekend of the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference, known as COP27, two Fox News programs invited longtime climate denier Marc Morano to discuss the conference and link it to a conspiracy theory about the Great Reset.

As Media Matters wrote last week, adherents to the Great Reset conspiracy theory absurdly believe that global elites are using climate change policies in order to crush individual freedoms and install a global dictatorial government. Morano is a key driver of the climate denial components of this conspiracy theory. We also noted that given the high-profile nature of COP27 and the presence of numerous world leaders there, this conspiracy theory would proliferate within right-wing discussions of the conference.

And now, the most-watched cable news network in the U.S. has prominently featured the false claims in its discussions around COP27.

On the November 12 edition of Unfiltered with Dan Bongino, Morano stated that world leaders want to “use the COVID template to fight climate, i.e. authoritarianism, you don’t have a say, democracy goes to die.” He also falsely downplayed the health threats associated with climate change, wrongly dismissed the need for climate action as too expensive, and directly referred to COP27 as “the Great Reset summit.”

Host Dan Bongino also brought up a key tenet of the Great Reset conspiracy theory, which is that climate change is all about control. He stated that the conference is “a totalitarian way to control things. This has nothing to do with climate science."

MORANO (FOUNDER, CLIMATEDEPOT.COM): I'm here in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, at this conference. And not only is the World Economic Forum here, the home of the Great Reset — they were on the panel with John Kerry when he went to use the COVID template to fight climate, i.e. authoritarianism, you don’t have a say, democracy goes to die when they talk like that. But the World Health Organization was also here to morph COVID and climate together by declaring climate a massive public health threat. Despite the fact, Dan, that climate-related deaths have dropped 99% in the last hundred years and they’ve declined due to wealth creation, and development, infrastructure, and fossil fuels. So, this is very scary. This is John Kerry. Al Gore also is here. Along with John Kerry he's pushing his climate trace app that’s going to be tracing all individual CO2 contributors globally. Remember, humans inhale oxygen; we exhale CO2. So they’re modeling a track and trace app for CO2 to go after businesses and agriculture. This is the Great Reset summit here in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.

DAN BONGINO (FOX HOST): Marc, and you’ve been sounding the alarm about this forever. This is all about control. This has nothing to do with science. When the vax started to lose effectiveness against transmission, they almost doubled down on mandates. Their push for digital ID, digital currencies, you know, CO2 monitors — this is just a totalitarian way to control people. This has nothing to do with climate science.

MORANO: It has nothing to do. Here’s how absurd it is. Goldman Sachs economist two weeks ago said on CNBC that we’ve spent almost $4 trillion to reduce fossil fuels 1%. And so, and you’d would think they’d look at that and say solar and wind are failing, you cannot replace fossil fuels at any scale they’re talking. Al Gore comes this week along with John Kerry and wants private industry to spent $4 trillion per year to fight climate change.

That’s how insane this is. It's almost like the old, you know, socialism never failed, it wasn't done correctly in the Soviet Union, it wasn’t done correctly in Venezuela, it wasn’t done correctly in Eastern Europe, it wasn’t done correctly in Cuba. They are now literally looking at this and saying all the failure we see everywhere is more of a reason to double down. And this is what’s scary, Dan: You have every major corporation listed as quote “main partners” at this U.N. climate Great Reset summit including IBM, Google, Coca-Cola, Bank of America.

The next morning, on Fox & Friends Sunday, Morano again fearmongered about the Great Reset at COP27. In addition to claiming that climate change is all about control, he also invoked the idea of lockdowns and the idea that global elites want to disrupt agriculture — also key tenets of the Great Reset conspiracy theory. He closed the interview by insinuating, again, that COP27 is all about the Great Reset, and that these global elites want to increase their power at the expense of human liberties.

CAMPOS-DUFFY (FOX HOST): President Joe Biden pledging $150 million to advance Africa's resilience to climate change. This despite 146 million people across the country going hungry. ClimateDepot.com publisher, and author of The Great Reset: Global Elites and The Permanent Lockdown, Marc Morano joins us now. Marc, always great to have you on the show. So 34 million Africans are actually in danger of famine right now. So, why are they offering them money for climate policies and initiatives and not food?

MARC MORANO (FOUNDER, CLIMATEDEPOT.COM): This is an incredible situation. They have it completely backwards. Instead of looking at all the problems in the world, and saying we need more food production, we need high-yield agriculture, they look at it and say we need to stop climate change. And this whole agenda, they have harmed Africa, first of all through COVID policy —

CAMPOS-DUFFY: Yes.

MORANO: — and this is chiefly occurring through COVID lockdowns, which, by the way, the World Health Organization was there, the World Economic Forum was at this U.N. Climate summit where Biden was. And they're pushing more response to climate as the same template as COVID, which means essentially bypassing democracy. But what the Biden administration’s done, they’re allowing this to happen in Africa. We've seen it in the Netherlands. They're collapsing modern high-yield agriculture. They’re doing it in Australia, in Canada. They’re making food more expensive, creating shortages. They’re doing the same thing in transportation and doing the same thing in energy, all in the name of climate change.

…

CAMPOS-DUFFY: Marc, really quickly, yes or no. Is this summit, and all of the initiatives that they're pushing, even thistracking app — is it about the environment, or is it about the Great Reset and population control?

MORANO: This is all about increasing their power, imposing their vision, and their vision is population control, economic control, and basically civil liberties control of every human on the earth. That is really what this conference is about. That is what the United Nations teaming up with the World Economic Forum is all about.

Later in the program, host Rachel Campos-Duffy again brought up the Great Reset. After a discussion about Biden meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping, Campos-Duffy stated that Morano “wrote a book about climate change and how it is part of the Great Reset. It is really fantastic, being very clear what this is about. Climate change is not about the climate. He actually proves it is not really affecting the climate and certainly not worth the trillions of investment that the world and especially America have made in that. But he says it’s about the Great Reset, it’s about control, and it’s ultimately about population control.”

fuck your feelings: [cspan book TV had several on slavery eg UVA?] free exge of idea (free mkt in the gift shop? buy it or not, or buy and burn it.

Fox News host Rachel Campos-Duffy lashed out on Sunday because she said she was made to feel "ashamed" and "guilty" after visiting the home of former President Thomas Jefferson and learning about how he owned slaves.

During a discussion on Fox & Friends, host Pete Hegseth complained about how the "whole tone" at Jefferson's Monticello home has changed to focus on his slave ownership.

"It's overwhelmingly negative!" Hegseth exclaimed. "You go to visit the legacy of Thomas Jefferson and you learn about what a terrible person Thomas Jefferson was."

Hegseth said that one visitor noted that "half of the comments on Jefferson were critical."

Campos-Duffy recounted her visit to Monticello.

"I visited many of these homes," she recalled. "And that is definitely what I picked up from all of this, that there is a reorienting, reconstructing of the history to basically make sure that the idea that they had slaves is on the same level as what they did for our country."

"There are slaves across human history," the Fox News host continued. "I get that. It's a terrible history we should talk about but we should not feel guilty or ashamed of our leaders when we go and visit the people who brought us the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence. You leave feeling that way."

Campos-Duffy complained that "anti-racism" books could be found in the gift shop at Jefferson's home.

"These were great men as far as their ideas go but they were able to build this on the backs of slaves and we honor that," co-host Joey Jones chimed in. "And we talk about that. That's different than re-writing the importance of Jefferson, the importance of Washington or whoever it may be. And why have Monticello at all if you're only going to use it for grievance?"

Jones argued that liberal leaders are not "perfect" either.

"Socialists," Campos-Duffy quipped. "You come away thinking how terrible this country is."

"Where's all this coming from?" she asked. "The homes of these presidents are being populated -- this is avery diabolical plan on the part of the left. So what they've done is they've taken their donors on the left and they've populated the boards of these estates with leftists."

"Don't look over here at all the amazing things that Thomas Jefferson unleashed," Hegseth agreed. "It's always about inclusivity. It's the buzzword they use. And we fall into the trap! Because good, earnest historians who take care of Monticello sit there and they go, 'Oh, you're right. You know what? We haven't included enough about the fact that he was a slave owner. So let's include more of that.' And then the ideologues come in with their money and say, let's make it all about that!"

"And then you get kids coming through thinking Thomas Jefferson was a bad guy," he remarked. "We get accused of wanting to 'whitewash' or not talk about that. We will talk about that. We know that. That's a real deal. But making it about America being an evil place is when we get into the realm of a cultural revolution."

Fox & Friends" host **Brian Kilmeade** is furious over YouTube's decision to ban videos that promote the lie that there was widespread election fraud that handed the election to Joe Biden.

"Big tech YouTube is the latest to decide that any conversations or postings about election fraud is not going to be posted on YouTube," Kilmeade ranted.

Kilmeade has the facts wrong.

"More than a month after the U.S. presidential election," the AP reports, "YouTube says it will start removing newly uploaded material that claims widespread voter fraud or errors changed the outcome."

Kilmeade wrongly claimed YouTube was banning "any conversations or postings about election fraud."

"I'm very disappointed," Kilmeade continued, claiming an interview he conducted would be banned. "But in all seriousness, it's unbelievable the way these big tech companies are flat out taking the incoming and being biased because they just want the outcome. The outcome is Joe Biden is president," he admitted. "And this is more of an example of them doing it."

Shannon Grove, minority leader of the California State Senate, has been under quarantine — or at least she was supposed to be — after coming in close contact with a fellow Republican who tested positive for COVID-19: California State Sen. Brian Jones, who was diagnosed on August 26. But that didn’t prevent Grove from attending a crowded Christian music event and rally in Sacramento on Sunday, September 6 — and according to Washington Post reporter Tim Elfrink, she wasn’t wearing a protective face mask.

The event, billed as Let Us Worship, was supposed to allow up to 1000 attendees and enforce social distancing measures, but according to the California Highway Patrol, around 3000 people showed up. Videos of the event, Elfrink noted, “showed virtually no social distancing or masks in the crowd”— and California Gov. Gavin Newsom is warning that the concert could turn out to be a superspreader event.

“It does not help to have thousands and thousands of people not practicing physical distancing or social distancing not wearing masks,” Newsom warned.

Sean Feucht, the musician and Christian fundamentalist who organized the Let Us Worship event, has been highly critical of social distancing measures — and when he appeared on Fox News’ “Fox and Friends,” he claimed that city officials were discriminating against Christianity. What he didn’t tell Fox News is that he might have been responsible for a superspreader event.

Grove, according to Elfrink, “took the stage on Sunday and spoke at length to the crowd — while failing to wear a mask.” Elfrink also notes that California health officials are “urging anyone who attended the prayer event to self-quarantine and monitor for symptoms.”

According to Sacramento County Health Director Peter Beilenson, the Let Us Worship event violated the safety guidelines that California has had in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Beilenson, speaking to the Los Angeles Times, said of the event, “Everyone was piled up. That’s a problem. It’s not a matter of if there will be an outbreak from this, it’s how big.”

*Fox & Friends* was behind Trump's deceitful tweet about an Iran order to the Navy

Fox & Friends ran a series of reports Wednesday morning about Iran launching its first military satellite into orbit. Those reports also referenced an April 15 incident in which 11 Iranian military vessels “repeatedly conducted dangerous and harassing approaches” to U.S. Navy ships in international waters in the Persian Gulf, according to a Navy press release.

After those reports, and after Donald Trump sent a series of tweets referencing other parts of the program, Trump tweeted that, "I have instructed the United States Navy to shoot down and destroy any and all Iranian gunboats if they harass our ships at sea."

It turns out that Trump's tweet was a lie. The New York Times reported, “a tweet does not constitute a military order, and a Defense Department official said the Navy had not received any formal policy directive from Mr. Trump ordering it to change its criteria for opening fire on Iranian gunboats.”

JEDEDIAH BILA (CO-HOST): I want to ask you, though, about the president. What can the president do at a time like this? Because obviously he has an interest in stabilizing the market. You see now if you take a look the Dow is down. The S&P [500] is down. It's very concerning to a lot of people out there. What should he be saying?

STUART VARNEY (FOX BUSINESS HOST): He should be reassuring the American people as he has been doing that this administration can take care of and contain this virus. Remember, no deaths. OK. We got new cases, but no deaths. We've quarantined people. We're testing people. That's what the president should be telling us, and he is telling us that.

Personally, I get really annoyed when I hear the Democrats, going after the president, try to make out that the virus is his fault. And they are doing it for electoral advantage and I think that is absolutely reprehensible. You need an opposition, you need to hold the president accountable. But what they are doing is denigrating the administration's efforts. Trying to tear down the president, not for the benefit of the country, but for their electoral benefit.

BILA: We actually have some sound --

DEAN CAIN (CO-HOST): Exactly.

BILA: -- related right to what you are saying.

CAIN: He spoke about this last night in Charleston, South Carolina.

[CLIP]

DONALD TRUMP (PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES): Politicizing the coronavirus.

...

You say how is President Trump doing? They go, "Oh, not good, not good." They have no clue. They don't have any clue. They can't even count their votes in Iowa. They can't even count.

...

[djt]: One of my people came up to me and said, "Mr. President, they tried to beat you on Russia, Russia, Russia. That didn't work out too well." They couldn't do it. They tried the impeachment hoax. They tried it over and over. They have been doing it since you got in. It's all turning. They lost. It's all turning. Think of it. Think of it. And this is their new hoax.

[END CLIP]

PETE HEGSETH (CO-HOST): He can't resist.

VARNEY: Look, I agree with that. Look, Russia, Russia, Russia. Impediment to justice. Impeachment, and now the virus. One thing after another to denigrate and slime our president. Utterly wrong.

HEGSETH: You see the misinformation, too. Democrats -- the AP had to fact check Democrats who were saying that the president's cut the CDC budget which it hasn't been reduced under the Trump presidency. They're seizing on anything.

VARNEY: And you have this irrational criticism of the president. [Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez], for example, denigrating Vice President [Mike] Pence who is in charge of the containment effort saying he is a science denier. Please. Come on.

BILA: Yeah. And the reality, I mean, the truth is --

VARNEY: And Senator [Elizabeth] Warren was talking about the mess of this containment effort. Excuse me, show me the mess.

BILA: Yeah.

VARNEY: I don't see any deaths. I see a good strong containment effort.

BILA: Yeah, the truth is, whatever the president would have done, the media would have been there to criticize him.

After enabling right-wing propaganda, Facebook hires a Fox News veteran in a key news role

Facebook has reportedly named Jennifer Williams, who was a longtime Fox & Friends senior producer, to head video strategy for the social media giant’s forthcoming Facebook News. As Facebook executives plan a shift in the way the nation consumes news that will almost certainly impact the 2020 presidential election, they are staffing up with an 18-year veteran of the right-wing cable network that effectively serves as President Donald Trump’s personal mouthpiece.

While Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been holding cozy dinners with right-wing media figures and meeting with Trump in the White House, his company has stocked its powerful Washington, D.C., office with Republican political operatives, hired a former Republican senator to produce a report on Facebook’s alleged liberal bias, encouraged its fact-checking consortium to partner with Tucker Carlson’s toxic Daily Caller website, commissioned research on opponents that was steeped in anti-Semitic tropes, and altered and selectively enforced its ad policies in ways that will likely benefit Trump’s reelection campaign. Just last week, it was reported that Facebook was allowing a major Trump super PAC to run ads featuring a lie that the platform's own fact-checking partners had debunked.

Facebook responded to criticism of the hire by saying that Williams worked at Fox & Friends before Trump was president. This, while true, is absurd: Fox & Friends was terrible for years.

Fox News rages at criticism of ‘fascist’ Hallmark movies

Written by Igor Derysh / Salon December 28, 2019

After Amanda Marcotte called Hallmark Christmas movies “fascist propaganda,” the co-hosts of “Fox & Friends” accused Salon’s senior politics writer of attacking “American values.”

The trio of hosts took issue with Marcotte’s op-ed from earlier this week, which criticized the Hallmark Channel for enforcing a white, Christian and heteronormative worldview within its film canon. The hosts brought on frequent Hallmark leading man Dean Cain, who accused Marcotte of waging a war against Christmas. In truth, she had advocated for diversity in the network’s holiday line-up.

Responding to a controversy over Hallmark pulling ads promoting the wedding company Zola which showed a lesbian couple kissing, Marcotte slammed the network for claiming that it was “committed to diversity and inclusion.”

“Running down this year’s schedule of Christmas movie offerings is like a trip into an uncanny valley of shiny-teethed, blow-dried heteronormative whiteness, with only a few token movies with characters of color. It’s like watching ‘The Stepford Wives,’ but scarier, since the evil plot to replace normal people with robots is never actually revealed,” Marcotte wrote. “Even in Nazi Germany, the majority of movies approved by the Nazi minister of propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, were escapist and feather-light, with a Hallmark movie-style emphasis on the importance of ‘normality.’”

“Ultimately, there is probably no way to square the claim to believe in ‘diversity’ with fascistic impulse that guides the current crop of Hallmark movies, which center always around these frankly MAGA-style ideas about what constitutes ‘real’ America,” Marcotte added. “The best that Hallmark can do is some token ‘diversity’ that wipes out most of what makes people actually diverse. Their money comes from selling a vision of America that increasingly authoritarian conservatives wish to believe once existed and can be restored again — an America that excludes most of an increasingly urban, racially diverse, cosmopolitan nation.”

The hosts of Fox & Friends brought on Cain, who is best known for his portrayal of Superman on the short-lived ABC series “Lois & Clark,” to respond to Marcotte’s criticisms. Cain, who co-host Ed Henry labeled the “Hallmark heartthrob,” called those opinions not only “insane” but also “ridiculous.”

“It’s really terrifying to wake up the day after Christmas to find out that Santa is a Nazi,” Cain said. “It was so ridiculous I thought it was a terrible Adam Schiff parody. Then I went and read it, and it’s insane.” (Marcotte did not call Santa a Nazi in her piece.)

Cain further claimed that “if you want to know who the fascist is look who wrote the article,” alleging that Marcotte was “telling you what you should believe” and “how society should be” when she only called on the network to reflect the diversity of its own audience.

“It’s just completely wrong to say they’re Nazi propaganda or fascist propaganda,” Cain said. “The Hallmark Channel is the farthest thing from that.”

The co-hosts then read an excerpt from a statement from Salon’s Editor-in-Chief Erin Keane, which encouraged viewers to “enjoy your holiday fare, but do so with a critical eye.”

“We recommend that anyone interested in this article just come to Salon and read it for yourself,” Keane said in the complete statement. “While a lot of people watch the empty fluff of the Hallmark Channel for fun, it’s important to understand the way false nostalgia operates and how it can be used as a weapon to marginalize people as “different” for being LGBTQ, non-white, or being women with career ambitions.”

Cain shook his head as the hosts read the quote before accusing Salon of attacking Christmas, a holiday which was marked in numerous articles on its website.

“They’re not saying anything that means anything,” Cain said. “It’s just a bald-faced attack on Christmas and love. They’re the haters. They’re hating on Hallmark. I’m sure they hate Fox News.”

“It’s a pathetic attack on American values and cultural institutions,” Pavlich opined.

However, the segment ignored the fact that Marcotte’s words came in response to a right-wing pressure campaign, which demanded that Hallmark remove an ad showing a lesbian couple kissing. The network pulled the ad, claiming that it was against its policy to show ads featuring “overt public displays of affection,” which Marcotte pointed out was hypocritical given its own holiday line-up.

Her commentary further criticized the network for betraying its “commitment to diversity” by featuring a holiday lineup, which is almost entirely white.

“It’s critical to be mindful of the role that Hallmark movies are actually playing in our society,” Marcotte wrote. “The very fact that they’re presented as harmless fluff makes it all the more insidious, the way they work to enforce very narrow, white, heteronormative, sexist, provincial ideas of what constitutes ‘normal.’”

I've Studied the Trump-Fox Feedback Loop for Months. It’s Crazier Than You Think.

By MATTHEW GERTZ January 05, 2018

Matthew Gertz is a senior fellow at Media Matters for America.

On Tuesday night, I, along with many Americans, was shocked when President Donald Trump tweeted that his “Nuclear Button” is “much bigger & more powerful” than North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un's.

Having spent the past three months monitoring Trump’s Twitter feed professionally, I also had a good sense of why this spectacle was unfolding. After watching a recording of the previous few minutes of Fox News, my hunch was confirmed: The president was live-tweeting the network’s coverage.

Everyone has a theory about Trump’s hyperaggressive early morning tweetstorms. Some think they are a deliberate ploy the president uses to distract the press from his administration’s potential weaknesses, or to frame the public debate to his liking. Others warn his rapid shifts from one topic to another indicate mental instability.

But my many hours following the president’s tweets for Media Matters for America, the progressive media watchdog organization, have convinced me the truth is often much simpler: The president is just live-tweeting Fox, particularly the network’s Trump-loving morning show, Fox & Friends.

It’s no secret, of course, that the president likes to tweet about what he sees on TV. Thanks to diligent reporting from the White House beat, we know Trump often watches several hours of cable news each day via the “Super TiVo” he had installed at the White House. And journalists at CNN, the Washington Post, New York magazine, among others, have compiled lists of Trump tweets they believe were inspired by Fox.

But here’s what is shocking: After comparing the president’s tweets with Fox's coverage every day since October, I can tell you that the Fox-Trump feedback loop is happening far more often than you think. There is no strategy to Trump’s Twitter feed; he is not trying to distract the media. He is being distracted. He darts with quark-like speed from topic to topic in his tweets because that’s how cable news works.

Here’s what’s also shocking: A man with unparalleled access to the world’s most powerful information-gathering machine, with an intelligence budget estimated at $73 billion last year, prefers to rely on conservative cable news hosts to understand current events.

I have long known that the president is a Fox & Friends superfan—well before he ran for office, he had a weekly guest spot on the program for years, and since his election, he has regularly held the program’s co-hosts up as model journalists. But one morning in October, a colleague pointed out that Trump had tweeted an endorsement of a book minutes after the author, appearing on Fox & Friends to promote the work, praised him. Curious if there was a pattern, I examined the rest of the president’s tweets from that morning, and found that several others seemed to line up with the program, reacting or commenting on various topics raised by the broadcast—from kneeling NFL players to negotiating with Democrats over immigration—without ever explicitly mentioning the show itself.

The results were so striking that my morning routine quickly became a shadow of the president’s. I check Trump’s Twitter feed on my way into the office every day. If the president is tweeting—those tweets often beginning soon after Fox & Friends’ 6 a.m. start—when I get to my desk I pull up footage from Fox’s programming on our internal video archive, frequently comparing it with footage from CNN and MSNBC. I use Twitter as my notepad, sharing my reasoning with my followers as I go. When I change my mind about whether a Trump tweet corresponds to a particular segment, I explain why and show my work. Around 9 a.m., when Fox & Friends’ co-hosts sign off, the president usually moves on to the business of running the most powerful nation in the history of the world, and I can move on as well. (Well, until the next tweet.)

Sometimes the president’s tweets don’t correspond to cable news coverage—his boasting about the economy, for example, is usually untethered from the news cycle. Other times, they echo cable news explicitly. For example, Trump might identify a guest who was just on Fox & Friends, quote from a caption that appears on the screen, or even tag the program’s Twitter handle, making my task easier.

And sometimes the tweets fall into a gray area, covering the same broad topic as Fox’s programming but without any specific identifiers. Then I need to fall back on inference, and in those cases, it helps when Trump has tweeted several times over the morning. Do the topics of a series of tweets match the order Fox discussed them? Does one tweet in a series have a strong tie to the network, suggesting that the other tweets were also reactions to Fox?

On Tuesday morning, for instance, on his first morning back in Washington after an 11-day vacation, the president tweeted what I believe were five consecutive tweets based on Fox’s programming, though he specifically referenced Fox & Friends in only one of them. His tweet urging the imprisonment of Huma Abedin followed a Fox segment on the former Hillary Clinton aide. When he tweeted that “it was just reported” there had been no commercial aviation deaths in 2017, and took credit, the report he cited was from Fox & Friends.

But not all of the Trump tweets match with Fox segments that praise the president and thrash his perceived enemies. There are some random ones, too.

Remember that strange moment in October when Trump tried to tweet happy birthday to the country music artist Lee Greenwood? He tagged the wrong handle, deleted the tweet, and sent out a corrected version while the rest of Twitter tried to figure out what was going on. The event is easier to understand if you know that about an hour before Trump sent his initial tweet, Fox & Friends reported it was Greenwood’s birthday:

The timing, by the way, doesn’t always perfectly line up. That’s because, from my observations, Trump also uses his DVR vigorously, often starting at the beginning of a program even if it started hours before he sits down to watch it, then fast-forwarding through commercials and segments that don’t interest him.

Trump may not be trying to divert the media, but the media definitely gets distracted. Trump’s morning tweets upend the news cycle, with cable news producers and assignment editors redistributing time and resources to cover his latest comments.Statements from the president are inherently newsworthy. But the result is certainly a positive one for Fox: The network’s partisan programming gets validation from the president, and forces the rest of the press to cover Fox’s obsessions whether they are newsworthy or not.

In December, Mediaite put the co-hosts of Fox & Friends at the top of its “Most Influential in Media” list, pointing out “the topics they cover essentially set the national agenda for the rest of the day.” Mediaite is not wrong. Soon after White House counselor Kellyanne Conway congratulated the co-hosts for the designation during an interview on the show, Trump weighed in, urging the “many Fake News Hate Shows” to “study your formula for success!” He had been watching.

I had been, too.

on Fox News on Sunday, Robert Jeffress — one of President Donald Trump’s far-right white evangelical sycophants — asserted that Trump’s impeachment could cause “a Civil War-like fracture” in the United States. Trump repeated Jeffress’ assertion on Twitter — and got an angry response from a fellow Republican: Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois.

Jeffress, pastor at the First Baptist Church in Dallas, is a prominent figure on the Christian Right. And during his Sunday appearance on Fox News’ “Fox and Friends,” Jeffress insisted to co-hosts Pete Hegseth and Jedediah Bila that Trump has done nothing to deserve impeachment and attacked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for supporting an impeachment inquiry — stressing, “I do want to make this prediction this morning: if the Democrats are successful in removing the president from office, I’m afraid it will cause a Civil War-like fracture in this nation from which this country will never heal.” On Twitter, Trump quoted Jeffress and zeroed right in on the Civil War

Fox News is gearing up for a war. Houthi rebels in Yemen claimed credit for a drone attack that took out a lot of Saudi Arabia's oil processing capability. In the days since, Trump has announced that American troops are deploying to Saudi Arabia. It is clear that Fox News personalities want war.

Fox & Friends co-hosts pushed Trump to take direction against Iran this week. It was clear when Tucker Carlson talked Trump out of striking Iran months ago that hawks at the network would only try again -- especially since the approach of Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is only making the underlying situation worse. As I wrote in July, it's only a matter of time before Trump starts thinking about how the media loves a wartime president.

Christian pastors praise Trump for speech on ‘religious persecution’ — and ditching UN Summit on ‘imaginary’ climate crisis

Two well-known Christian pastors appeared on “**Fox & Friends**” Monday morning to praise President Donald Trump’s decision to deliver a speech Monday at the United Nations on “religious persecution” – while snubbing a climate change summit to do so.

Hate ground head **Tony Perkins** was joined by **Dr. Robert Jeffress**, a Fox News contributor who had plenty of praise for the President. Both men are among America’s top anti-LGBTQ activists and both are closely tied to Trump and his administration.

Dr. Jeffress called climate change an “imaginary problem” while heralding Trump’s “guts” for ignoring today’s UN summit on the crisis.

“This is the first time any leader of a nation has addressed the UN on religious persecution,” Jeffress said excitedly. “A third of the world is living under religious persecution. 80 percent of it is against Christians,” Jeffress claimed. “It is a remarkable thing that this president would skip a UN climate change summit on an imaginary problem to address the very real problem of global persecution of believers.”

“I mean, think about it: what president in history would have the guts to do what President Trump is doing?” Jeffress asked, laughing because, he said, “it’s absolutely infuriating” Trump’s “enemies” while “energizing his base.”

One day after a rally put on by the violent far-right group was met with protests by anti-fascist activists, Fox & Friends Sunday ran segments fearmongering about anti-fascist activists (“antifa”).

In these two segments, Fox News correspondent Griff Jenkins downplayed the death of Heather Heyer and claimed that Heyer was affiliated with antifa.

Jenkins would go on to suggest that new laws were needed in order to prosecute such anti-fascist protesters in Oregon as domestic terrorists. Jenkins would go on to portray all 13 arrests yesterday in Portland as being related only to antifa, even though violent gang the Proud Boys and other far-right extremists demonstrated as well (reports are still unclear as to who was arrested for what).

Heyer, a civil rights activist and a legal assistant, was killed after the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville by a white supremacist targeting a crowd of counter-protesters.

This comes as Fox's link to white supremacist violence is under the microscope. The manifesto left by the El Paso shooter closely mirrored white supremacist rhetoric often heard on Fox News.

Meanwhile, while Fox focuses on antifa, multiple far-right extremists have been arrested recently for threatening violence.

Fox and Friends bizarrely claims climate change is the left’s ‘religion’: It’s how they ‘control your life’

“Fox and Friends” took a swing at the very real crisis of man-made climate change Tuesday morning, with guest co-host Pete Hegseth saying it’s not a “real threat,” like ISIS.

Co-host Ainsley Earhardt mocked Senator Bernie Sanders for saying climate change is a greater threat to U.S. national security than ISIS (the DoD has made similar observations). Hegseth, who once was on President Donald Trump’s short list to head the Department of Veterans Affairs, launched into a rant.

“The Left says that all the time. This is what they believe – it is their religion,” Hegseth told viewers. They want to fight the weather, the rest of us want to deal with real threats that want to take away our freedom.”

Hegseth then credited President Trump with “destroying ISIS,” while acknowledging there are still “remnants” that need to be addressed. “That’s taking on a real threat directly.”

“Whether it’s hot or cold, the enemy is here, as far as liberals are concerned. It’s all about control for them. That’s why climate change is the perfect enemy. They get to control your life to deal with it, no matter what’s happening,” said Hegseth, who once said “germs are not a real thing,” while bragging he has not washed his hands in ten years.

He then went on to complain that college students aren’t “learning about radical Islam, they’re learning about environmentalism, and radical environmentalism, and they’re being told its the most important thing.”

The highly-respected website Just Security, which is based at the Reiss Center on Law and Security at New York University School of Law, last year reported that climate change “is a grave threat to national security. Indeed, it may be the threat.” They added it also “exacerbates and accelerates already existing threats.”

Inspired by a Fox & Friends segment attacking Baltimore congressional Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) and likening conditions in the city to the southern border, President Trump lashed out on Saturday, calling Baltimore a "rodent infested mess." On Sunday, Fox rushed to defend Trump. This racist mess followed Fox News inspiring (and then defending) Trump's racist statements towards Reps. Ocasio-Cortez, Pressley, Tlaib, and Omar.

Shortly after Trump's twitter rant, CNN host Victor Blackwell gave an emotional response on air, pointing out that Trump only used this type of "infestation" language when attacking minorities. The Baltimore Sunpublished a powerful editorial titled "Better to have a few rats than to be one."

There is one thing that the media must cover in relation to Trump's twitter rant. Jared Kushner operates as a slumlord in Baltimore. As ProPublica has reported: "Tenants in more than a dozen Baltimore-area rental complexes complain about a property owner who they say leaves their homes in disrepair, humiliates late-paying renters and often sues them when they try to move out. Few of them know that their landlord is the president’s son-in-law"

Fox News has unprecedented influence over President Donald Trump’s decision-making. Trump’s worldview is shaped by the hours of propagandistic and sycophantic programming he often watches in a day, as well as his private consultations with many of the network’s stars on a wide variety of topics. As a result, Fox’s commentators have at times dictated the president’s policy agenda and political strategy, harnessed the news cycle by directing his attention to their particular obsessions, provided staffers for his administration, and hand-picked the recipients of his pardons.

And now, the network is emerging as a platform that can determine who could receive hefty federal contracts.

The Washington Post reported Thursday that Trump has “alarmed” military commanders and Department of Homeland Security officials by aggressively lobbying them to grant a border wall contract to Fisher Industries, a North Dakota-based construction company whose CEO, Tommy Fisher, has regularly appeared on Fox and other conservative outlets to promote his company’s bid.

Fisher claims that his company can build a border wall both faster and cheaper than his competitors thanks to a patent-pending installation system, but the Army Corps of Engineers determined that Fisher’s design “did not meet its requirements and lacked regulatory approvals” and that the firm’s previous work on a barrier project “came in late and over budget,” the Postreported. Rejected through the procurement process, Fisher is trying to go around it through the right-wing media, a method that has allowed him to reach the president. Trump is now trying to sidestep the contracting process because, as Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) explained to the Post, he “had seen [Fisher] on television” -- specifically on Fox -- “advocating for his version of the barrier.”

Fisher has used a Fox-centric PR strategy to directly pitch the president in hopes of obtaining a federal contract, making at least 10 appearances on Fox News and its sister network, Fox Business, since January 2018, according to a Media Matters review. Programs the president regularly watches, including Fox & Friends and The Ingraham Angle, have repeatedly granted Fisher an uncritical platform to shill for his company.

Fisher’s strategy mimics that of K Street lobbyists who pay off TV pundits to promote their messages during on-air appearances and lawyers who put their clients and their relatives on Fox to ask the president for pardons.

By the time of Donald Trump’s inauguration, Roger Dow realized he had a problem. Dow, president and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association, is the tourism industry’s top lobbyist in Washington. Over the previous two years, he’d grown increasingly troubled by some unfavorable trend lines: From 2015 to 2017, the United States was one of just two leading global tourism destinations that had experienced declines in incoming international travelers. Throughout the world, the market for overseas travel was expanding, and if America could simply have retained its share of visitors, domestic businesses would have gained, according to the association’s estimates, $31 billion in revenue and added 96,000 jobs. Instead, tourists were heading to Canada or the United Kingdom. (The only other destination to decline, Turkey, had been destabilized by a failed military coup.)

The development, Dow explains, was rooted in several forces, including a stronger US dollar, economic weakness in Latin America, and dirt-cheap airfare in Europe. But there was another factor, Dow says: “the Trump effect.” The 2017 executive order blocking entry to citizens from six majority-Muslim countries, and the President’s hostile proclamations about immigration, had signaled to foreigners they weren’t welcome here, even if they only wanted to spend money in Times Square and go home.

Dow put together a plan to reverse the decline. He assembled a collection of similarly affected Washington trade groups into what became known as the Visit U.S. Coalition, and its leaders identified specific policy fixes that they believed would ease the way for foreign tourists. More important, though, Dow and his allies were hoping for a stylistic change to accompany the policy tweaks: They wanted Trump to tamp down his language so as not to scare people away. Talking tough on national security was fine, Dow says, but it had to be coupled with the message that America still welcomed visitors from abroad. “The rhetoric,” he says, “is not balanced.”

Given all of Trump’s talk about expanding the economy, Dow was convinced that the President would embrace the industry’s recommendations—if only they could reach him. And therein lay the problem. In another administration, policy and rhetoric alike might have been worked up in a bureaucracy whose officials might be in a smart lobbyist’s Rolodex. In Trump’s government, though, the rhetoric came from the President’s own gut. Sharing policy insight with an agency functionary wasn’t going to help. They had to plant their talking points in front of POTUS himself. But how?

The coalition hired S-3 Public Affairs, one of the many DC lobbying-and-media-consulting firms scrambling to adjust to the city’s new power structure. In prior years, says S-3 partner Amos Snead, the firm might have designed an “outside-in” approach—collect letters or petitions from industry backers around the country, bring them to Washington, and use the testimonials to influence lawmakers, agency officials, and other thought leaders. Trump’s Washington, Snead believed, required a different approach. He sensed there might be a more direct path into the President’s head, via one of his favorite mediums: Twitter.

Snead used a technique known as geofencing to send digital ads via Twitter, as well as Facebook and You-Tube, touting the benefits of foreign tourism. Instead of targeting the entire capital, they were aimed at the coordinates of a vanishingly small audience: the President and his top aides, wherever they happened to be. The consultants tracked Team Trump’s movements inside the Beltway and beyond. When the commander in chief was in Washington, they sent their ads to IP addresses that covered the White House and the Trump hotel. If Trump headed to his golf club in New Jersey, they beamed the ads to IP addresses there. When he went to Mar-a-Lago, they sent them to his club in Florida.

As Snead puts it, “We’re following [Trump] where he goes.”

This tactic is part of what’s known, in the parlance of the industry, as the “audience of one” strategy—and tourism boosters aren’t the only people using it. In fact, it’s become a staple of the business of Washington under the 45th President.

...

Trump marched into Washington promising to “drain the swamp,” but his administration has been great for K Street. Total spending on lobbying reached $3.4 billion in 2018—the most in eight years.

Yet just because the influence industry is swimming in cash doesn’t mean its world hasn’t been rocked. Trump’s arrival in the White House has had a profound impact on the way K Street operates, according to interviews with more than 30 lobbyists, consultants, former administration officials, and others. In prior years, lobbyists and consultants felt compelled to work officials in all corners of the federal bureaucracy when trying to shape policy. But now, with decision-making consolidated inside the Oval Office, they’ve had to rewrite their playbook.

“It’s two different worlds,” says Eric Bovim, a managing director of Signal Group, a public-affairs agency in Washington. “Under President Obama, the government was a finely tuned instrument, all the parts working together to produce a single note. You needed to work with everybody to calibrate the sound. Today, for the most part, it’s a one-man band, the President in a never-ending guitar solo on the White House lawn, overpowering all the other instruments.”

From the beginning, pressing a case with Trump was difficult for a run-of-the-mill lobbyist: Veteran GOP influencers—the Establishment—didn’t have many friends in Trump’s inner circle. With the administration struggling to fill agency positions, even many well-connected consultants and lobbyists didn’t have a lot of other corners of the government to go to for help. Instead, the focus was on Trump.

HOW DO YOU GET TRUMP TO PAY ATTENTION TO POLICY? MAKE HIM THE STAR OF A COMMERCIAL.

In the early days, influence peddlers ran ads designed to appeal to him in New York newspapers—the Times, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post—which they believed he was still reading. They also used the peculiar way that other articles got to him.

One key discovery was the story folder. During at least the first seven months of the new administration, staffers in the White House communications department compiled flattering news stories about Trump into packets, which they delivered to the President twice a day. According to a former White House aide, as the packet made its way to the Oval Office, additional officials inserted other news articles they wanted the President to read. “It would typically be, like, Stephen Miller putting his latest race-baiting story in there,” the former White House aide says.

When consultants and lobbyists learned about the folder, they saw a fresh opportunity. One Republican consultant told me he was able to plant stories favorable to his corporate clients in Breitbart News—the far-right outlet once run by Trump’s former strategist, Steve Bannon—and then pass those stories to a friend in the White House, who in turn slipped them into the daily packet destined for the Oval. “If you have a friend in there who can get something on the Resolute desk,” the consultant says, “it doesn’t really matter what the source [of the information] is anymore.”

Others try to influence the thinking of the White House officials Trump listens to. One consultant told me he has geofenced the Kalorama home of Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump with digital ads in an effort to shape their views on an issue. Beyond the White House and Trump’s hotel, S-3’s influencers also targeted power restaurants such as Central Michel Richard in case a top aide popped in for lunch.

Special interests have begun targeting Trump’s “outfluencers” as well—people like Oklahoma billionaire Harold Hamm and ex–UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage, who don’t work in the White House but are believed to have the President’s ear. One consultant went so far as to geofence the school of the child of a particular outfluencer with ads specifically designed to appeal to younger viewers. “If [the family is] sitting around the dinner table talking and the issue comes up,” the consultant told me, “I want that kid to be able to say, ‘Hey, I saw something about that.’ ”

The cornerstone of the audience-of-one strategy, though, is Trump’s love affair with television. After the election, consultants began buying commercial time during Fox & Friends, the conservative morning show that the President is known to watch religiously. But how do you get a 72-year-old man with no interest in policy to watch a commercial on ethanol subsidies? Well, the influencers decided, you find old footage of Trump discussing the issue on the campaign and make him the star of the commercial.

“The President’s favorite topic is himself,” says a Republican consultant. “What better way to get him interested in a message than by providing him with the thing that he’s most obsessed with?”

Snead used the tactic during his work for the Visit U.S. Coalition. In a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in early 2018, Trump declared to the roomful of elites that “America is open for business.” There it was—Snead’s money shot. He and his team immediately created a commercial that featured Trump saying the line. They then beamed the ad to the IP address they were using to geofence the President in Switzerland. “As soon as those words came out of his mouth,” Snead says, “we’re turning those into ads.”

The CEO has honed his pitch to appeal to the president in particular, as demonstrated by his March 5 appearance on Fox & Friends, during which co-host Ainsley Earhardt asked him to explain “why should the president, or why should his administration, choose your company?"

[vid]

Fisher first appealed to the president as a businessman, saying Trump should know that his company would do the work for less money than other companies, get it completed faster, and throw in access roads and other additions.

He went on to describe his company as “the first responder” of the industry, appealing to Trump’s well-known obsession with police officers and firefighters.

And he also tried to link the bid to one of Trump’s notable construction successes, the renovation of the Wollman Rink in Central Park in the 1980s. “I think he’ll understand,” Fisher argued, “just like the Central Park deal with the ice skating rink, if you need it done now, nothing against government bureaucracy, but it takes time, so you need an expert to come in there and do it now and do it right.”

Earhardt ended the interview by giving Trump another reason to prefer Fisher: “You might be able to build it just in time for that election, too.”

And Fox’s promotion of Fisher’s bid has not been limited to the network’s supposed “opinion” shows. On April 19, the network’s flagship “news” broadcast, Special Report, ran a packaged report that essentially served as an infomercial for Fisher’s proposal. Introduced by anchor Bret Baier and reported by national correspondent William La Jeunesse, the segment featured an interview with Fisher and credulously repeated his claims that he could construct the wall “faster, better, and cheaper."

[vid]

All of this laudatory coverage has had Fisher’s desired effect, with the president reportedly promoting the company’s bid in meetings with senior military and DHS officials and forcing them to explain “that the president could not just pick a company” to get the contract in defiance of the federal procurement process.

Fisher harnessed the incredible power of Fox’s hold on the president to get much closer than he should have to taxpayer dollars. He won’t be the last to try to do so.

horoshow talking pts?

"Fox & Friends” was very focused on God – specifically, the Christian God of the Bible – on Tuesday morning. In one segment the Fox News AM crew used the Bible to interpret the “top topics” of the day, while another focused on what the hosts and a guest claimed is the disappearance of God in America.

:{

}:

Using a week-old story about a Pennsylvania elementary school that has stopped saying, “God bless America” after the Pledge of Allegiance is read over the school’s PA system, “Fox & Friends” invited an attorney from an anti-LGBT Christian law firm on to offer his opinion.

“I’m wondering if they’re so upset about the phrase ‘God Bless America,’ is the school district there in Pennsylvania, that is frankly not too far away from where those flights went down on 9/11, are they going to get rid of the dollar bills that have in God we trust on them?” Jeremy Dys, the Deputy General Counsel for the anti-LGBT organization **First Liberty**, asked.

“Are they going to start punishing teachers for saying ‘God bless you’ to students that sneeze in the hallway? This is absurd and it should be treated as absurd. When people say ‘the grass is pink,’ it’s not based on any kind of reality, just like they say ‘God bless America is unconstitutional,’ there is no reality that supports that.”

“Fox & Friends” co-host Ainsley Earhardt was quick to weigh in.

“As a Christian my faith is extremely important to me. When I think about taking God out of America, it really saddens me because I feel like we need Him,” she said.

Earhardt appeared to suggest that less people saying “God bless America,” or invoking God’s name has somehow lead to more shootings in churches and synagogues.

“When you have shootings in synagogues, shootings in churches, and you have to get wanded before you walk in to a church now. Where have we come as a country? What’s going to happen if we continue to push this narrative to take God out of everything?”

Dys added, “I fear. I fear for our country, if we were to get rid of these things entirely.”

He called it “a danger to our society” if America gets rid of “any kind of utterance of religion in public.”

JEDEDIAH BILA (GUEST CO-HOST): What do you make of this plan? First of all, let's talk about whether it's realistic or not. Let's just look -- I want to get your response, the four-part climate framework: Start cutting pollution, whatever that means, mobilize $5 trillion over 10 years, guarantee net zero emissions by 2050, defend communities preparing for and fighting against extreme weather. So some of this sounds very vague and very nice and very idealistic. Is it practical and realistic?

MARC MORANO (CLIMATEDEPOT.COM): No. First of all, pollution, carbon dioxide, humans -- we inhale oxygen, we exhale carbon dioxide, so he's calling CO2 pollution, which it's not. No, this plan is as pie in the sky as the Green New Deal except it's a little bit more tepid. What's happened here is Beto O'Rourke is not satisfying the Democratic base. Within minutes of him releasing this plan, the Sunrise Movement, which was instrumental in the Green New Deal, is going after Beto O'Rourke for going back on his pledge from 2030 zero emissions to now 2050. They are saying that Beto's plan could result in 100 million climate refugees and tens of million dead. So that's the thanks that Beto O'Rourke gets for coming up with a lighter version of the Green New Deal and a massive federal boondoggle, just not as big a boondoggle as the Green New Deal's proposal.

In a welcome change, MSNBC had a town hall directly related to climate change. Chris Hayes talked with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) about the Green New Deal, and debunked a lot of right-wing smears. Fox News has already had a meltdown about it. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez made the sensible point that America had a massive response to thousands of Americans dying on September 11, 2001, but has not had much of a response at all to thousands of Americans dying in Puerto Rico as a result of climate-linked Hurricane Maria. Fox & Friends was furious at the comparison, with a guest even calling her "shrill" and then declaring that man-made climate change is a hoax. This entire episode matters: Fox News is driving conversation around the Green New Deal because other news outlets generally are sitting out the discussion. So it's important to call this out and have a real, serious discussion about climate change.

==

American Action Forum, a nonprofit organization with considerable ties to the fossil fuel industry, recently produced deeply flawed analysis about the cost of the Green New Deal.

Right-wing, industry-funded organization's, like AAF, exist to produce academic analysis that look and feel legitimate, but have no basis in reality. Their recent analysis that proclaimed the Green New Deal would come with the absurd price tag of "$93 trillion," or "94 trillion," was quickly shot down byPolitico, PolitiFact, and more. Because the Green New Deal at this point is just a broad outline of goals with no policy specifics, determining a cost is practically impossible. PolitiFact described the cost as "only about as strong as a clothespin in high wind."

However, these seemingly authentic analyses give license to Fox News and other right-wing outlets to amplify radical claims about the Green New Deal.

Sean Hannity, Fox & Friends co-host Ainsley Earhardt, The Daily Caller, and many others have uncritically used the industry-funded analysis to push misinformation about the Green New Deal.

Defining any attempt to address climate change off limits politically is the new climate denial. Tucker Carlson wasn't specifically talking about the Green New Deal this week, but he might as well have been, when he complained that taking action on climate change is "clearly political, not science speaking." Carlson was speaking with a longtime climate change denier.

[vid]

STEVE DOOCY (CO-HOST): We're going to go through the nine points and we're going to see how close we are getting to it. First of all, the first step is government spending and we do a lot of that, and it's massive.

TOM DEL BECCARO (FORMER CHAIRMAN, CA REPUBLICAN PARTY): Yeah. We do have massive -- we're going to spend $7.6 trillion as a society in this upcoming year, which is roughly four times what Reagan's era spent when he said government was the problem.

JEDEDIAH BILA (GUEST CO-HOST): All right, number two: Our tax systems that reduce incentives.

DEL BECCARO: Yeah. We have massive tax systems, and hallmarks of socialist societies are poor incentives where there's weak economic growth. And that comes from tax systems. Trump did a good job, beginning with the business tax code. He's got to do better with personal so we have better growth.

DOOCY: Next step, number three: Reduced growth leading to economic stagnation, and that's something the EU's seen over the last 20 years.

DEL BECARRO: Yeah, they have had zero growth over the last 20 years and government is about about 60, 70 percent of their economies. In the United States we're about 36, with regulations closer to 50. Our growth has slipped from 4 to 2 over the last 60 years. Trump's trying to revive it.

BILA: Next up, something that gives me rage: Our growing deficits.

DEL BECARRO: Yeah, this is what happens when you have massive government spending. There's no example in history of a big government that didn't have deficits and lots of taxes, and the United States is pushing the limit here. Greece was at 180 percent of the economy. We are at 106 in debt.

DOOCY: OK, next step, number five: Governments print money. Hmm, that sounds familiar.

DEL BECARRO: Yeah, no government can keep up with the spending, taxes can't do enough, so they start printing money. This is the danger zone when that sort of thing happens. We had it once in the '70s, Venezuela has it now. They have, what, 1,000,000 percent inflation this year. A million.

DOOCY: Unbelievable.

BILA: Number six: Wage and price control.

DEL BECARRO: Yeah, this all comes out of weak economic growth. That's the key here. If you have zero or less growth, you're going to have stagnation, and then you start having shortages, all these problems. We had it a little bit in the '70s. In Venezuela the stores can only be open on certain days and you can only shop on certain days.

DOOCY: That's crazy. Underground economies rise, that's happening in certain spots.

DEL BECARRO: Yeah. In the United States we had a lot of this during the Carter era. But once the engine got going under Reagan then it changed. So in Greece it's about 25 percent. Here in America it's 5 to 6 percent. That's a good and normal amount.

BILA: Number eight is a big one. Class warfare, which we're already seeing right now, frankly.

DEL BECARRO: Yeah, and that all relates to economic growth. If people can get jobs, then they start to worry about what's on their own plate and advancing. But if they can't get jobs, they look to the others and say well, they are doing too well. And if you have too much income gap or wealth gap, then it gets played up. That's where the real danger zone starts.

DOOCY: And the final step is total societal discord, which is what we're seeing right now in Venezuela. But Tom, let me ask you about this. In this country, as you look at some of those steps towards socialism. Some of them seem like we're right there. But others, we're a bit apart. Are we closer to this than we were 20 years ago?

DEL BECARRO: We are because spending is so much more. And if they went forward with something like "Medicare-for-all" and drove spending above 50 percent, then socialism starts to sound normal and comes into view. If we kill off economic growth with AOC's Green New Deal, then you're going to have this class warfare. This can be avoided. Sweden is walking away from socialism, down from 70 percent spending to 50. We can walk away from this, but it would be really dumb, really dumb, if we did the Green New Deal or "Medicare-for-all," because that would drive spending so high we would have economic stagnation and back to this class warfare.

BILA: Thanks, Tom, it's funny, when I was looking at this I was thinking about the Democratic Party platform. And I don't think their platform is going to do too well when people start realizing what the consequences of these things are.

“Get a load of this.”

That’s how “Fox & Friends” began its discussion Sunday of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s office pay scales, a topic she drew attention to in a tweet on Friday:

Leadership starts with our choices.

That’s why I decided that no one on my staff will make less than $52k/year.

It’s likely one of the highest entry-level salaries on the Hill. We pinch pennies elsewhere, but it’s worth every dime to pay a living wage.https://t.co/IxfNH4632h

— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) February 23, 2019

For “Fox & Friends,” this decision was a choice to “redistribute” the money she is given to pay staffers. In fact, it’s just distribution, not “redistribution,” which typically refers to payments and transfers made through the tax system. The hosts noted that, since Ocasio-Cortez has a fixed set of funds to pay staffers like any other lawmaker, she will have to pay people like her chief of staff a lower wage than is typical to make up for the fact that she’s paying entry-level staffers more.

“She said, ‘Everyone in my office will be paid a living wage,'” said host Peter Hagseth. “‘So I’m going to pay $15 an hour.’ Which means your entry-level intern is 52 grand, while your chief of staff, who has a very important role on a congressional office, now is capped at 80. As opposed to the actual market rate at Capitol Hill, which is closer to $150,000. So everyone’s between 52 and 80. It’s actually socialism and communism on display.”

In such a short rant, Hagseth got so much wrong. Most obviously, getting paid $15 an hour doesn’t amount to a $52,000 salary — it’s about $31,200. He has confused advocacy for a $15 minimum wage for Ocasio-Cortez’s baseline pay. While it’s easy for anyone to make a basic math error on live TV, this mistake is particularly revealing. Anyone familiar with these sorts of pay scales would know immediately that $15 an hour is well below $52,000 a year. Hagseth clearly hasn’t actually spent much time thinking about what these rates actually mean for working people if he can’t make sense of the numbers.

But perhaps more importantly, his claim that Ocasio-Cortez’s more egalitarian, though not equal, pay scales amounts to socialism or communism is pure nonsense. Even in capitalistic societies, some employers will choose different salary structures for various reasons. If you conceive of U.S. lawmakers in a competitive market for staffers, Ocasio-Cortez has simply made a rational decision that she thinks makes sense for her office. By paying higher salaries to entry-level staffers, she may be able to attract more applicants. But the pay scales also reflect her more egalitarian values, which will help her attract the staffers who share those ideals. For Hagseth and others at Fox News, though, the idea that a highly qualified chief-of-staff may be paid less so entry-level staffers could be paid more is a threat to the hierarchies they prefer to see in the world.

fox & Friends hosts a QAnon conspiracy theorist who has claimed the Parkland mass shooting was fake

Fox & Friends provided a platform to a man who has repeatedly pushed the QAnon conspiracy theory, including sharing a post that claimed the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, was “fake” and that student survivors of the shooting are “actors.”

}:

During the August 24 edition of Fox & Friends, the show hosted Jason Fyk, who was identified as an entrepreneur, along with Fyk’s attorney to discuss Fyk’s lawsuit against Facebook for “unlawfully silencing people … for its own financial gain.” During the interview, co-host Steve Doocy praised Fyk for using Facebook to build a business and pursuing “the American dream,” whileFyk compared himself to YouTube personalities Diamond and Silk, citing the duo’s false Facebook censorship claims.

The show -- which President Donald Trump consistently watches -- did not disclose that Fyk has appeared multiple times on Infowars, the far-right conspiracy theory outlet that has been banned from multiple tech platforms for violating their hate speech and harassment policies. On his own Facebook profile, Fyk has also repeatedly promoted posts from “Q,” the supposed figure behind the QAnon conspiracy theory who claims that Trump has a master plan to dismantle child trafficking rings supposedly linked to powerful politicians and celebrities and defeat his perceived enemies and the “deep state.” (Three conspiracy theorists reportedly spread the conspiracy theory for financial gain.) In March, Fyk posted an image of a “Q” post calling the Parkland mass shooting “FAKE” and a “distraction” that was “organized & designed to DISTRACT” and that it featured “ACTORS [who] are ACTING.”

Fyk also discussed QAnon in January while appearing on Infowars (which fully embraced the conspiracy theory early on), with an Infowars host saying to Fyk, “What do you think of these latest QAnon posts hot off the press? ‘Chuck Schumer will live in fear from today forward.’ This is turning out to be a really good day.” Fyk responded that it was “definitely a win for the right.”

Trump himself may have also tweeted in response to Fyk's appearance when he claimed social media platforms were "silencing millions of people."

chyron: nationalize corps

...

ED HENRY (CO-HOST): Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren unveiling a shocking new proposal that would nationalize every major business in America. The new legislation called the Accountable Capitalism Act would constitute the largest seizure of private property in human history. So what would it do to our economy? What would it look like with the government in charge of our largest corporations?Let's ask the CEO of Walzer Wealth Management, Rebecca Walzer.

...

What's your immediate reaction to this idea that all of the sudden the government would nationalize all these companies?

REBECCA WALZER (WALZER WEALTH MANAGEMENT CEO): Well, I'm glad that she's bold enough to actually tell us exactly what she wants because now we can call a spade a spade. This is definitely socialism because socialism is public ownership of companies where all the profits are actually redistributed to stakeholders instead of shareholders. And --

HENRY: Yeah, let me just break down the bill for you and then we can let you pull it apart. So this is what Elizabeth Warren says because, as you point out, she's being direct, she's being blunt about saying I want socialism. "The Accountable CapitalismAct restores the idea that giant American corporations," she writes, "should look out for American interests. Corporations with more than a billion dollars in annual revenue would be required to get a federal corporate charter." She says the bill "also would give workers a stronger voice in corporate decision-making at large companies and employees would elect at least 40 percent of the directors to address self-serving financial incentives in corporate management." That's what she says is in the bill. What's your reaction to that?

WALZER: You know Ed, it's just simply unnecessary.Corporations already answer to the American public. Look at the rise of social media. When somebody is not happy with something that corporations are doing, it's all over Twitter. There's boycotts. We already have really ownership of private corporations through boycotting. If you don't like what they're doing you don't go there. So what she's trying to do is really saylet's take the profits of these corporations and let's use them for our purposes, and so what we have to look at is how good is the government at taking resources and effectively using them, and so the VA comes to mind, Medicare comes to mind, Social Security comes to mind. These are all financially inept systems and American businesses reach a billion dollars because they are privately managed and with regulation, already government regulation, they are free to do what they do.

mazie Hirono, the Democratic senator from Hawaii, was questioning the head of removal operations for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Matthew Albence, over the administrations family reunification efforts. The folks at Fox & Friends, a well-known Trump Administration propaganda tool, selectively edited, and then intentionally presented the falsified video as proof the US Senator was "confused" over immigration law.

Via Media Matters:

Fox & Friends deceptively edited a clip of an exchange between Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) and the head of removal operations for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Matthew Albence, during a July 31 Senate Judiciary Committee hearing regarding oversight of immigration enforcement and family reunification efforts. Despite the way Fox & Friends presented the dialogue -- suggesting a sitting U.S. senator was “confused about the immigration laws” -- Hirono was, in fact, correct in her assertions that the Trump administration alone made the decision to start prosecuting everyone crossing the border illegally, which has resulted in the separation of hundreds of immigrant families. Albence would acknowledge Hirono’s assertion as “correct,” but Fox & Friends did not include the comment in its deceptively edited clip.
