whole day hearing why global climate change is not happening, but here it

is. The emboldened names are quite familiar to those who study climate

anti-science. Sadly, Galileos do not speak here.

Doctors for Disaster Preparedness (DDP) is a 501(C)(3) non-profit located in Tucson, Arizona. It has ties to the American Association of Physicians and Surgeons, a conservative advocacy group that shares the same address and administrative staff. [1]

Arthur B. Robinson is Vice President and past President of DDP, as well as founder of the Oregon Institute for Science and Medicine (OISM). The DDP page on the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine (OISM) website offers the following description:

Doctors for Disaster Preparedness (DDP) “promotes homeland defense and prudent preparedness for disasters of all kinds, including war or terrorism. Its annual meeting brings together America's foremost authorities on strategic and civil defense as well as prominent scientists speaking on real threats or manufactured scares. Recent topics: global warming, ozone “depletion,” radiation hazards andradiation hormesis. [2]

In addition to mailing address, the Doctors for Disaster Preparedness website is registered to Jeremy Snavely of AAPS. [3] Mother Jones magazine offered the following description of the AAPS's journal, called the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons: [4]

“The publication's archives present a kind of alternate-universe scientific world, in which abortion causes breast cancer and vaccines cause autism, but HIV does not cause AIDS. Cutting carbon emissions represents a grave threat to global health (because environmental regulation would make people poorer and, consequently, sicker) … The organization opposes some of the most accepted practices in health care, including mandatory vaccine regulations. Peer review, a long-standing hospital practice that helps doctors learn from and prevent errors, is viewed as the source of great injustice by AAPS, which fights attempts to micromanage doctors with such bureaucratic nuisances as medical evidence about what works and what doesn't. Computers, too, are an ominous threat. The organization has resisted the use of electronic medical records—which, naturally, represents an attempt by the government to acquire masses of private information about American citizens. (AAPS' executive director claims to keep all her patient notes in longhand.)”

Doctors for Disaster Preparedness (DDP) offers a “Disaster Preparedness Library,” which includes a “Global Warming Seminar” by Arthur B. Robinson as well as coverage of “Nuclear War Survival Skills.”[5]

Topics on DDP's website include: “Ozone hole, Global warming, and other Environmental Scares,” Chem/Bio Terrorism, Vaccines, DDT, Low Dose Radiation, Civil Defense, Chemical Hysteria, Physician Oaths, Nuclear Fear, among others.

Stance on Climate Change

DDP lists climate change as an “Environmental Scare,” and links to a variety of skeptical authors and organizations from their website including the Oregon Petition, which was associated with the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine (OISM). [6]

Funding

According to Doctors for Disaster Preparedness's most recent 990 tax forms (EIN 59-2414338), DDP reported $70,887 in net assets at the end of 2014 with $51,256 in total revenue. Approximately 40% of their revenue came from membership dues, and they reported 59% from “program service revenue.” View publicly available 990 forms below

[990's]

doctors for Disaster Preparedness (DDP) requires that members pay dues based on the following membership tiers: [7]

Willie Soon and DDP

Willie Soon, who has had more than $1.2 million in contributions from the fossil fuel industry while failing to report that information in many of his scientific papers, [8] has been a regular speaker at the Doctors for Disaster Preparedness annual meetings. DeSmogblog reports on Soon's speeches from 2000 to 2014. [9]

See John Mashey's spreadsheet on DDP Speakersfor more details (Chron lists talks chronologically and Speakers is sorted by name, putting Willie Soon near the end.)

Former key employees, according to 2010's publicy-filed 990 tax forms, (2010 990-EZ):

DDP has awarded its “Petr Beckmann award for courage and achievement in defense of scientific truth and freedom” to numerous climate change skeptics. See DeSmogBlog's report, “Weird Anti-Science - Donna Bethell, SEPP and Sandia National Laboratories” (page 19), for more information:

Actions

July 8 - 11, 2016

Doctors for Disaster Preparedness hosted it's 34th Annual Meeting, co-sponsored by Access to Energy, the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine, and Physicians for Civil Defense. Keynote speakers at the event featured many prominent climate change deniers.

Full list of speakers and available videos below: [33]

Willie Soon's talk was titled on “Beethoven’s Ice Cream, Tolstoy’s Fire, Happer’s Picosecond Pedestal—and Climate”:

[vids]...

May 21 - 23, 2012

DDP is listed as an official Co-sponsor of the Heartland Institute's Seventh International Conference on Climate Chance (ICCC7) in Chicago, IL. [19]

DeSmogBlog researched co-sponsors behind the conference and discovered that they had received a total of over $67 Million from ExxonMobil, Koch, and Scaife Family Foundations. [20]

June 2, 2010

Willie Soon presentedhis “Endangering the Polar Bear” talk at the Doctors for Disaster Preparedness 26th Annual Meeting view video here/maxresdefault.jpg)). [21]

“I really don't think that you can find or argue convincingly that there are any significant worries about the sea ice condition in the Arctic,” Soon told the group. “I would suggest that the current condition today is nowhere near optimal for the polar bear, which means it can grow a little bit warmer.”

May 16-18, 2010

Doctors for Disaster Preparedness (DDP) was an official co-sponsorof the Heartland Institute's Fourth International Conference on Climate Change (ICCC4) in Chicago, IL. [22]

DeSmogBlog investigated sponsors of the event, and found that they had received a combined total of over $40 million in funding from ExxonMobil since 1985, and/or Koch Industries foundations, and/or the Scaife family foundations.  [23]

June 2, 2009

Doctors for Disaster Preparedness (DDP) was a co-sponsor of the Heartland Institute's Third International Conference on Climate Change (ICCC3). [24]

April, 1998

DDP has sent letters both promoting (PDF) and defending (PDF) the Oregon Petition which purports to have collected the signatures of 16,000 “scientists” who deny man-made global warming.[25], [26]

The Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine (OISM), which appears to have been a part of organizing the petition project, also appears to be connected to DDP.

Their letter to the Senate and House of Representatives discounted a previous letter written by the group Ozone Action to the Washington Times which cast doubt on the 16,000 “scientists” letter. DDP suggests that the Kyoto Treaty's scientific issues “need to be discussed by grownups,” implying that “Global Warmers” are “childish.” [26]

Related Organizations & Jane Orient

As reported by John Mashey at DeSmogBlog, DDP President Jane Orient has connections to at least six other nonprofit groups, some dormant, and most with tax-exempt 501(c)(3) status. View attached spreadsheet (.xls)for more details on connections between the groups. [27]

Jane Orient has also had previous dealings with the tobacco industry, having met with Phillip Morris, and with many references to her name in a search of the tobacco archives. [28]

With regards to President Clinton's budget proposal that would fine cigarette companies for underage smokers, Orient is quoted as saying that “Concern about health does not justify using Third Reich measures against corporations engaged in a legal Business.” [29]

Orient's connections include the following organizations:

EIN: 860852791 | AAPS Educational Foundation — Apparently dormant.

EIN: 860884230 | Southwestern Institute of Science LTD — Apparently dormant.

EIN: 860691180 | Physicians for Civil Defense — Still has active website (physiciansforcivildefense.org). At least once DDP sent money there. The two organizations are located in the same office.

EIN: 362991388 | American Health Legal Foundation (AHLF) — Has over $500K in assets (as of 2014) and 2 officers/directors shared with AAPS, plus Orient.

EIN: 362059197| Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS, 501(c)(6))— Has nearly $1M assets (as of 2014),  paid Jane Orient $182,600 in 2012 (Form 990), has a few thousand members, website, and entries in Wikipedia, SourceWatch and RationalWiki.

AAPS publishes the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons (JPandS), not an indexed, peer-reviewed journal. The Journal published “Environmental Effects of Increased Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide” in 2007 by Art Robinson, Noah Robinson, and Willie Soon.  It has often published Robinsons, as well as other climate-relevant pieces. Besides Jane Orient, it has shared several offices/directors with DDP, as enumerated in attached spreadsheet.

According to WHOIS results for DDP's website, the registrant isJeremy Snavelyof AAPS. DDP also lists the same physical address as AAPS. [3]

EIN: 592414338 |  Doctors for Disaster Preparedness INC (DDP)

EIN: 930814898 | The Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine (OISM), IRS, has about $5M in assets, a website, a SourceWatch entry. Two of its “faculty” are deceased. The Board consists of Art Robinson, his sons Noah and Zachary, Jane Orient, and one more person. OISM is known for the Oregon Petition.

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/**2016/**01/ted-cruz-donor-robert-mercer-profiled.html

bloomberg News has a profile up of Robert Mercer, a New York hedge fund bajillionaire who has given $11 million to a Ted Cruz super PAC and, overall, has reportedly spent more money on the 2016 election cycle than any other single donor. The article as a whole is an interesting look how the post–Citizens United campaign finance system contributes to ideological extremism and at Mercer’s background as a computer programmer. But I’d like to focus on a few particular passages about other candidates and activists to whom Mercer has given money.Such as Oregon congressional aspirant and urine scholar Arthur Robinson:

Robinson, now 73, was not your average candidate. In a lab on a sheep ranch in the Siskiyou Mountains, he’s spent the last couple of years collecting thousands of vials of human urine. Funded by private donors, he claims his work holds the key to extending the human life span and wresting control of medicine from what he calls the “medical-industrial-government complex.”

And this woman:

[Mercer] has attended and funded an annual conference organized byJane Orient, an Arizona physician and activist who recently suggested in an opinion article that elements in the U.S. government might have taken part in the San Bernardino massacre.

Orient’s group, to which she describes Mercer as a “generous” donor, is called Doctors for Disaster Preparedness. At their meeting in August 2015, which Mercer attended, a man named Donald Miller discussed his belief that the “HIV/AIDS establishment” has suppressed evidence that HIV is “harmless” and does not cause AIDS. Another medical-conspiracy organization run by Orient (and affiliated with several Republican politicians including Rand Paul) backs the assertion that water fluoridation causes cancer; Orient’s San Bernardino column insinuates thattraitorous elements within the U.S. government allowed the massacre to take place and, as an aside, suggests that Hillary Clinton may have been “running guns to ISIS from Benghazi.” A recent Doctors for Disaster Preparedness newsletter asserted that :{the government knows that }::{civil war is imminent}:.

Again, this is a group whose president describesthe biggest 2016 donor in Americaas a “generous” supporter. Yeesh.

ELECTION 2016

What candidates should be saying on San Bernardino

Exclusive: Jane M. Orient, M.D., warns of possible radioactive terror against America

Jane M. Orient, M.D. By Jane M. Orient, M.D.

Published December 7, 2015 at 7:48pm

After every shooting episode, the response is the same formula: constant media coverage, much of it fact-free, and calls for thoughts, prayers – and still more gun control. It's time to take a broader perspective than a focus on the dozens of individual tragedies.

Today, Americans are targets. Not just individual Americans, but also the United States of America. They are targeted by deranged individuals, by fanatical ideologues, by drug cartels, by terrorist organizations and by foreign powers, some of whom have intercontinental ballistic missiles with multiple independently targeted nuclear warheads aimed at American cities.

Our thoughts need to turn to what is really going on, and our prayers need to include "God save the United States of America."

We have pervasive surveillance of our financial transactions, our telephone and electronic communications, our medical records and our movements. The government has enormous powers of search and seizure, many unthinkable to drafters of our Fourth Amendment, and these are used against Americans engaged in normal business that threatens no one. We already have lots of gun control laws.

So how were terrorists in San Bernardino able to accumulate bomb-making material, an arsenal of weapons both legal and illegal, and body armor without spurring any action by the authorities?

TRENDING: The burning question: Are there enough lampposts?

Terrorists have also engaged in operations that don't yet have any poster children but that are far more dangerous than shooting up a Christmas party, such as disabling a key electrical substation. This shows the capacity for coordinated, sophisticate operations that could cripple the electricity grid for a long time.

Candidates such as Donald Trump and Ted Cruz call for controlling illegal immigration – surely necessary, but insufficient. The San Bernardino terrorists were here legally.

Here are the real issues we need to discuss:

Americans are mostly helpless victims.

The government that is supposed to protect us, though awesomely powerful, appears to be incompetent, corrupt, or – dare we suggest it? – on the other side.

Americans are divided by a culture of grievances.

America is dangerously weak.

U.S. foreign policy is recklessly provocative.

Some candidates, including Trump and Cruz, support the right of Americans to own effective tools of self-defense. But none is talking about the long-standing official government stance of keeping Americans vulnerable hostages to nuclear weapons. Rudimentary civil defense was dismantled long ago; Americans don't even know to drop and cover if they see a bright flash. Nuclear terrorism could produce the negligible dose of radiation that alarms the hazmat teams' monitors. The civil defense instruments appropriate to a war environment were discarded and not replaced.

It was a long time before the FBI was permitted to use the word "terrorism," though everyone knew it was involved in San Bernardino. We are crippled by political correctness; thank you, Mr. Trump, for saying so. The president won't even name the enemy. We surely need to vet refugees – but even more so the State Department, the Department of Justice and law enforcement agencies for believers in jihad; connections with foreign governments; or bribe-takers from the drug trade, organized crime, crony capitalists, or non-governmental organizations, including radical environmentalists.

Americans are being indoctrinated from grade school in the culture of collective guilt instead of individual responsibility. They are supposed to be either entitled victims or guilt-ridden "oppressors." Thank you, Dr. Carson, for addressing this racial divisiveness. Endless revenge and "reparations" for the sins of great-great-great-grandfathers means endless war, both here and in the Middle East.

When Trump calls for "making America great again," it's an admission that America is no longer great. Our military, our industry, our currency are being destroyed by taxation, regulation, litigation, reckless spending and abandonment of the virtues, morality and faith of our Founders.

And what is our foreign policy, really? Thank you, Dr. Paul, for asking questions about creating grievances. Who is pointing out that the U.S. and Russia are fighting a war in Syria, on opposite sides, and that a Russian warplane was downed by a NATO member, possibly with a U.S.-made weapon? Exactly why does "Assad have to go," and who are we to decide? Was our government running guns to ISIS from Benghazi, Mrs. Clinton?

It is terrible that Americans can get shot at a Christmas party, but much worse will happen if we don't confront the problems beginning at the top.

Professor Petr Beckmann published the Access to Energy, "A Pro-Science, Pro-Technology, Pro-Free Enterprise Monthly Newsletter" for 20 years until August 1993. He died later that year.

During that time he had a bulletin board system which could be accessed by his subscribers. This was called Fort Freedom.

I first made contact with it on November 18, 1988 (see Responses to Fort Freedom) - 8 years ago, almost to the day of my writing this (November 20, 1996)! Anyway, because I had to make an expensive overseas telephone call to access Fort Freedom, I arranged with Prof. Beckmann to send me the contents of Fort Freedom on disk. I received that in February 1989. I had ideas that I might set up an Australian copy of it - but it never happened. Until now - when I have been able to put it on the Internet. So this is Fort Freedom, as it was in 1989.

dDP News – Vol. XXXVI, No. 1

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, face masks for the public have been advocated or required in various places in the world, but the demands to force everybody, even children, to comply in the U.S. have become frenzied as this is being written in early July.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) floated the thought that the epidemic might be over, as all-cause mortality had peaked and returned to normal. But then surges of “cases” were reported in Florida and the border states of California, Arizona, and Texas—along with a surge in testing. A “case” is a person with a positive test, even if apparently well. Governors were criticized for re-opening too soon, and began forcing still-surviving businesses such as gyms to close. And various jurisdictions began to impose mask requirements.

:{

The narrative about non-medical masks is that they protect others even if they do nothing to help the wearer. Thus, failure to comply is portrayed as a selfish, anti-social act. There being no reliable information about the sources of infection, every person is a potential threat. Contact tracers are to be deployed by hundreds of thousands to interview persons who test positive, to find and isolate persons who might have been near them. It would instead seem logical to ask sick people where they might have been exposed, as when investigating an outbreak of food poisoning. Asking about attending a Black Lives Matter protest is off-limits, at least in New York. And what about border crossing?

It just happens that surges in border states have occurred in border counties, coinciding with a COVID surge in Mexico. The three Rio Grande Valley counties—Starr, Hidalgo, and Cameron—had a 29% hospitalization-to-case ratio in early July, when the rate for the U.S. was 5.8%. This suggests that seriously sick patients may be crossing the border in search of treatment(https://tinyurl.com/y88cvxz3).The number of illegal immigrants crossing the southern border surged 40% in June (https://tinyurl.com/yaj6dt3x).

Texas emergency chief Nim Kidd’s suggestion: more mask wearing, even inside the home (https://tinyurl.com/y8mlxah2).

Where is the evidence to support the mask wearing demanded with such certitude and passion by medical authorities, who at the same time insist on “evidence-based medicine” for treatments? What exactly changed the official advice? In February, the CDC website advised against masks outside the medical setting. On May 29, the World Health Organization (WHO) was against masking for the public, and the CDC was for it (https://tinyurl.com/y9etk8am).

On Jun 8, WHO changed its stance to favor public masking (https://tinyurl.com/ybxpdbco). Surgeon General Jerome Adams recanted his initial opposition to public masking.

Actual evidence for efficacy is scanty. For an excellent compendium of information by Marilyn Singleton, M.D., J.D., see https://aapsonline.org/mask-facts/.

For an average American living outside New York City, the chance of being an extra fatality from COVID-19 was about 1 in 5,000, somewhat higher than the chance of dying in an auto accident in a year. For those under 50 with no serious health conditions, the risk was about 1 in 50,000, similar to the risk of dying in a fire (https://tinyurl.com/ybmfalgy).

How much can mask-wearing reduce that risk? There are no randomized controlled trials. A WHO-funded meta-analysis looked at observational studies in severe respiratory distress syndrome (SARS), Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), and COVID-19; the last included only seven studies, one with 15 and one with 20 subjects. The adjusted odds ratio of becoming infected after exposure to an infected person was 0.15 for wearing a mask vs. no mask, a result considered to be of “low certainty.”

Looking at raw numbers, 163/3686 (4.4%) got infected when wearing a mask and 546/6484 (8.4%) when not wearing a mask (Lancet 6/27/20, https://tinyurl.com/y8bglwtb). Thus, the average probability of notgetting infected was 91.6%. If a person is not infected, there is 0% probability of transmission and 100% probability of no transmission. If the person is asymptomatic, the possibility of transmission is disputed (https://tinyurl.com/yaofalez).

Masks may help, but any benefit must be balanced against harm. Masks are a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi, writes virologist Hendrik Streek, and could even increase the risk of coronavirus infection (https://tinyurl.com/y7vuxudy).

Viruses trapped in the mask can eventually spill over if the mask is not properly sanitized (Dr. Ted Noel recommends every 4 hours), delivering a larger dose than the wearer might have gotten from the air (https://tinyurl.com/ybap4af5).

N95 respirators have been found to harbor influenza virus. Increased infection rates in mask wearers may result from a weakening of immune function by hypoxemia. Masks increase the work of breathing and can diminish proper gas exchange (https://tinyurl.com/y7arx9de).

One cannot blow out a burning flame through an N95 or surgical mask, according to the makers of the RS1 Respirator Mask (samgo1.com), whereas one can easily do so through their mask, which uses a filter that purportedly does not resist airflow but captures bacteria and virus particles using an electrostatic process. N95 masks, they claim, trap some respired air, increasing inhaled carbon dioxide to 2–3% (normal, 0.04%) and reducing oxygen intake by 5–20%. This could account for the symptoms experienced by many mask wearers. N95 masks, compared with surgical masks, do not reduce the risk of laboratory-confirmed influenza (https://tinyurl.com/ybboza42). A meta-analysis of ten randomized, controlled trials reporting estimates of face-mask effectiveness in lowering rates of laboratory-confirmed influenza within the community, published between 2008 and 2016, showed no benefit. Moreover, the authors cautioned that using face masks improperly might “increase the risk for (viral) transmission” (https://tinyurl.com/yb3ge4zu).

A controlled study showed that properly fitted surgical face masks might reduce human non-COVID-19, cold-causing coronavirus emission into exhaled aerosols and large respiratory droplets, but samples collected from comparably ill patients randomly allocated to the group not wearing masks showed that “the majority of participants with influenza virus and coronavirus infection did not shed detectable virus,” and viral “shedders” transmitted small amounts of virus (ibid.).

If COVID transmission occurs via aerosols traveling long distances, neither masks nor “social distancing” will be effective. The need is for better ventilation and for a way to disinfect the air, which is also effective against other pathogens such as tuberculosis. Far UV-C (about 220 nm) light, which does not penetrate far enough to affect human skin or eyes, shows great potential (https://tinyurl.com/yd7u393f).

MASKING OTHER ISSUES

While COVID-19 “case” counts dominate the news, where is the coverage on public and private debt, loss of tax revenue, rampant fraud in aid programs, corruption and malfeasance in the FBI and other government agencies, and other urgent issues?

after President Trump withdrew the U.S. from the Paris climate change accord, various state politicians, most prominently California Governor Jerry Brown, stepped forward to say that their state or city would fight “climate change” on its own. Also, a number of Republican congressmen have joined the Climate Solutions Caucus.

In an effort to spur some critical thinking, DDP has launched the Climate Change IQ Test. We intend to distribute a question of the week for 10 weeks.

You can help by disseminating the questions, posted here and in our Twitter feed, @d4dp. (If you are on Twitter, please follow us!) Use email, social media, or other means of communicating with elected officials, opinion leaders, teachers, or friends. Add you own comments and suggestions.

Here’s a list of “Climate Solutions Caucus” members and their contact information: https://goo.gl/MhLZTo

And here is a copy of the cover letter introducing the Caucus members to our project:

Sept. 11, 2017

To: Members of Climate Solutions Caucus

We appreciate your concern about what a consortium of medical societies, among others, has declared to be the most serious threat to human health.

We recommend that you follow sound scientific procedure in prescribing drastic remedies:

We think you will agree that there is a lot of misinformation out there concerning climate change. We are hoping to stimulate a useful discussion and to improve Americans’ scientific literacy. Therefore, we will be sharing with you weekly Climate Change IQ questions (#CCIQ). This will include our, an illustrative figure, a brief discussion, and a few references for further information.

We encourage you to submit the question to your climate change go-to scientists, and share comments or questions with us. It is critical to get this right!

The plan is to send a question of the week for the next 10 weeks. Question #1 is enclosed or attached.

Please feel free to call me personally if you have any questions: (520) 323-3110.

Respectfully,

Jane M. Orient, M.D., President

Fear-Mongering Quackjob Dr. Jane Orient Claims Ebola Is Already Crossing Our Southern Borders 1

B HYPATIA LIVINGSTON ON AUGUST 4, 2014 IDIOCRACY, IMMIGRATION

While appearing on an internet “talk show,” Dr. Jane Orient, best known for her quacky platform as Executive Director of the fear-mongering Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS), claimed that Border Patrol informants told her that “as many 100,000 West Africans are in Central America” — and they have been taught to speak Spanish and are coming across our Southern border,” according to a writer on the conspiracy-filledWorldNetDaily website who interviewed her on his radio show.

Dr. Orient further complained that “Ebola screening practices” had not been implemented at the border with immigrants that were being detained. (Of course, if they’ve learned Spanish along their journey, they can totally blend in with the influx of minor children, right?)

While Dr. Orient is technically a medical doctor, her various theories on the science of medicine have been found to be full of fear-mongering, Obama-hating and other assorted quackery. As Rational Wiki explains, “The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons is a small group of “conservative” quacks, cranks and fundamentalist zealots which likes to rail against such timeless evils as abortion, vaccination and the idea of universal health care coverage.”

She also told theWorldnetDaily writer that terrorists could somehow infect African immigrants purposefully and use them as an agent for biological terror, leading the writer to conclude that  “The drug trade in West Africa is tied to Hamas, the Muslim Brotherhood, al-Qaeda and now probably ISIS. This is an ominous discovery because it now opens the possibility that Ebola could be purposely sent to the United States with West African drug couriers. An organization, such as Hamas, could arrange to have a number of West Africans to become exposed to the virus and then fast track them across the southern border under the guise of trafficking in drugs.”

African immigrants account for only roughly 3.3% of total immigration to the United States since 1965, according to Wikipedia. Reports of the drug trade out of Africa have been touted by Fox News in recent years, but the traffickers are fairly sophisticated and travel by plane through Ghana, usually directly to Cairo and Dubai, Amsterdam, London and Frankfurt and New York City, avoiding the trafficking areas frequented by violent and dangerous Mexican drug cartels.

Because of the perilous journey and the United States’ fairly liberal immigration policy for West Africans (making it easier to enter the United State legally) only about 3 to 5,000 immigrants travel from African countries through Central and Latin American countries fleeing their homes. Many of these immigrants land in Central American countries and seek asylum, while a small portion makes their painstaking way to US borders. The journey is among the most treacherous migrations they can choose as a pathway to citizenship, often taking in excess of 30 days to arrive in Central or Latina American destinations alone, with several more weeks of travel and the possibility of drowning or dying of dehydration along the final leg of the trip.

The incubation period for Ebola2-20 days, with most patients becoming severely ill very quickly, unable to sit up in bed or walk on their own. Ebola cannot be caught through air, skin to skin contact (unless a person is sweating profusely) or from sharing food or sleeping space. According to the World Health Organization,  “People can be exposed to Ebola virus from direct physical contact with body fluids like blood, saliva, stool, urine, sweat etc. of an infected person and soiled linen used by a patient. It can be spread through contact with objects, such as needles, that have been contaminated with infected secretions.”

Dr. Orient is not the first quack to raise concerns about Ebola being transmitted via children who have yet to, or have already crossed our border. Last week, Rep. Phil Gingrey made similar claims, stressing that border agents are also very “fearful” of an eminent Ebola outbreak risk. (These claims were debunked thoroughly, earning a Politifact “Pants on Fire” rating the same day they came out.)

Petr Beckmann Award[

The 'Petr Beckmann Award for courage and achievement in defense of scientific truth and freedom' is awarded at the annual meeting of the Doctors for Disaster Preparedness. The award is named for Petr Beckmann, an electrical engineer and libertarian who claimed to have debunked Albert Einstein's theory of relativity.[3] The Guardian described the Beckmann Award as "handed out by obscure rightwing lobbyists".[3] The following people have received this award:

Morano's selection was criticized in The Guardian, as Morano had previously republished the email address of a climate scientist who had received death threats. Morano wrote of climate scientists: "I seriously believe we should kick them while they're down. They deserve to be publicly flogged."[3]

Annual meetings[

In August 2015 the group held its 33rd annual meeting. While attacks on mainstream climate science are "a staple", the meeting provides a forum to a "broad" range of material. Presentations at the 2015 meeting included a theory about links between John F. Kennedy’s assassination and the deaths of his brother and son; a prediction that the aim of Obamacare was to cause the collapse the U.S. health-care system and a recommendation "that the audience start stockpiling medications and finding doctors who would work for cash"; a sympathetic discussion of the theory that low doses of radiation are "beneficial to human health"; and an argument that the HIV virus does not cause AIDS, but instead was invented by government scientists who wanted to cover up other health risks of “the lifestyle of homosexual men.”[3] The meeting was covered by conservative website Breitbart, attended by George Gilder, and the conservative Heartland Institute sent its science director to present his plan to abolish the Environmental Protection Agency.[3]

Political views[

Regarding the controversy over the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report on the melt rate of Himalayan-glaciers,[15][unreliable source?] Doctors for Disaster Preparedness President Jane Orient said: "The data, all the data, needs to come to light, ...Thousands of scientists are capable of assessing it. The only reason to keep it hidden, locked in the clutches of the elite few, is that it decisively disproves their computer models and shows that their draconian emission controls are based on nothing except a lust for power, control and profit."[16]

After the nuclear accident at Fukushima, Doctors for Disaster Preparedness President Jane Orient argued that concerns about the disaster were exaggerated and the accident should not deter the United State from using nuclear power.[17]

Doctors for Disaster Preparedness President Jane Orient supports the building of civil defense shelters in case of a terrorist attack.[18] Due to an increase in fallout shelter construction since 911 by Americans fearing a nuclear terrorist attack, she was quoted as saying, "They're treating me less like a crazy woman than they did before."[19]

The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) is a politically conservative non-profit association founded in 1943 to "fight socialized medicine and to fight the government takeover of medicine."[1][2] The group was reported to have approximately 4,000 members in 2005, and 3,000 in 2011.[1][3

^]^ Notable members include Ron Paul andJohn Cooksey;[4] the executive director is Jane Orient, a member of the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine.

The AAPS motto, "omnia pro aegroto" is Latin for "all for the patient."[5] AAPS also publishes the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons (formerly known as the Medical Sentinel). The Journal is not indexed by mainstream scientific databases such as the Web of Science or MEDLINE.[6] The quality and scientific validity of articles published in the Journalhas been widely criticized, and many of the political and scientific viewpoints advocated by AAPS are considered extreme or dubious by mainstream scientists and medical groups.[1]

History:{:(style="margin-right:0px;margin-left:0px"):}:[edit:{]}:

During the winter of 1943, the Lake County (Indiana) Medical Committee opposed the Wagner-Murray-Dingell Bill, proposed legislation that would provide government health care for most U.S. citizens. Also opposed to the bill was the conservative National Physicians Committee. The committee began a membership drive in February 1944. By May 1944, the AAPS claimed members from all 48 states.[2] In 1944, Time reported that the group's aim was the "defeat of any Government group medicine."[2] In 1966, the New York Times described AAPS as an "ultra-right-wing... political-economic rather than a medical group," and noted that some of its leaders were members of the John Birch Society.[7]

Positions:{:(style="margin-right:0px;margin-left:0px"):}:[edit:{]}:

While AAPS describes itself as "non-partisan",[8] the organization is generally recognized as politically conservative or ultra-conservative.[7][9][10][11] AAPS opposes mandatory blanket vaccination,[12] without informed consent, as well as most forms of government intervention in healthcare.[10][13] The AAPS, discussing the effects of the Social Security Act of 1965 which established Medicare and Medicaid stated that "the effect of the law is evil and participation in carrying out its provisions is, in our opinion, immoral."[14] and encouraged member physicians to boycott Medicare and Medicaid.[15] AAPS argues that individuals should purchase medical care directly from doctors, and that there is no right to medical care.[16] The organization requires its members to sign a "declaration of independence" pledging that they will not work with Medicare, Medicaid, or even private insurance companies.[10]

AAPS opposes mandated evidence-based medicine and practice guidelines, criticizing them as a usurpation of physician autonomy and a fascist merger of state and corporate power driven by the pharmaceutical industry.[17] Other procedures that AAPS opposes include abortion[18] and over-the-counter access to emergency contraception.[19] AAPS also opposes electronic medical records[10] as well as any "direct or de facto supervision or control over the practice of medicine by federal officers or employees."[20]

On Oct 25, 2008 the AAPS website published an editorial implying that Barack Obama was using Neuro-linguistic Programming, "a covert form of hypnosis", to coerce people to vote for him in his 2008 presidential campaign.[21][22]

Political and legal activism:{:(style="margin-right:0px;margin-left:0px"):}:[edit:{]}:

Gun control:{:(style="margin-right:0px;margin-left:0px"):}:[edit:{]}:

AAPS's position is that there is no evidence, from a medical stand point, to support gun control.[23]

Social Security:{:(style="margin-right:0px;margin-left:0px"):}:[edit:{]}:

In 1975, AAPS went to court to block enforcement of a new Social Security amendment that would monitor the treatment given Medicare and Medicaid patients.[24]

Opposition to health-care reform:{:(style="margin-right:0px;margin-left:0px"):}:[edit:{]}:

With several other groups, AAPS filed a lawsuit in 1993 against Hillary Clinton and Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala over closed-door meetings related to the 1993 Clinton health care plan. The AAPS sued to gain access to the list of members of President Clinton's health care taskforce. Judge Royce C. Lamberth found in favor of the plaintiffs and awarded $285,864 to the AAPS for legal costs; Lamberth also harshly criticized the Clinton administration and Clinton aideIra Magaziner in his ruling.[25] Subsequently, a federal appeals court overturned the award and the initial findings on the basis that Magaziner and the administration had not acted in bad faith.[26] AAPS also opposed the Obama Administration's Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, and on March 26, 2010 AAPS filed suit to invalidate the new health care bill.[27]

The AAPS was involved in litigation against Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), arguing that it violates the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution by allowing government access to certain medical data without a warrant.[28] (Title II of HIPAA, known as the Administrative Simplification (AS) provisions, requires the establishment of national standards for electronic health care transactions and national identifiers for providers, health insurance plans, and employers, and is intended to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the US's health care system by encouraging the widespread use of electronic data interchange in the health care system.)

Seizure of Rush Limbaugh's medical records:{:(style="margin-right:0px;margin-left:0px"):}:[edit:{]}:

In 2004, AAPS filed a brief on behalf of conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh in Florida's Fourth District Court of Appeal, opposing the seizure of his medical files in an investigation of drug charges for Limbaugh's alleged misuse of prescription drugs. The AAPS stated the seizure was a violation of state law and that 'It is not a crime for a patient to be in pain and repeatedly seek relief, and doctors should not be turned against patients they tried to help.'"[6][29]

Other cases:{:(style="margin-right:0px;margin-left:0px"):}:[edit:{]}:

In 2006 the group criticised what it called sham peer review, claiming it was a device used to punish whistleblowers.[30] The next year, AAPS helped appeal the conviction of Virginia internist William Hurwitz, who was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison for prescribing excessive quantities of narcotic drugs after 16 former patients testified against him.[31] Hurwitz was granted a retrial in 2006, and his 25-year prison sentence was reduced to 4 years and 9 months.[32]

Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons:{:(style="margin-right:0px;margin-left:0px"):}:[edit:{]}:

The Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons (JPandS), until 2003 named the Medical Sentinel,[33][34] is the journal of the association. Its mission statement includes "… a commitment to publishing scholarly articles in defense of the practice of private medicine, the pursuit of integrity in medical research … Political correctness, dogmatism and orthodoxy will be challenged with logical reasoning, valid data and the scientific method." The publication policy of the journal states that articles are subject to a double-blind peer-review process.[35]

The Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons is not listed in major academic literature databases such as MEDLINE/PubMed[36] nor the Web of Science.[37] The U.S. National Library of Medicine declined repeated requests from AAPS to index the journal, citing unspecified concerns.[1] Articles and commentaries published in the journal have argued a number of non-mainstream or scientifically discredited claims,[1] including:

A series of articles by pro-life authors published in the journal argued for a link between abortion and breast cancer.[42][43] Such a link has been rejected by the scientific community, including the U.S. National Cancer Institute,[44] the American Cancer Society,[45] and the World Health Organization,[46] among other major medical bodies.[47]

A 2003 paper published in the journal, claiming that vaccination was harmful, was criticized for poor methodology, lack of scientific rigor, and outright errors by the World Health Organization[48] and the American Academy of Pediatrics.[49] A :{National Public Radio}: piece mentioned inaccurate information published in the Journal and said: "The journal itself is not considered a leading publication, as it's put out by an advocacy group that opposes most government involvement in medical care."[50]

The Journal has also published articles advocating politically and socially conservative policy positions, including:

Quackwatch lists JPandS as an untrustworthy, non-recommended periodical.[53] An editorial in Chemical & Engineering News described JPandS as a "purveyor of utter nonsense."[54] Investigative journalist Brian Deer wrote that the journal is the "house magazine of a right-wing American fringe group [AAPS]" and "is barely credible as an independent forum."[55] Writing in The Guardian, science columnist Ben Goldacre described the Journal as the "in-house magazine of a rightwing US pressure group well known for polemics on homosexuality, abortion and vaccines."[56]

Leprosy error:{:(style="margin-right:0px;margin-left:0px"):}:[edit:{]}:

In a 2005 article published in the Journal, Madeleine Cosman argued that illegal immigrants were carriers of disease, and that immigrants and "anchor babies" were launching a "stealthy assault on [American] medicine."[57] In the article, Cosman claimed that "Suddenly, in the past 3 years America has more than 7,000 cases of leprosy" because of illegal aliens.[57] The journal's leprosy claim was cited and repeated by Lou Dobbs as evidence of the dangers of illegal immigration.[50][58]

However, publicly available statistics show that the 7,000 cases of leprosy occurred during the past 30 years, not the past three as Cosman claimed.[59] James L. Krahenbuhl, director of the U.S. government's leprosy program, stated that there had been no significant increase in leprosy cases, and that "It [leprosy] is not a public health problem—that’s the bottom line."[58] National Public Radio reported that the Journal article "had footnotes that did not readily support allegations linking a recent rise in leprosy rates to illegal immigrants."[50] The article's erroneous leprosy claim was pointed out by 60 Minutes,[60] National Public Radio,[50] and the New York Times[58] but has not been corrected by the Journal.[citation needed]

On Capitol Hill, the Senate Homeland Security Committee chair, Wisconsin Republican Senator Ron Johnson, has invited members of a fringe medical association to testify on the coronavirus pandemic. The lead witness, Dr. Jane M. Orient, has expressed anti-vaccine views and has pushed the use of hydroxychloroquine — an antimalarial drug once promoted by President Trump, which can cause heart rhythm problems and showed no benefit in treating COVID-19. Another witness testifying today, Dr. Ramin Oskoui, has falsely claimed that masks and social distancing don’t work at combating the spread of coronavirus.

https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Association_of_American_Physicians_and_Surgeons

Association of American Physicians and Surgeons is a small group of physicians who, under a false authoritative name, advocate for far-right conservative values in the practice of medicine. While purporting to have high regard for the Hippocratic Oath, "the sanctity of the patient-physician relationship, and the "practice of private medicine",[1] it appears to treat these concepts as terms of art. Despite also calling itself "non-partisan", its main focus appears to be opposing abortion, vaccination, universal health care coverage and Obamacare in particular, and birth control.

These concerns evidence a particular contempt for women's health and wellness. The AAPS specifically opposes vaccination for HPV,[2] a known cancer-causing virus for which a vaccine administered to young women is extremely effective. The group also makes the objectively false claim that there is a meaningful correlation between abortion and breast cancer.[3]

Its website offers this ridiculous claim:

The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) is a non-partisan professional association of physicians in all types of practices and specialties across the country. Since 1943, AAPS has been dedicated to the highest ethical standards of the Oath of Hippocrates and to preserving the sanctity of the patient-physician relationship and the practice of private medicine. Our motto, "omnia pro aegroto" means "all for the patient."[4]

The AAPS is listed as a quack organization by Quackwatch[5]. The organization has made the questionable decision of engaging homeschool instructor and Conservapedia founder Andrew Schlafly as its general counsel to represent its interests in a variety of matters, including filing amici briefs in appellate litigation and even representing member physicians in disciplinary proceedings.

As of 2016, their president, Melinda Woofter, has stated:

We have witnessed an accelerated transformation of our profession away from individualized patient care toward politicized and collectivized “evidence-based medicine.”Without a doubt, this one-size-fits-all approach does not work and never can.[6]

So, there you have it. Bring in the leeches and bloodletters, I guess.

Crowded office[

Its physical address, 1601 N Tucson Blvd #9, Tucson AZ 85716, a suite in a medical center, is shared with a lot of other equally weird organizations including Doctors for Disaster Preparedness, the American Health Legal Foundation,[7] the AAPS Educational Foundation (contact: Dr Jane Orient), Physicians for Civil Defense (contact: Dr Jane Orient),[8] the Southwestern Institute of Science (contact: Dr Jane Orient),[9] and the Southern Arizona Association for Play Therapy.[10]

Activities[

Many of these activities appear to violate their "Patient's Bill of Rights", which, among other things, states:

(the right) to refuse third-party interference in their medical care, and to be confident that their actions in seeking or declining medical care will not result in third-party-imposed penalties for patients or physicians

Publications[

The AAPS publishes the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons (JPANDS), until 2003 called the Medical Sentinel. The journal is not considered a valid, peer-reviewed journal for inclusion in major scientific databases, and has been listed by Quackwatch as "Fundamentally Flawed"[27]. An article in the "journal"[28] was used in 2008 to justify a petition against proposed solutions to the problem of global warming.[29]

Members[

Conflicts[

According to their literature:

AAPS members believe this patient-physician relationship must be protected from all forms of third-party intervention.

Quackery[

The society's "journal" JPANDS has published an article on the supposed link between breast cancer and abortion.[44] It has been roundly debunked.[45][46][47] Near the end of the 2008 Presidential Election the "journal" published a claim that Barack Obama uses neuro-linguistic programming to exercise mind control over people at his rallies.[48]

On their website, former AAPS president Dr. Lawrence Huntoon describes peer review boards which review complaints against doctors as "an insidious and spreading evil which threatens to destroy not only the integrity of the medical profession but quality care for all patients."[49]

Stepping into the fray[

In the midst of the 2016 U.S. presidential election, they released a survey purporting to show that a large number of medical professionals harbor grave concerns about Hillary Clinton's health; specifically, that her health is in such a poor state that it "could be disqualifying for the position of President of the U.S."[50] Of course, who these medical professionals are is nowhere to be found.

What's that? Did I hear you say they could be the doctors in the AAPS?!1?!?!11!?! That's patently absurd. Don't be ridiculous. Are you high?

civil Defense Perspectives 33(4): July 2018

This year marks the 30th anniversary of James E. Hansen’s 1988 congressional testimony on “global warming,” which set off the “disastrous 30 Year War on Carbon,” writes Willis Eschenbach. It is a war on access to affordable energy, which has already claimed thousands of casualties by plunging people into “fuel poverty.” Eschenbach’s electrical bills have climbed 50%; poor people in midwinter have to choose between heating and eating (https://tinyurl.com/yafzjpp3).

When I was in 7th grade at the dawn of the Atomic Age, we read about electricity “too cheap to meter.” Then came the war on nuclear energy. Then on coal. In January 2008, then-Senator Obama said of his Clean Power Plan, “[E]lectricity rates would necessarily skyrocket” (https://tinyurl.com/ydy2ngk8).

The war actually began even before 1988 in UN agencies and transnational, nonaccountable nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). Foreign, anti-American interests heavily promote climate alarmism. The political left, and since around 2000 the Democrat Party, have also unconditionally supported the “climate change” agenda (https://tinyurl.com/y9qrx9tf).

In his new book Green Tyranny, Rupert Darwell argues that the ideology driving the climate scare originated in Hitler’s Germany. In 1941, Hitler said, “Coal will disappear someday,” and “The future belongs, surely, to water—to the wind and the tides.” Darwell writes: “The Nazis’ profound hostility to capitalism and their identification with nature-politics led them to advocate green policies half a century before any other political party” (https://tinyurl.com/y85o4c7n).

Once the anthropogenic global warming theory was proposed by a tiny group of scientists, “With startling speed, their theory was soon proclaimed as being supported by a scientific ‘consensus,’ backed by governments, all the main scientific journals and institutions, environmental pressure groups and the media,” writes Christopher Booker in Global Warming: a Classic Example of Groupthink. Booker applies Groupthink theory popularized 40 years ago by psychologist Irving Janis.

“The one thing those caught up in groupthink cannot tolerate is that anyone should question it…. [Thus], they cannot properly debate the matter with those who disagree with their belief” (TWTW 2/24/18, www.sepp.org).

The Nov 30, 2017, issue of Nature, devoted to “Energy Transitions,” admits no hint of doubts. It calls the transition from wood to coal the “most momentous shift in the history of energy,” which “wrought huge changes in society” in the 16th century. “It reduced the pressure on land because energy could be found below ground,” writes Roger Fouquet of the London School of Economics and Political Science. (Now the climate alarmists want to keep the energy underground.) Wind farms began in the 1980s (see p 2). The renewable energy campaign that began in Denmark in the 70s inspired the German Energiewende.

Nature remarks on how the world’s wealthiest have an “outsized carbon footprint,” an “inequity” that needs correction. The implication is that being wealthy leads to carbon emissions —rather than that access to affordable energy brings prosperity.

The economic analysis of the cost of energy, Nature says, is dominated by increases in premature human deaths allegedly caused by “air pollution” [primarily PM2.5, see May issue and p 2]. Erica Gies writes that this accounts for more than 90% of the calculated damage costs from electricity generation from coal.

In fact, using the same logic, pollution from trucks alone kills 35% more Americans than actually die. Emissions from glider trucks, which are remanufactured from old, salvaged diesel engines, kill 4,100 per year, according to Harvard academicians  (https://tinyurl.com/ydf3h2ej). Glider trucks, however, emit about the same amount of PM2.5 as new trucks, according to measurements at Tennessee Tech University in 2017, writes Steve Milloy. Only 38,000 glider trucks have ever been built, and there are 33.8 million diesel trucks on the road. Thus, new trucks hypothetically kill 3.65 million Americans per year. Yet there are only 2.7 million deaths from all causes (tinyurl.com/ybq36cxp).

Gross pollution does, however, cause some 5 million real, identifiable deaths each year in Africa: air pollution from burning wood and animal dung, and contaminated food and water.

These problems of poverty could be solved with affordable electricity. However, the World Bank and other Multilateral Development Banks stopped financing coal-fired power generation in 2010, and plan to stop funding oil and gas exploration by poor countries. Instead, MDBs devote $34 billion to “climate finance” —which is anti-development (https://tinyurl.com/yatexbul).

The War on Reason and Facts

“Global warming hysteria has raged for 30 years,” writes Cal Thomas. “Predictions…of global significance, should be rigorously examined to see if they have come true. In the case of Mr. Hansen, it’s apparent they have not” (Albuquerque J 7/1/18).

Instead, alarmists make dire future projections based solely on computer models, and “homogenize,” “correct,” and manipulate original data, adjusting records by as much as 3.1 °F (1.7 °C), writesPaul Driessen (https://tinyurl.com/yaes4yag). According to former National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientist John Bates, NOAA had knowingly released “unverified” global temperature data in order to influence policy agendas favored by the Obama administration at the 2015 Paris climate conference, reports Larry Bell (https://tinyurl.com/y9uravkk).

In 1993, the New York Times printed a classic article by Julian Simon and Aaron Wildavsky: “Facts, Not Species, Are Periled.” They stated that there was no evidence that the rate of extinction of species was going up rapidly, or at all. Still, children are being “prepared for planetary crisis”: S.F. Said cites the claim that “nearly one-quarter of mammals are globally threatened or extinct” (Nature 4/26/18). But one-fifth of all species were in danger of being gone by 2003 (NYT, op. cit.). The predictions are based on computer models; only about 800 extinctions have been documented in the past 400 years, out of 1.9 million species (https://tinyurl.com/y9828mw2).

Richard Lindzen stated that historians will wonder “how deeply flawed logic, obscured by shrewd and unrelenting propaganda,… enabled a coalition of powerful special interests to convince nearly everyone…that CO2 from human industry was a dangerous planet-destroying toxin. It will be remembered as the greatest mass delusion in the history of the world” (Bell, op. cit.).

Political pollution of science, on the other hand, is something truly worthy of concern.

Energy Facts

Upon the retirement of Vindeby, the first off-shore wind farm, we learn that it spent 75% of its 25-year life paying off the cost of its construction, and most of the rest paying for maintenance, for a return on input cost of about 1:1. Before the Industrial Revolution, England operated on an energy return investment of 2:1, as do some parts of Africa today. For a typical fossil-fuel plant, the return is 50:1 for the plant alone and 15:1 if fuel cost is included. For nuclear, the ratio is 70:1, and fuel costs are negligible compared to total cost (tinyurl.com/y6uf7x9g).

Availability in disasters: Wind and solar receive energy input at the whim of Nature. A bad storm shuts them down and can even destroy them. Gas plants need just-in-time delivery from a pipeline. Coal plants can store 90 days of fuel on site. Nuclear plants need refueling about every 2 years (WSJ 6/20/18).

More Fake Science

Yet another indictment against PM2.5 pollution: not only is it “associated with” birth defects (see May issue), but with premature birth. Coal and oil plant retirements in California were associated with a tiny but statistically significant decrease in the proportion of preterm births in women residing within 5 km of the plant in pregnancies beginning in the year after plant closure compared with two years before (-0.019, 95% C.I. -0.031, -0.008). That was 6.1% out of 272 live births after closure vs. 7.5% out of 316 live births before. Actual exposure was not measured. Authors speculate that pollution “may increase risk” of prematurity due to intrauterine growth restriction, preeclampsia, etc.—somehow (Am J Epidemiol 5/16/18, doi: 10.1093/aje/kwy110).

Statistician William Briggs writes: “The epidemiologist fallacy strikes again” (http://wmbriggs.com/post/24601/).

EPA Scandals in Obama Years

Unethical Human Experimentation: EPA deliberately exposed hundreds of unwitting subjects to diesel exhaust after telling Congress that this could be lethal (Larry Bell, Forbes 11/13/12, https://tinyurl.com/yd7nnz5q).

Obstruction? Administrator Gina McCarthy deleted 6,000 text messages days after Congress notified EPA that it might be violating laws on preserving records (tinyurl.com/yac79pqq).

Cover-up? EPA allegedly knew of the dangers of a catastrophic blowout at an abandoned Colorado mine before it triggered the release of toxic heavy metals (https://tinyurl.com/y94wkuos), but covered up evidence to shield its agents from prosecution (https://tinyurl.com/ybdvqotd).

Travel Expenses: Gina McCarthy spent $629,743 on airfare and security for international trips between 2013 and 2016. In all, Obama’s EPA administrators spent $961,856 on international travel, 7.75 times the amount spent by Scott Pruitt, without the media outcry (https://tinyurl.com/ybfc49v5).

Hiding Data: EPA concealed the results of a human experiment that directly contradicts the Obama EPA’s 2015 decision to tighten the air quality standard for ozone from 75 ppb to 70 ppb, one of the most expensive EPAs rule of all time (https://tinyurl.com/y9w5nugx).

39 more: https://tinyurl.com/yd3fkpgn

Danger, Pollution from “Clean” Energy

Destroying Water Supplies: Concrete wind turbine bases extending 30 ft below ground interfere with ground water flow, blocking or polluting supplies to homes and livestock in Scotland  (https://tinyurl.com/y7z2hs56). In Ontario, farmers are using bottled  water for livestock because of contamination with “toxic sludge” (https://tinyurl.com/yb3vmwbl).

Ticking Time Bombs: Germany’s 30,000 wind turbines, many now more than 20 years old, are failing catastrophically with increased frequency. A 100-tonne turbine plunged to earth. Razor-sharp fiberglass shards from blades of a 115-meter tall turbine flew 800 meters. They could perforate the stomach of grazing animals. Turbines are exempt from the rigorous inspections required for other industries (https://tinyurl.com/yarvyjj8).

Toxic Waste: Giant wind turbine blades cannot be recycled because they are made of composite materials that cannot be separated. Incineration is difficult, toxic, and energy intensive. By 2021 Germany may have 16,000 tonnes per year to dispose of—probably in African landfills (https://tinyurl.com/ycmqk2po).

Hansen on Renewables: “The notion that renewable energies and batteries alone will provide all needed energy is fantastical. It is also a grotesque idea, because of the staggering environmental pollution from mining and material disposal, if all energy was derived from renewables and batteries” (tinyurl.com/y9jrphqo).

Beyond Fuel

Reiterating that “exposure to air pollution is the fifth ranking human health risk factor globally,” Brian McDonald et al. examine what’s in it. As emissions from motor vehicles are reduced, volatile chemical products (VCPs) are emerging as the largest petrochemical source of urban organic emissions. VCPs include pesticides, architectural coatings, adhesives, printing ink, cleaning agents, and  personal care products. These emit secondary organic aerosols (SOAs), which are a major component of PM2.5. Concentrations indoors, where most people spend most of their time, are about 7 times higher than outdoors. “Nonfossil” contributions to SOAs, such as wood burning, cooking, and biogenic, are not considered (Science 2/16/18).

“When smog has as much deodorant as diesel in it, you know the Earth is in trouble,” writes James Conca. Personal chemical products are 20 times as effective as gasoline and diesel at producing smog, and they “mostly come from processing petroleum anyway. Unfortunately, regulations exempt many of these chemicals from environmental concern.” Conca catalogs human depredations of Earth; for example, we allegedly “extinct [sic] about,000 species every year.” (Forbes 2/20/18, https://tinyurl.com/y9xxypvh). He makes no suggestions about how to go beyond petroleum with renewables for these useful products.

Though acknowledging that indoor air pollution is “almost 10 times worse” than ambient, Conca apparently forgot this in his laudatory comments about the study of premature births referenced above. Coal tops the list on the “Deathprint for Energy,” he writes. “If coal is a significant part of a country’s energy mix, then health care costs increase about 10%.For America, that is about $400 billion a year” (Forbes 5/30/18, tinyurl.com/y9fcoheo). Was the shutdown of eight coal or oil plants in California linked to a decrease in actual medical costs in the surrounding area? Not likely. That was not included in the study.

Restoring Scientific Integrity

Civil Defense Perspectives 33(3): May 2018

On Apr 24, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Scott Pruitt signed proposed rules requiring that the scientific information relied on by the agency be publicly available in a manner sufficient for independent validation.

“The era of secret science at EPA is coming to an end,” said Pruitt. “The ability to test, authenticate, and reproduce scientific findings is vital for the integrity of rulemaking process. Americans deserve to assess the legitimacy of the science underpinning EPA decisions that may impact their lives” (TWTW 4/28/18, https://tinyurl.com/ybymshv5).

The rule “is in line with the scientific community’s moves toward increased data sharing to address the ‘replication crisis’—a growing recognition that a significant proportion of published research may not be reproducible. [It] is consistent with data access requirements for major scientific journals like Science, Nature, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences” (ibid.)

In The Irreproducibility Crisis of Modern Science, David Randall and Christopher Welser cite outright fraud, as with microplastics (see p 2) and low-dose radiation. More common is the misuse of statistics to “find” spurious correlations. There is a premium on positive results, and groupthink and absence of openness hinder efforts to check results (https://tinyurl.com/y9tcybv6).

In the Afterword, physicist William Happer lists characteristics of “pathological science”: 1. The maximum effect that is observed is produced by a causative agent of barely detectable intensity, and the magnitude of the effect is substantially independent of the intensity of the cause. 2. The effect is of a magnitude that remains close to the limit of detectability; or, many measurements are necessary because of the very low statistical significance of the results. 3. Claims of great accuracy. 4. Fantastic theories contrary to experience. 5. Criticisms are met by ad hoc excuses thought up on the spur of the moment.

EPA claims about small particulates (PM2.5) are an excellent example (CDP May 2002, Nov 2012, and July 2014, and 2017 talks by Robert Phalen, John Dale Dunn, James Enstrom, and Steve Milloy; on youtube.com, search DDPmeetings).

A “Fundamental Transformation”?

Under Obama, EPA rammed through an average 565 new rules per year, with the highest regulatory costs of any agency. It gamed cost-benefit analysis by introducing “social costs” and “social benefits.” These included speculation about how inaction would affect everything from sea levels to pediatric asthma. Before issuing the Clean Power Plan, the Obama EPA suddenly raised the global social cost of carbon emissions from $21 to $36 per ton, and in imposing new oil and gas regulations set the cost of methane at $1,100 per ton. When the Trump EPA recalculated, using only demonstrable domestic benefits, the cost estimates dropped to $5 per ton of carbon and $150 per ton of methane. This changed the claimed net benefit of the Clean Power Plan from $40 billion to a net cost of $13 billion (WSJ 6/6/18).

The new rule might also allow EPA to move away from the default use of the corrupt and scientifically flawed linear no-threshold rule (LNT) for cancer risk assessment, writes Edward Calabrese (InsideEPA 6/26/18).

Congress and Courts Seek Transparency

Another front in the war for integrity is congressional scrutiny of research funding. Four Senators—Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), Rand Paul (R-Ky.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), and Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.)—are demanding an investigation of $4 million National Science Foundation grant to Climate Central to “educate” 500 TV weathercasters to report on “climate change.” The senators say the program “is not science—it is propagandizing.” The NSF is supposed to fund basic research, not political or social advocacy (https://tinyurl.com/y8rzzn9c).

An Arizona appellate court has finally ordered the University of Arizona to hand over public records that would expose the genesis of what some consider the most influential scientific publication of the 1990s, the Mann-Bradley-Hughes temperature reconstruction that looks like a hockey stick—1,763 days, three trips to appellate court, and two bankers’ boxes full of legal briefs after a case was filed by the Free Market Environmental Law Clinic (https://tinyurl.com/y9ecyz2r).

The Establishment Strikes Back

The proposed rule came under immediate attack from Democrats, radical environmentalists, the American Lung Association, Science, Nature, and many others. One claim was breach of patient confidentiality, despite safeguards in the rule. The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) pointed out the irony, given the government’s demand for ever more patient data: the government’s view on transparency depends on whether it’s their data or your data (https://tinyurl.com/y73x8reo).

“Like tobacco lobbyists and climate-change deniers, the [EPA] is co-opting scientific trappings to sow doubt,” writes science historian Naomi Oreskes (https://tinyurl.com/y7rl2vvc).

In the JAMA Forum, authors from Harvard claim that “the Trump Environmental Agenda May Lead to 80000 Extra Deaths per Decade,” most importantly from rolling back Clean Power Plan rules for PM2.5 (JAMA 6/12/18).

The Center for American Progress, a “progressive” advocacy group founded by John Podesta, asserts that “Pruitt’s actions on energy and the environment threaten to harm women’s health and reproductive justice.” Exposure to PM2.5 can allegedly affect fertility-related hormones and lead to low birth weight and pre-term deliveries (https://tinyurl.com/yd9fxoe8).

The Cost in Human Lives

The first example of EPA’s deliberately ignoring scientific evidence was its ban on DDT in 1972. This ban has led to about 50 million deaths from malaria worldwide; about 500 million cases are reported annually. Governmental and UN bureaucracies and immensely wealthy foundations threaten to cut off aid to poor Africans if they use DDT. Yet not one peer-reviewed, independently replicated study has linked DDT exposure to any adverse outcome in humans (tinyurl.com/acc5md3).

Incalculable are the benefits that could accrue from productive use of the $1.5 trillion that former EPA insider Alan Carlin estimates the world wastes every year because of climate alarmism based on faulty evidence (https://tinyurl.com/y7ouybpy).

Micromanaging Food

In order to reduce the environmental impact of food, policymakers would need to deal with 570 million farms in widely diverse climate and soil conditions that use vastly different methods. A recent study consolidated data on greenhouse gas emissions, land use, terrestrial acidification, eutrophication, and scarcity-weighted fresh water withdrawals related to 40 major foods, from 38,700 farms and 1,600 processors. Monitoring multiple impacts and trade-offs from changing practices would require data from producers as well as from satellites. Planners want to “communicate impacts up the supply chain.” For example, returnable stainless steel kegs create just 20 g of CO2 eq per liter of beer, vs. 300-750 g for recycled glass bottles vs. 450-2,500 for bottles sent to landfills. Both producers and consumers need to be “incentivized” to reduce the impact of food production and distribution. “Moving from current diets to a diet that excludes animal products…has transformative potential” (Science 6/1/18).

War on Air Pollution

The UK’s ambition to reach the WHO standard for fine particulates (PM2.5, less than 2.5 µm diameter) of an average < 10 µg/m3 (the U.S. standard is 12 µg/m3) would require heavy regulation of a “huge, wide range of sectors and industries.” A key component is emissions of ammonia, which fuels atmospheric chemical reactions that produce problematic particulates. Farm use of fertilizers and manure from livestock and chickens produce 88% of the UK’s ammonia emissions. The government also proposes tackling domestic wood stoves and fireplaces and vehicle tires and brakes. The 104-page Clean Air Strategy also envisions phasing out diesel-fueled trains by 2040 (Science 6/1/18).

Exxon’s “Secret Science”

The cities of Oakland and San Francisco sued Exxon for damages that allegedly will result from climate change, accusing them of concealing evidence of harm from use of its products. The secret was that Exxon quoted, and by implication accepted, a summary of the Second IPCC Assessment Report (1995), which included Benjamin Santer’s mysterious distinct “human fingerprint,” the hot spot in the tropical troposphere at about 33,000 ft (TWTW 4/7/18). This was important for signing the Kyoto Protocol, and is one of the three lines of evidence the EPA relies on to regulate CO2  emissions. The hot spot, however, cannot be found, in analyzing five different datasets dating from 1959 to 2015, once the changing El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) patterns are removed (TWTW, sepp.org 9/24/16).

The lateFrederick Seitz called the process involved in inserting the term “distinct human fingerprint” the worse abuse of the peer review process he had seen in 60 years of American science.

Save the Oceans from Plastic

The theme of 2018’s Earth Day was the contamination of the oceans with plastic. Fears of a previously unrecognized environmental catastrophe—the endangerment of fish by microplastic particles in the ocean—erupted after the 2016 publication of an article by Oona Lönnstedt and Peter Eklöv at Uppsala University in Science. The U.S. had already banned plastic microbeads in personal care products. After early dismissal of their concerns, whistleblowers persisted, and the data were found to be completely fabricated (Randall and Welser, op. cit.).

Nonetheless, the war on plastics continues. “Beat Plastic Pollution” was the theme of the UN’s June 5 World Environment Day. The Plastic Pollution Coalition, claiming membership of 500 groups, calls plastic “a substance the earth cannot digest.” It is “overwhelming our planet.” The war on plastics is part of the war on hydrocarbon fuels: “Plastic pollution and climate change are parallel global emergencies” (tinyurl.com/p5cffan).

Some want all plastics eliminated—though vital for health and civilization, as they are in heart valves, smart phones, and  protective helmets, as well as food packaging. Some would allow those manufactured from biofuels. This would require turning nearly the whole planet into a biofuel farm.

Plastic is “litter, not pollution,” states Canadian ecologist and Greenpeace cofounder Patrick Moore. It is not toxic and passes right through the digestive tract if eaten (tinyurl.com/y8jjner5). The best way to dispose of it is by incineration, with proper emissions control. Most plastic in the ocean comes from rivers in Asia—and millions of tons of that comes from waste shipped from the EU for “recycling” (https://tinyurl.com/y8284py3).

Torturing the Data

Potential birth defects are a horror that is especially likely to arouse public concern. Vast data-dredging studies have been carried out to try to demonstrate a connection between PM2.5exposure and congenital anomalies such as cleft palate or heart defects—most showing minor associations or no effect. A study by Ren et al. in the Journal of Pediatrics (2018;193:76-84) also looked at preconception exposure. The study included 548,863 live births in Ohio from 2006-2010. Exposure was estimated from monthly averages measured at 57 EPA PM2.5 monitors, using the one closest to the maternal residence, for five periods, the month of conception and 1 and 2 months prior or after. Mean PM2.5  level was compared for births with and without anomalies. The maximum mean difference in PM2.5  levels for the three “most susceptible” time periods was a minuscule 0.32 µg/m3.  [The limits for detection and error of measurement are not given.] The maximum adjusted odds ratio (of the 3 of 18 that were outside the 95% confidence interval) was 1.2. The potential mechanism for a teratogenic effect of PM2.5 of unknown composition deep in the mother’s lungs on a not-yet-conceived embryo was admittedly “speculative” and included oxidative stress and placental inflammation. See criteria for “pathological science” on p 1.

Corrupted Evidence in Medicine

Publication Bias: Of completed drug trials, well under half are published. Most published ones favor the drug.

Rigged Outcomes: Before 2000, researchers did not have to register the primary outcome to be measured. Many were measured and the most favorable ones reported. Before 2000, 57% of trials found a positive result. After 2000, only 8% did.

Paid-off Journal Editors: About half of journal editors receive payment of some type from drug or device companies. The most egregious may be theJournal of the American College of Cardiology. In 2014, each editor received, on average, $475,072 personally and another $119,407 for “research.” With 35 editors, that’s about $15 million in bribes (https://tinyurl.com/ybculpks).

21st Annual Meeting Reports – Doctors for Disaster Preparedness, 01/07/2003 – http://www.ddponline.org/ddpnews/ddpjul03.htm

“The Petr Beckmann Award for ‘courage and achievement in the defense of scientific truth and freedom’ was presented to Dr. Sherwood Idso for his work demonstrating the fertilizing effect of increased carbon dioxide on the biosphere. He now publishes a remarkable on-line science journal at http://www.co2science.org.”

Leo Hickman (2010) – Climate sceptics and fringe political groups are an unhealthy cocktail – The Guardian, 04/06/2010 – http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/blog/2010/jun/04/climate-sceptics-fringe-political-groups

“The DDP website lists its president as Jane Orient, MD. Orient, whose private practice specialises in «internal medicine», has also at times variously been the executive director and president of a group sharing the very same address in Tucson, Arizona, called the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS). Further proof that these two groups are closely connected is provided on the DDP’s Facebook page which lists an administrator called Adrienne Snavely who also describes herself as «office staff» at the AAPS. (She also lists herself as an employed storm spotter for the National Weather Service. Nice work, if you can get it.)

2010 Petr Beckmann Award Given to Marc Morano – Doctors for Disaster Preparedness, 08/07/2010 – http://www.ddponline.org/home/2010/7/8/2010-petr-beckmann-award-given-to-marc-morano.html

“The Petr Beckmann award is given by DDP to individuals who demonstrate courage and achievement in defense of scientific truth and freedom. Marc Morano of http://www.climatedepot.com received the award in June of 2010.”

Joseph Romm – UK Guardian slams Morano for cyber-bullying and for urging violence against climate scientists – Climate Progress, 15/07/2010 – http://climateprogress.org/2010/07/15/uk-guardian-slams-morano-for-cyber-bullying-and-for-urging-violence-against-climate-scientists/

“But it might be worth bearing in mind that Morano has said some rather choice things himself about climate scientists in the past: «I seriously believe we should kick them while they’re down. They deserve to be publicly flogged.» If this is what Doctors for Disaster Preparedness means by “demonstrating courage and achievement in defence of scientific truth and freedom” then it has a rather different interpretation of the words “courage” and “defence” than I do.”

«Here’s how Jane Orient, DDP’s president, introduced Morano to the stage to receive his award: «It’s given to those who speak out courageously, even though it might be politically incorrect, to support the truth that is essential for our progress in science. Our recipient this year has been particularly effective in winning victories in this field. And he also uses with great effectiveness one of Petr Beckmann’s best weapons – humour.» I’m sure Professor Schneider, and all the other climate scientists who have been receiving death threats and hate mail in recent months, must be tickled sick with humour by the vicious irony of this award.”

Wiki – Doctors for Disaster Preparedness – Sourcewatch, 04/06/2011 – http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php/Doctors_for_Disaster_Preparedness

“In “Rand Paul Is Linked to Doctors’ Group That Supports Vaccination Challenges,” the New York Times documented his long involvement (1990-2010) with the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS), but only scratched the surface of the strangeness. AAPS Executive Director Jane Orient and her associates run a tightly-coupled group of 501(c)(3) public charities. They seem to reject much modern science and focus efforts to promote political views, perhaps beyond the 501(c) rules. Enough has been learned since this earlier post to motivate this update and some following posts, especially given the recent prominence of DDP’s favorite outside speaker, Willie Soon. [Willie Soon’s fossil fuel funding, and failures to disclose, are hot in the news right now, see New York Times, The Guardian, Inside Climate News, and DeSmogBlog.] Of course, organization membership does not imply acceptance of all positions, but Rand Paul’s long-time association raises questions. Which of their views on science does he accept? Which of their policies does he support? Rand Paul is still featured at AAPS About Us, often using “we” regarding its actions.”

“Jane Orient (or this or this) is the contact for at least 6 nonprofits some dormant, most tax-exempt 501(c)(3). She signed the Scientific Dissent From Darwinism. She met with Philip Morris and was often mentioned and seemed aligned with Big Tobacco against attempts to reduce teen smoking. Update 12/01/16 A year ago, Zachary Mider wrote What Kind of Man Spends Millions to Elect Ted Cruz? about Robert Mercer, who then strongly backed Donald Trump’s campaign, but has funded several of the organizations here and attended meeting(s). It included a graph like that below, but with Mercer at center.”

“Andrew Schlafly (Wikipedia, RationalWiki) has long been AAPS General Counsel, so is presumably known to Rand Paul. He has spoken often for DDP, on such topics as global warming in courts, the litigation epidemic, that litigation and junk science helped bring down the World Trade Center, and that great thinkers are almost entirely created via home schooling. Regardless of the merits, the relevance of some seems unclear to the stated purposes of DDP. His behavior in the “Lenski Affair” seems similar to those who demand data while lacking the expertise or intent to do something useful with it.

Physicians for Civil Defense, IRS, still has active website, currently featuring “The Good News About Nuclear Destruction.” At least once DDP sent money there, easy since they are located in the same office. American Health Legal Foundation (AHLF), IRS, has $500K in assets and 2 officers/directors shared with AAPS, plus Orient. Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS, 501(c)(6)), IRS, has $800K assets, paid Jane Orient $182,600 in 2012 (Form 990), has a few thousand members, website, and entries in Wikipedia, SourceWatch and RationalWiki, which has a good list of AAPS positions. AAPS publishes the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons (JPandS), not an indexed, peer-reviewed journal, discussed in 2007, or in 2009. JPandS published “Environmental Effects of Increased Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide” in 2007 by Art Robinson, Noah Robinson, and Willie Soon. It has often published Robinsons, as well as other climate-relevant pieces. Besides Jane Orient, it has shared seveal offices/directors with DDP, as enumerated in attached spreadsheet. Doctors for Disaster Preparedness INC (DDP), IRS, has a website, a SourceWatch entry, has about $90K in assets and seems a joint effort between Jane Orient and Art Robinson. Howard Hayden is a director (SourceWatch entry.) Robert J. Cihak is a Director for both DDP and AAPS, SourceWatch, writes for NewsMax and is a Board Member and Senior Fellow of the Discovery Institute. DDP runs annual conferences, as described in Fakery 2 pp.178-179, advertised by OISM, or in the 2014 meeting, many of whose speakers would be familiar to DeSmogBlog readers, often via involvement with the Heartland Institute. Disaster-preparedness seems a worthy topic, but it is unclear why anti-renewable-energy and climate anti-science fill half the slots in recent years.” Weird Anti-Science PDF p.4 gives another related social network graph, and p.19 describes an annual award by DDP to honor Petr Beckman (SourceWatch), who devoted his later life to proving Einstein’s relativity wrong. Honorees have included Jane Orient, Robert Jastrow, Sallie Balliunas, Art Robinson, Fred Singer. Sherwood Idso, Willie Soon, and Marc Morano. The Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine (OISM), IRS, has about $5M in assets, a website (currently asking for urine samples), a SourceWatch entry. Two of its “faculty” are deceased. The Board consists of Art Robinson, his sons Noah and Zachary, Jane Orient, and one more person. OISM is famed for the Oregon Petition, an activity that seems far outside its 501(c)(3) charter and whose funding is still unknown, but might well be connected with the George Marshall Institute. Art Robinson (Wikipedia, RationalWiki, SourceWatch) has run for US Representative several times, endorsed by Rand Paul’s father Ron Paul. Rachel Maddow’s 2010 interview may offer some insight into his views. She followed with a 5-minute version in 2014 covering his 3rd run, and requests for urine samples from Oregonians. George Gilder (Wikipedia, SourceWatch) cofounded the Discovery Instute (Wikipedia, RationalWiki), which hosts the video “The Global Warming Myth – Dr Noah Robinson – Telecosm 2007.” In the first few minutes, Gilder explained that “Arthur Robinson was the man who first alerted me to the possible flaws in the case for human-caused global warming” and then introduced chemist/veternarian Noah to speak. In Fantasy Fears, Steve Forbes relied on George’s med student daughter Mary Ellen Tiffany Gilder, with a paper at OISM.

John Mashey – Was Willie Soon Paid For Science…Or Anti-Science? – Desmogblog, 27/02/2015 – http://www.desmogblog.com/2015/02/27/was-willie-soon-paid-science-or-anti-science

“Doctors for Disaster Preparedness’s tax-free, Primary Exempt Purpose is “To distribute scientific and defense related information on public health, safety and security issues.” However, DDP’s main activity seems to be an annual meeting that offers an odd collection of talks. Some indeed cover disaster preparedness, some seem interesting, but not obviously relevant. Even odder, it does not seem relevant in this forum to attack climate and environmental sciences and renewable energy, as have about half the talks in recent years. It is unclear why even legitimate policy arguments about these would fit DDP’s charitable purpose. In the attached spreadsheet, Chron lists talks chronologically and Speakers is sorted by name, putting Willie Soon near the end. Most agendas 1999-2014 are complete, offering hours of videos for dedicated viewers. Year 2013, #31 is a good example of a complete meeting. Soon was their favorite outside speaker, every year 2000-2014. His sessions often follow this pattern: Art Robinson introduces Soon with great praise, as in #25 and #26. Soon says how honored he is to speak to such a distinguished audience and sometimes says he is no expert at the topic, akin to Fred Singer’s “How would I know?” He then speaks for most or all of the alloted time, using a style that might be called Gish Gallop with Graphs Galore, interspersed with jokes about scientists and Al Gore.”

Jane M. Orient – Is Hillary Clinton Medically Unfit to Serve? – Junkscience, 10/08/2016 – http://junkscience.com/2016/08/is-hillary-clinton-medically-unfit-to-serve/

“While we don’t have Mrs. Clinton’s medical records, it is widely stated that she experienced a fall that caused a concussion. Since then, she is sometimes seen wearing eyeglasses with prisms, as are used to correct double vision. Concussions often cause traumatic brain injury, which might not be visualized on standard CT or MRI. Many of our veterans who experienced blast injury from improvised explosive devices suffer from it. These are some symptoms: difficulty thinking, attention deficits, confusion, memory problems, frustration, mood swings, emotional outbursts, agitation, headaches, difficulties with balance and coordination, and seizures. Many veterans with such an injury cannot hold a job or interact normally with their families. Obviously, it would be very dangerous for a person subject to symptoms like this to be dealing with foreign leaders or making critical decisions.”

“His 5G video was from a talk he presented at a pseudo-scientific conference featuring a who’s who of science deniers. One of the headliners was Andrew Wakefield, a debarred former physician and seminal figure in the anti-vaccination movement who promotes highly damaging misinformation about vaccination based on data that he is known to have falsified. Another attendee of this meeting was the president of Doctors for Disaster Preparedness, an organisation famous for bestowing awards onto fossil-fuel funded climate deniers and for giving a platform to a speaker who denied the link between HIV and AIDS, claiming that the link was invented by government scientists who wanted to cover up other health risks of “the lifestyle of homosexual men.” ”

Doctors for Disaster Preparedness – Sourcewatch. 04/06/2020 – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctors_for_Disaster_Preparedness

“The group is closely affiliated with the American Association of Physicians and Surgeons, a politically conservative nonprofit association advocating numerous discredited hypotheses including AIDS denialism.[2] It is run by Arizona physician Jane Orient.[3] According to Bloomberg News, the group was «founded to promote civil defense during the Cold War», and has been «transformed over the years into a forum» on «fringe-science topics» such as global warming denial. DDP was described by The Guardian as a «fringe political group» and as a «truly bizarre lobby group».[2] It promotes the denialist view that man-made global warming is not real or not an important concern … Doctors for Disaster Preparedness share the same address with AAPS. DDP President Jane Orient is also the Executive Director of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS). DDP Vice-President Arthur B. Robinson is also the President of the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine (OISM) … Computer scientist and hedge fund manager Robert Mercer has been a donor to DDP.”

“The Petr Beckmann Award for courage and achievement in defense of scientific truth and freedom’ is awarded at the annual meeting of the Doctors for Disaster Preparedness. The award is named for Petr Beckmann, an electrical engineer and libertarian who challenged Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity. The Guardian described the Beckmann Award as «handed out by obscure rightwing lobbyists». The following people have received this award: 1995 – Jane Orient[9] 1996 – Robert Jastrow[10] 1997 – Sallie Baliunas[11] 1998 – Arthur B. Robinson[12] 2000 – S. Fred Singer[13] 2003 – Sherwood B. Idso[14] 2004 – Willie Soon[15] 2012 – Marc Morano.”

Doctors for Disaster Preparedness – Sourcewatch, 04/06/2020 – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctors_for_Disaster_Preparedness

“Doctors for Disaster Preparedness President Jane Orient has asserted that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports are unreliable and that relevant data was «hidden, locked in the clutches of the elite few» because the data would «decisively disproves their computer models and shows that their draconian emission controls are based on nothing except a lust for power, control and profit.» After the nuclear accident at Fukushima, Orient argued in the John Birch Society publication The New American that concerns about the disaster were exaggerated and the accident should not deter the United State from using nuclear power. After a reported increase in fallout-shelter construction since the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, she was quoted as saying, «They’re treating me less like a crazy woman than they did before.».”
