Writing and Editing Notes
These topics cover the everyday work of writing in a note: formatting text, typing Markdown shortcuts, building outlines, editing the note as plain text, finding and replacing, checking spelling, inserting dates, and moving around long notes. The settings for notes are here too.
- Writing and Formatting Notes — Every thought has a rich-text note; format it with bold, italics, headings, lists, code, colors, and alignment, and it saves automatically.
- Markdown in Notes — Type Markdown and it formats as you go — headings, lists, checkboxes, quotes, and more — plus TheBrain's own extensions, a dialect now deprecated in favor of standard Markdown.
- Outline Lists — Indent, Outdent, and Move — In Outliner mode (the default) bulleted and numbered lists behave as outlines —
TabandShift+Tabchange an item's level, andAltwith the arrow keys moves or duplicates it together with its sub-items; Separate lines mode edits each line on its own. - The Text Editor (Text and Split Views) — The note's Text and Split views are a full plain-text Markdown editor — smart indentation, list continuation, bracket pairing, line moves, go to line, whitespace markers, indent guides, and per-user editor options — that saves on Save, on switching views, or on leaving the note, not on a timer.
- Find and Replace in Notes — Search within the current note and optionally replace matches, with options for case, whole word, and regular expressions.
- Spellcheck — Spellcheck underlines misspelled words in notes; Automatic checks in TheBrain's interface language (not the language you write in), you can tick other languages, and right-clicking a flagged word offers suggestions, Ignore, and Add to Dictionary.
- Dates and Times in Notes — Insert the current date into a note with one shortcut, and set a custom date/time format to control how it's written.
- Table of Contents — Find your way around a long note from its headings: Go to Heading at the cursor (
Ctrl+T, or⌘Ton Mac), the Headings Sidebar beside the note, or a table of contents inserted into the note. - Notes Settings — Configure the notes editor — toolbar placement, spellcheck, the bottom status bar and its counters, current-line highlight, date format, the list editing mode and outline controls, clipboard behavior, and the plain-text editor's options.
