electromagnetism

ALTERNATIVE NAMES:
DETAILS/DESCRIPTION:
Electromagnetism is the physics of the electromagnetic field. The magnetic field (which causes the effects usually associated with magnets) is produced by the movement of an electric current. Also a changing magnetic field a changing electric field.
The fact that the two phenomena interacted in this was first noticed by sailors when they saw that lightning caused compass needles to swing.
Electromagnetism was formally announced by the Dane Oersted* in 1820 (after his experiments with electrified wire and a compass needle) and later on was described in the theory of electromagnetism set out by the French scientist AM Ampere*.
ONELINER: Electromagnetism is an interaction that occurs between particles with electric charge via electromagnetic fields.
